Not much help here
This anthology is mostly full of average and uninteresting essays. I doubt it will inspire people to write. I found that it actually depressed me. It definitely is not the 'world's best writing advice' as the title states. For a more motivating and knowledgeable book I recommend The Creative Writing Coursebook, edited by Paul Magrs and Julia Bell.

people love to or long to write
I have a friend who hates these "Writers on Writing" books, but I actually enjoy them and this one is probably my favorite. More than the inclusion of some of my favorites like Gloria Naylor, what I enjoy most about The Home Companion is the division into sections such as "Revision" and "Practice". I keep it right above my computer for quick reference if I ever feel stuck or uninspired.

OK, "World's Best" might be pushing it, but this is a compendium of some durn good advice.
