This book is second in a series following the fictional Steed Family and their involvement in the formation of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. The book is based in large part on actual events as recorded in church historical documents or personal journal entries from people of the time. Though I did like this book, I didn't enjoy it as much as the first one. This one was much darker and a bit disturbing at times. It was, however, very accurate to what was happening to the Chur...more

This entire series is wonderful. It takes a fictional family and places them in the middle of the story of the Mormons (the church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints) and moves them through the early history of the LDS Church tell the story of the growth of the church as well as the growth of the Steed Family. I learned a lot and it put a lot of things into context for me as well. For example after reading several books one of the members of the Steed Family who was Wealthy bought a new and wo...more

As with the previous novel in the series, I am reading this book on tape. Unlike the previous novel, however, I am scheduled to make a 4 hour drive, which should put a significant dent in my reading! I had to start the actual book tonight, and of course had a difficult time putting it down; the first tape was missing, so I read until where the second tape began and then stopped at the end of the section. Which, I discovered, I did not like.

On a side note, if anyone is looking to get me a Chr...more

Based on the story of the Steed family in the 1800s, The Work & The Glory series is a well written fictional account of the early days of the Mormon religion. Intertwined in the fictional lives of the Steeds are actually church events and historical figures. Again, like the Left Behind book series it is important for readers to remember and understand that these novels are for entertainment and are FICTIONAL.

I really want to learn more about church history which is why I've been listening to these books. I really enjoy the history, but I can't stand the guy who reads the books which is part of what ruins them for me. But I also don't like how tears keep "welling up" in everyones eyes every other paragraph and the characters all seem like they have pretty much the same personality.

Some people might get angry that I only gave these volumes three stars, but the fictional family Lund added to these historical novel seemed a little too sappy for me. However, the historical part was fantastic, especially his writing of Haun's Mill. That was absolutely haunting. I just felt the fictional family was a little too melodramatic for my taste.

I read the series while I worked during the summer break of college. It was really a good time for me to read these because I worked at hotels at night and I needed a comforting book to read. Although there was a lot of conflict in these books, I loved the story of the families and their love and the overal theme. I loved these books!

Iloved this book. It would keep me up almost every night until I finished it. I am already working on volume 3. I think I enjoy it so much because I am learning so much of church history and it has a love story behind it all. Anyhow, I love it. It is great.

I first started reading the first chapters several monthes ago. I got bored of it and put it down. I picked it back up again on Saturday and finished it. I do enjoy the Steed family. Sometimes historical charaters will just pop up in the book.

I love the whole Work and the Glory series. I read all nine in the span of about 2.5 months. They are just amazing! And the fact that you get to be there in history is astounding. I think I'm going to read them all over again soon.

This just gets better and better. Really helps a person to better understand the LDS Church and it's people that founded it. Also helps if one is reading the Doctrine and Covenants, it give a great amount of texture to the scripture.

It took me a couple of years after I read the first one to read the second one. I find myself not wanting to read the next one, because I want their lives to be the way I want them to be, not necessarily the way he writes it.

I haven't read this one in a while, but I think it was my least favorite of the series. Just so you know, the movies do not even compare with the books! I think these are my favorite books of all time!

This is a good follow up to a good book! In this book the steeds face more trials but they endure them well and we also see the church and what problems they face.

The series continued strong with this book. The Ohio years with the problems and continued trials really came to life. This was so much better than the movie.

Same goes for the second and the third. I'm sure I'd still enjoy them now but I barely remember the stories that go along with these books.
