Interesting collection of stories. Some are better than the others. Not the usual garden-variety whodunit plots...although I am a sucker for those!!!

Most of the stories are psychological thrillers and/or deal with the supernatural, one way or the other. I suppose after watching TV shows like the X-Files and Supernatural, the stories were pretty tame. However, for the time when they were written, I thought the plots were quite impressive in how dark they were.

One thing though that is starting to

Some of the stories were very atmospheric and intriguing, but there were some I just couldn't care about that ended flatly, without allowing the reader to get invested. Still, there were some gems here that I loved, such as The Call of Wings and The Witness for the Prosecution. It was nice to read something of Christie that was so different from her usual detective novels and I daresay she could have written a great gothic novel. (Has she ever?)

The Hound of Death: 1/5
The Red Signal: 2/5

After having dealt with the classic doggie of Baskervilles, I figured out I might continue with the theme for a bit longer. I also thought it would be nice to read a real book for a change - instead of an ebook, that is.

The Hound of Death is a collection of 12 short stories that despite their differing themes and genres (!) form a nice, clean ensemble. The stories consist of "classic" ghost stories, ghost stories or mysteries with a touch of Scooby Doo (you know, in which there is a criminal of

I thoroughly enjoyed several of these stories, particularly The Red Signal and Witness for the Prosecution. Both of them were more of the typical Christie murder mystery with a twist than many of the other stories in the collection.
I liked the paranormal twist to the stories though personally I preferred the ones where it was rationally explained at the conclusion. Mysteries that aren’t really solved but are left to the unexplained aren’t a favorite of mine.

I had a great time with this book. Not only are the stories easy to read, they also have this atmosphere of mystery and fright that is not easy to create. This isn't what one would generally expect when picking up an Agatha Christie book, no doubt. There isn't a perfectly reasonable explanation to everything as it usually is, but it leaves just enough room to imaginative people such as myself, and explains everything that absolutely needs to be explained.

The Hound of Death would seem to be the literary intersection of Agatha Christie's interest in the paranormal, and her interest in exploring the form of the short story. Published in 1933, the book is comprised of twelve tales, eleven of which deal directly with supernatural themes.

I would argue, however, that many of the stories also deal with abnormal psychology, including "Witness for the Prosecution", the most well-known tale in the collection, and arguably Christie's most famous short stor

The first Agatha Christie book I read as an adult was chosen randomly at a bookshop. It turned out to be a collection of short stories: mysteries dealing with the supernatural and, more often, with con artists and criminals. The stories were very easy to read and had some interesting plots that made you keep going, but my main impression is that Christie’s work has not aged well. And I don’t mean obvious things (such as a character’s fear of cutting-edge technology such as a lift and a radio). ...more

Really don't like the "Christie does spooky/creepy/paranormal" stories, and don't like many of her short stories, so this one had several strikes against it from the get-go. A couple at least had earth-bound malfeasants that were just using spooky things to try to hide their crimes, those are forgivable. The ones that don't have no closure, and make no sense upon completion. The Last Seance is one that has stuck with me in a horrifyingly creepy way since I first read it decades ago, did not ...more

Another short story collection, this time with a slant towards the supernatural and horror. I have to say that although I read this book fairly easily, I didn't especially enjoy any of the stories. In most cases the endings feel rushed and incomplete and I wasn't sure whether this was because of the short story format or whether Christie was trying to inject some suspense into the endings. I don't know whether it's just that this type of novel isn't my typical genre of reading but I just didn't ...more

This is a collection of few paranormal short stories. I like Agatha Christie's stories and novels for their logical reasoning and for innovative and extra ordinary ideas provided they could be explained with psychology or logic. When I found that stories of this book are more inclined to paranormal reasoning I instantly lost all my interests. So read first few of them but not all over a time period of one year or more !!!. So giving up the rest of the stories of this book for now.

Kanatların Çağrısı - Agathe Christie

Korku gerilimin ustası olan Agathe Christie ilk kez okudum. Çok heyecanlıydım. Pek haz almayıp anlamsız bulduğum korku türünün ilk denemem bir profesyonelden olacaktı. Büyük bir hayal kırıklığı yaşadım. 11 hikayeden oluşan bu kitap kesinlikle sürekleyici değildi. Hikayelerinde insanı cezbeden kurgu, yada bir kaç unsur yoktu. Sadece 4,5 hikaye okunmaya değerdi. İlk defa sayfa atlayıp okumak zorunda kaldım. Bazı yerler dayanılacak gibi değildi. Övgüyle bahsedile

Dark, haunting and chilling; I honestly couldn't get it out of my head after I finished it. Some of the stories were extremely creepy and is guaranteed to give you the shivers. Others are rather confusing, and the spiritual element makes you wonder whether it is all in the mind of the narrator, or whether it's a truly inexplicable event.

Not the usual stuff I read Christie for. I said the same thing about Mr Quin, except the stories in this collection are better. And it contains one of her absolute best ... Witness for the Prosecution.

The Hound of Death is the first set of short stories to feature in The Agatha Christie Collection. I’m not generally a fan of short stories, although Christie offers up some rather good ideas in this supernatural portfolio. Although some of the themes begin to get repetitive, there is enough to distinguish them from one another. Christie successfully resolves some of the stories with “natural” solutions, while others are more open-ended and suggestive, meaning the reader can play along without ...more
