Ravenous is the epitome of a middle-of-the-road book. It’s an entertaining read, but not one I’d jump to recommend.
Classified as paranormal romance, Ravenous follows the structure of that genre, but also includes plenty of urban fantasy elements and will probably appeal to readers on that side of the subgenre divide. The central characters, Holly (a witch) and Alessandro (a vampire), fall in love while trying to prevent a demon from wreaking havoc in their city. Sharon Ashwood tells the story in...more

**3.5ish**
Though it's classified as PNR, Ravenous reads like thrilling UF. It has moments of wit and terror, enhanced by the growing connection between witchy heroine, Holly Carver, and her vampire partner, Alessandro Caravelli.
Ashwood's characters are realistic, as is the dialogue. The relationships flow easily, punctuated by moments of wry humor. Holly, Alessandro, Mac, and others are flawed yet likable, doing the best they can in a dark situation.

I picked up Ravenous by Sharon Ashwood because I liked the sound of the blurb. I tried to ignore the front cover. (Seriously? Who wears clothes like that, while delicately fingering the hilt of a blade?) The idea of a ghost-busting witch seemed interesting and entertaining, and by midway through the first chapter, I was hooked. My thoughts went something like this:
Chapter 1: This is great. Holly is a really interesting character, strong but not aggressive, and it’s such a novelty to see a vampir...more

I had gone to a used bookstore looking for something to read. And I found Ravenous and 2 more books in the series, so I thought I would give them a try. I wasn't sure if I would like the story and I did have a little trouble getting started with it but after I had read a little bit of the story I definitely have to say that I enjoyed this book.
To me it is a mix between UF and PNR.

Quick & Dirty: Magic on every page.
Opening Sentence: “Why didn’t you say you were calling about the old Flanders place?”
The Review:
Ok, so I went back in time and picked up the first in this series, after already reviewing the fourth. Screwy, I know, but I was on a deadline. So, in this first installment we are introduced to what seems to be most of the major players in the rest of the series. It’s nice to get to know them a bit more. And we are also introd...more

I usually don’t read a lot of urban fantasy. I like my HEA and a nice wrap-up at the end of my stories. But, as they say, a good book is a good book, and I’m now hooked on this Dark Forgotten series after reading Ravenous. I’m obviously a little behind in starting it all, with Scorched now on the shelves as of a few months ago. I at least have something to look forward to sooner instead of later.

I'm not sure WHY I finished this one. I really struggled to; yet I never gave up. I think Ashwood has something here; despite a lot of flaws I was still interested in the world she had created. A lot of it was very frustrating: could not figure out why the hero was interested in the heroine, the plot was a bit boring at times and the heroine as witch was somewhat underdeveloped (how did she do magic again? What were the rules of magic in her world? that was never satisfactorily explained.)

This book made my week (my whole month really). It is a joy to find a new (to me), top-notch paranormal romance. Even more awesome to find out there's more to read in the series!
The set up seems similar - at first. Holly Carver lives in an alternate world. Magic has moved into the light. Vampires are known to be real. And then things start to get a little bit different, in a most refreshing way.

I think fans of either genre will enjoy this book. I'm on the fence with my overall opinion of this book. It started out fun and interesting. Holly is cleaning the bad spirit out of an old house to pay for college. It turns out the house is a bit more malevolent than she expected and our story goes from there. The mystery is decent. I wanted to know who was summoning demons, how and why they stole a book from the vampire queen, and what was killing college students. I was also interested in our...more
Holly Carver is a witch living in the little town of Fairview. She comes from a long line of powerful witches, but damaged her own powers badly during a spell when she was little, and therefore uses what little witchcraft she has left to banish ghosts from old buildings in return for tuition money. She is helped in her ghost busting business by Alessandro Caravelli, a six centuries old vampire who clearly wants to be more than just a friend to her, but knows that if he ever bites her, his addict...more
To be very fair at the start of this review I am naturally predisposed towards any book that has these 3 things: chick with sharp pointy object on cover, character who owns/wants an Aston Martin Vanquish (my dream car) and a heroine who has to battle the minions of darkness--both those of the academic kind and supernatural sort. Ravenous goes one step beyond by making me really enjoy reading about the characters.

Yay!! Another winner in the unknown author (to me, anyway) lottery. I picked up "Ravenous: The Dark Forgotten" on a whim and I'm sure glad I did. Sharon Ashwood managed to pique my interest with her tale of a modern day witch with dating 'issues'.

I'm going to be generous and give this 2.5 stars.
I really wanted to like this book. In spite of the fact that it is a classic urban fantasy with classic urban fantasy tropes, there were a few elements to this book that I thought were imaginative and interesting. For one thing, I love the idea that witches in this UF universe have semi-sentient houses, and that haunted houses are really just sentient houses gone bad. That was cool. But that was one of the few innovative ideas in this novel.

I have no idea where to begin with this particular novel.
Sharon Ashwood is a new author to me, I scanned the back cover of Ravenous and found the blurb to be interesting enough to buy. I've been wanting something fresh and new to read for a while and the idea Sharon Ashwood had was so original I couldn't resist.

I liked Holly’s character. She seemed like any average girl trying to juggle a romantic life, a house, a job and going back to school. She wants to help everyone, even if it puts herself at risk. Her relationship with Alessandro is interesting, but a bit predictable. And of course I want to know where I can buy a self-maintenance house, like hers!!

I wanted to like this book. I really did. I thought it could have had potential, because the ideas behind the world-building weren’t bad. However, the author’s execution of the story fell flat on its figurative ass.
The following review may contain some mild spoilers, so please proceed with caution.

While Ashwood's story encompasses any number of cliches and the end of the journey is -- ultimately -- rather obvious, I can say without a doubt that this book is a prime example of the journey and where it takes you carrying more weight than the destination itself. She weaves her world-building effortlessly, the character development and interactions come across to the reader as naturally as if I was sitting in the local Starbucks, people-watching.

I don't normally like or read stories with vampires but I do read books with witches. This one has both and it's good. Probably because together they kick demon butt!
Holly Carver is a witch who busts ghosts and hauntings for tuition money. Her business partner is Alessandro, a 600 year old vampire. They fight their attraction to one another. There seems to be some terrible demon activity afoot that pits the supernatural community at odds with each other. As the battle lines are drawn and the evi...more

Ravenous is the first book in the Dark Forgotten series by Sharon Ashwood. It follows the story of witch Holly Carver and her business partner vampire Alessandro Caravelli. Together they run a paranormal investigation business so that Holly can afford to go to college. After an accident when she was younger Holly cannot access all of her magic and can only perform little M magic as the big M magic leaves her in terrible pain. They are called out to investigate a haunted house where some students...more
After some time, I decided to read a book without reading any reviews about it. I was not disappointed at all! “Ravenous” is the first book in The Dark Forgotten series by Sharon Ashwood and a very interesting read.

A blog I saw "highly recommended" this book. I will NOT be checking that blog for more suggestions.
I agree with lots of the other reviewers here. Holy was a flake. Alessandro was supposed to be so sexy, but her description (long, flowing, blonde, wavy hair and wearing colorful, 80's disco clothes) was so NOT appealing.
I guess if you like fantasy novels with goblins, changlings, werewolves, demons, pixies, etc, you might like this. But, unless you are really into that, it's not worth it.

4 and 3/4 stars!
I'm so grateful that there was a clearcut victory in this book and a clearcut happy ending for the main characters, even though it's part of a series.
Characters with dimension, devious plot, snappy lines. Hard to know what else I would want.
Here's a sample early on of the wit. Holly (witch) and Alessandro (vampire) are going into a house that has basically swallowed six people already:

This book started out slow for me, real easy to put down, until I hit the 2/3 mark, then things picked up and it was hard to put down.
I liked Holly and how as a witch, the power was in the family lines and the houses. Some of the things the house could do were funny and I wish that I had a house like that. this is so rachel morgan meets early jean claude. it is a really good mix turns out. this book was really well rounded. parts made me laugh, others were action packed, and of course there was a healthy dose of inevitable romance. i assumed that we were going to follow holly through the next books but it doesn't really seem like that is the case. that kind of makes me sad. i guess if that is my only complaint about the book it is a good thing. we got introduced to pretty much every type of preter...more
Holly is a registered witch who exorcises houses to earn tuition money. When one particular haunted house almost kills her and her boyfriend, all is not as it seems.
