Nikolaos van Dam offers an insightful and informative analysis of the role of sectarianism and other forms of factionalism in the struggle for power in Syria.

Being born after the bloody events of the early 1980's, living most of the time outside Syria, and being largely uninterested in politics, I have been until recently pretty ignorant of the socio-political history of Syria. This was obviously a landmark work at a time. The author provided research on Syrian sectarianism and regionalism from 1940s to 1980s, a topic that was taboo inside Syria and evidence was hard to find. But now that his point has been proven by the passage of time, it is difficult to praise the work, because as it has been updated in succesive editions it has switched directions.
