This is a good introduction to Russia as it is today (before the Ukraine crisis at least). While there is some historical info, much of the work is appropriately focused on contemporary Russian politics, society, culture, media, economics, and foreign policy. Bacon draws from a variety of viewpoints and sources, and in the end determines that Russia is neither a Western liberal democracy nor the Soviet Union 2.0, but a unique and complex nation still struggling to find its place on the world sta ...more

Good overview of the political changes that occurred during the changeover from the Soviet Union to after the break up, with some insight into the political, religious, cultural, economic activities. It doesn't give much information about specific regions within the country.

While not a big page turner, it was really good for what it was and gave me a lot of important information in an understandable and not-too-dense way. Feel much more prepared for Russia after reading it.
