Born Sophie, a minor princess of Germany, she became Catherine the Great, Empress of Russia.....

This is a romanticised take on her story from childhood to early days of sole rule, but for the most part it follows facts, with some great characterisations thrown in. Her husband, Peter, is a fabulous read: a cruel, childish, half-mad, drunken buffoon, preferring to play with his toy soldiers rather than consummate his marriage – and no, that’s not a euphemism! A somewhat romanticized take on the life of Catherine the Great, but still enjoyable. Loved the way the author wrote Peter's character and he most definitely stole the show. Full review here,

A very entertaining look at the life of Catherine the Great of Russia, from her childhood as a impoverished princess in Germany, to her coronation as Tsarina of Russia. Motley's historical fiction Men on White Horses centers around the rise to power of Russia's great empress, Catherine the Great. From her childhood as an impoverished minor German princess to her marriage to the somewhat crazy heir to the Russian throne, Catherine had to navigate some pretty tricky political waters to save her own neck.
