The year is 1902. The place is New York City. It is a world of huge mansions and society balls, but only footsteps away are the city's darkest back alleyways. It is a time of glamour and wealth—scandal and corruption. One cold winter night, a little boy is kidnapped from his own bed while his parents attend a neighbor's elegant ball. And Francesca Cahill, the daughter of t ...more

I read this a long time ago, and discovered a few significant forgotten plot points. All and all, my original rating stands. This is the first book in Brenda Joyce's Francesca Cahill mystery series. This book was a departure from her more well known historical romance novels. Francesca is the beautiful, but secret bluestocking daughter of 1900's industrialist Andrew Cahill. Her mother Julia worries that unlike the other women in the family, she has absolutely no interest in the social whirl or s ...more

I love this book and this nine book series so much that if I had three wishes one of them would be go back and reread these for the first time.

Also: #TeamBragg. If you read these you'll know what I'm talking about.

This was a good introduction to the Deadly series although I was hoping for a little more.

I've read a few of Brenda Joyce's books before and have mixed feelings about her work. I really enjoyed two of her books in the De Warren Dynasty series and then couldn't stand most of the other ones. I had high hopes for the Deadly series mainly because I was really intrigued with a type of modern, Sherlock-Holmes esque type of romance that featured a woman in the lead crime-solving role. I was also very

I think that this book was better the first time I read it, when I was, more or less, as innocent as Francesca. I never really formed much of an attachment to Rick Bragg and always preferred Hart. Re-reading Bragg's introduction did not alter my opinion. He starts off completely stand off-ish and I don't really see where that ends. Even when I was new to the Romance genre, this was my second book, I could see that Bragg and Francesca just did not make a good match.
The "clues" that were set up

Julia and Andrew Cahill were having a dinner party. Francesca Cahill, their daughter, had promised not to be late. She was running behind because she was studying for a college exam the next day. She was attending college without telling her parents. The new police commissioner, Rick Bragg, was invited. After the party, it was discovered that their neighbor's son was kidnapped while Emily and Richard Burton were attending the party. Rick was called in to help find the Jonny Burton.

I really enjoyed this book. The mystery was believable, especially considering it was a historical fiction novel and usually the suspense in these books are either very obvious or not accurate for the time period. While this is technically a romantic suspense novel, the romance in the story is very slow to build and the h/h only have one scene where they come together. Francesca's character was at times TSTL as she kept getting herself into situations that seemed crazy and unnecessary. Her motiv ...more

I am very disappointed with the heroine's character (or lack thereof).
This is a not a romance story, there was never a chemistry between the 2.
Again, the most irritating, stupid, annoying heroine ever written. I had a terrible headache reading her POV.

When I am looking for a romance novel with some mystery thrown in, I almost always turn to Amanda Quick and Jo Beverly. Their books never fail to entertain and are well written. From time to time I have picked up Brenda Joyce's books and they have, until now, been tried and true. I have read the first 3 in this Francesca Cahill series and I am so very disappointed. The writing is terrible, the character of Francesca is an idiot and her husband, as of the end of the third book, is a whining child ...more

This book fell a little short of what I hoped it would be. I enjoyed the main plot of the kidnapped child. I was kept guessing the entire book and it was a solid mystery. I thought all the adultery and little subplots were a bit distracting. There wasn't even remotely a conclusion on any of them. It would have been nice to see SOME of the loose ends tied before the story ended.

The heroine of the book was somewhat disappointing. She was a lot more girly than she imagined herself not to be. I'm so

It’s 1902 in New York City and Francesca, a 20-year-old bluestocking, openly works for reform while secretly attending Brainard College. She is the youngest of three and still lives at home with her parents in what is called the Marble Palace because of its opulence. Francesca is determined to get a journalism degree and become the first woman reporter for a major New York newspaper and her mother is just as determined to see her marry well. I found Deadly Love in the mystery section at Border’s. It didn’t take long to figure out that the author, B.D. Joyce, was Brenda Joyce. I’d enjoyed her romance novels featuring the Bragg family. In fact, they’re buried two-rows deep in my bookshelves. The introduction to her new series read: “Welcome to the world of Francesca Cahill, crime solver extraordinaire. Francesca is no ordinary heroine. She refuses to bow to convention, wears her heart on her sleeve, and is determined to right the ills ...more

This book doesn't exactly read like your average historical romance. First, the setting is a little different; while most historical romances take place in regency or Victorian England, this one is set in turn-of-the-century New York City. While the time frame might make it easier for the author to portray the characters and lifestyle of the time (early 20th century New Yorkers had a few of our modern commodities, like electricity, telephones and even typewriters), it is also hard to capture the ...more

I really wanted to like this book, but I couldn't. The main characters irritated me at every step. For as often as the other characters talked about how smart she is, Francesca made a lot of stupid decisions. I had to read it in small doses because I kept getting annoyed. The writing is good, and Joyce moves the plot along nicely, but I couldn't get past the flawed characters.

This was more like a 2 and 1/2 stars...I mean I liked the mystery that was the meat of the story, but it had a hard time deciding what it wanted to be (romance or mystery) as there was no real interaction between the hero and heroine. And I do get that it is a series so there is a leading up to quality but looking at the descriptions for the others, it's unsure whether they actually get their HEA which is something I always want in my romances. A tad things were unbelievable like when it came ou ...more

I really enjoyed the whole Deadly series. There are nine books in the series and every single book is good. This isn't a romance series of the usual sort. Francesca Cahill is a young woman in NYC in the early 1900's. It's rare to find a romance written in that time period. Throughout the series, she's involved with TWO men, not just one. Most romance novels have cookie-cutter heros, interchangeable from one novel to the next. In this book, Brenda gives us TWO heros, brothers, who are very differ ...more

This series revolves around Francesca Cahill, a woman who helps the police department solve cases in 1902 New York City. Francesca is an unconventional woman-an heiress, social reformer and self proclaimed bluestocking who discovers she has a penchant for using deductive reasoning to solve crimes. There is action, romance, and suspense in each book. The main and secondary characters are well developed and pull you into their lives as you read. A bit soap opera-ish but right down my alley for rec ...more

I read the other books in this series before reading this book so I always wonder how Francesca and Joe, the young kid who helps Francesca with her mysteries, because he is from the poor side of town; now I know how they met. :) I like all the characters in the book but Joe is a scrapper even though he is young will not back down not even the police.
