bizarre.
I think it's better not to try and explain this novel at all...all I'll say is that it seems to be dealing with the concept of guilt, but mostly what one will remember is the Old Folks' Fair (auction of old people for buyers' personal abuse), Glory Hallelujah who takes upon himself all of the shame of the villagers in exchange for gold that he is not permitted to spend, blue slugs that make you fly, and psychoanalysis equalling doggy-style sex.
very funny. very weird. Even Vian's ...more

after the first couple of chapters, i almost stopped reading this book, but am glad i continued. i wasn't quite in the mood for an author playing at writing a book, making quite obvious that there aren't rules/consistency in this blatantly fantasy world, but vian's near-ridiculous playing with words and fantastical town - his lightheartedness, attention to detail, & ability to poke fun at conventions like even the date at the beginning of a chapeter (switching midway from 23 september etc to...more

"Heartsnatcher" was Boris Vian's last novel and it has a sadness attached to it. Here Vian goes after the "family unit" with great hysterical results. And again it's his genius to match the moods into a crazy narrative. Vian is like a great bartender, who knows how to mix if not the perfect drink, then at the very least a cocktail that you will never forget.

recommends it for:
Kevin Elliott, J.R.
Great awkward story from the man who brought many American Jazz greats to take residency in the Jazz club of Paris' Cellar sessions...This story and Vian's style is not unlike some of Jazz's most experimental grounds, it wanders off into complete madness and imaginary worlds.
I highly recommend this because i just like the author so much for doing what he did in a very structured and rigid literary World in France. This man was a punk...

The day after I read the chapter in this book describing the crucifixion of a horse, a friend sent me a link to a website devoted to 'horse-haters'.
Vian has a knack for descriptions of atmospheres and the natural world as well as for making up words.

Le plus étrange et l'un des plus beau textes de Vian. Le seul moyen d'apprécier est de se laisser séduire par son monde.

For fans of Lois Lowry's The Giver, Vian's book is sort of The Taker.
