I find it very difficult to write a review for this book. I suppose I'll start with the fact that I'd expected the book to focus more on the actual "Fantastical Preserve" - ie, what a caretaker actually does day-in and day-out to care for magical creatures. However, there really wasn't any of that. Or very little at least. It was more like a giant patch of land where the magical beings could exist. Which, is fine, just not what I'd expected.
So, now for the unfortunate things - a...more

It was hard to determine what rating to give this book--I think 2.5 is my verdict. For "interesting concept" I'd give it four stars--but for execution/delivery only two stars. On "fulfilling expectations" I'd give it one star. This is one of the most disappointing reads I've come across. Thankfully the final few chapters were decent, so that saved the book from being a dismal failure in my mind.

Without giving away too much of the plot, I must say that this book is N...more

It's very rare, in this day and age of Harry Potter mania (and yes, I admit I'm a very devoted victim!) to find a fantasy story that can actually hold your attention. With FABLEHAVEN, though, new author Brandon Mull manages to do just that from the very first page to the last. Not to mention, thank the fairies, that there's already another book planned in the series.

The premise is simple enough: two siblings, thirteen-year-old Kendra and her eleven-yea...more

I really enjoyed this book. It's different from many other popular fantasy books, because there is a complete family structure included. No orphan, no "who could the mother / father be?", no "who's going to be the 'father/mentor' figure that gets killed?" Not here -- there's a mother, a father, and two sets of grandparents, one set of whom die before the first book in an ordinary gas leak. Due to their maternal grandparents death, they are introduced to Fablehaven and it...more

Cute story about a preserve for mythical creatures, both good and bad (kind of like the Forbidden Forest in Harry Potter), set in New England, current day. A brother and sister are sent to stay with their grandparents while their parents go on a vacation. Unfortunately this isn't a really good time for visitors, as the grandmother is missing and a dangerous holiday for the mythical creatures is coming up soon. The children refuse to sit and twiddle their thumbs for the two weeks that they are...more

My daughter, Sarah, (8 years old, but a great reader) and I have loved this book, as well as its sequel, Rise of the Evening Star. She is currently reading the third, Grip of the Shadow Plague because she snatched it up before I could! Brandon Mull (another LDS author...they seems to be everywhere...) has created a vibrant fantasy series with great characters and snappy dialogue. Because there are both a brother and sister at the center of the intrigue, this will appeal to both boys and girls...more

This book came highly recommended by more than one friend who knows about my love for fantasy novels. I enjoyed it so much that I read it in less than 24 hours! Now I can't wait to go back through, looking for subtle hints I might have missed on my first reading.

Two youngsters are sent to stay with their odd grandparents while their parents are off on a cruise. Right away, things seem off. Very specific areas of the expansive estate are deemed off-limits by their grandfather and the kids...more

Fablehaven is about two siblings who go to stay with their grandparents while their parents are on a cruise. Unbeknownst to them, but knownst to me (and you, by the end of the sentence), their grandparents are caretakers of a hidden preserve for fantastic and magical creatures. The book is the story of their discovery, adventures, and misadventures as they discover that some of the generally accepted laws of reality aren't so much rules as sugg...more

While their parents are off on a 2 week cruise, Kendra and Seth are sent to stay with their grandparents, which they think will be boring beyond belief... but they couldn't be more wrong! Their grandparents live on the magical preserve, Fablehaven, a refuge for fairies, trolls, satyrs, and many of the things that go BUMP! in the night.

Overwhelmed and excited by all that the house and its vast yard have to offer, Kendra and Seth both exhibit very different approaches to interacting with Fable...more

The rep who brought in the reader for Fablehaven was really excited about it. And, you know, I'm up for reading about sanctuaries for magical animals. Pity then, I started reading and thought - I'm supposed to care why? I'm starting to wonder if I'm getting old. Which is silly because I read plenty of kids' fantasy. Such a plentitude that I'm probably getting pickier.

The main character, Kendra, was very bland. Her characterisation was, basically, that she didn't like breaking rules (although...more

Wow! Now that is there no Harry Potter to read, I was ready for a new magical series. This is it! Very realistic main characters – even the fairies, witches, and nymphs are believable! Perfect new fantasy series!

I'm amazed how much I liked this book. I think I figured I would read it and think, "That was a cute book," and then move on. However, I found myself utterly sucked in to Fablehaven.
The sense of detail and the vivid descriptions are wonderful. It's been a long time since I've been so repulsed by a villain just from the description. I was cringing.
And, I must admit, I had moments of awful anxiety and actually felt myself getting that fun scared feeling that made me want to hide un...more

I treated myself to something a bit different this weekend and started the Fablehaven series. It's a great idea for a story and draws you gently into the whole fantasy thing...a doorway I don't easily enter. The only thing I didn't like was that the writing felt so choppy and jarring. Since we are always looking for the perfect marriage of content and form, why would an author, who is writing about fairies flitting about a garden and swans gliding across a pond not want his writing to feel li...more

Siblings Kendra and Seth are shipped off the their grandparents when their parents go on a cruise. The kids do not know their Grandma and Grandpa Sorensen well and have never visited them before.

When the children discover that their grandparents are actually the caretakers of a game preserve full of magical creatures, they are at turns fascinated, excited, and alarmed. The premise of this book is terrific: two children stay at their grandparents' house for two weeks, and while they are there, they learn that their grandparents are the caretakers of a sanctuary for mystical creatures. There are strict rules that the children must follow to stay safe. As the children consciously break and keep the rules, the book introduces really interesting ideas about the nature of laws and the consequences of breaking and keeping them. There was also great material about ...more

I gave this book to John for Christmas in 2006 and have put off reading it until this week. Ben is actually the first in the family to read it and then demand the second and beg for the third. At that point, I knew it had to be good. John stole it out from under me while I was reading and has read the second one twice and is begging for jobs to earn money for the third!

As I read, I mentally devised the quality discussions, moral lessons and FHEs that could come from this book. However, i...more

This book has to be one of the slowest books I have ever read. First off it was dubbed as a "teen" book. I'm not sure any kid over the age of 10 would find this book intresting. 100 pages into the book I was finding myself hoping that the children would be harmed just so that something would happen.

The idea of the book was great but the writing just plain sucked. Every sentence started with "Kendra ....." "Seth...." "He....." "She.....". Whe...more

It’s a great read for kids who are devastated that there won't be any more Harry Potter. With two main characters Kendra and Seth it’s a great sibling story for the fantasy loving "reader" set. The premise is that fae creatures of all kinds have either retreated willingly or have been imprisoned on magical preserves scattered all over the world. Each preserve has guardians whose job it is to keep the peace and protect the denizens of the preserve from each other and from the world ...more

I would put this book right up there with Harry Potter! It is fantastical and magical and the characters are wonderful! Brother and sister, Kendra and Seth find out their grandfather is the caretaker of a huge magical, mystical preserve, one of only five in the world! If you like fantasy this book has it all, ogres, satyrs, witches, fairies, you name it! Fablehaven is one of the last santuaries and strongholds of true magic. However, Kendra and her brother Seth learn that Fablehaven is not ...more
