I find it very difficult to write a review for this book. I suppose I'll start with the fact that I'd expected the book to focus more on the actual "Fantastical Preserve" - ie, what a caretaker actually does day-in and day-out to care for magical creatures. However, there really wasn't any of that. Or very little at least. It was more like a giant patch of land where the magical beings could exist. Which, is fine, just not what I'd expected.

It was hard to determine what rating to give this book--I think 2.5 is my verdict. For "interesting concept" I'd give it four stars--but for execution/delivery only two stars. On "fulfilling expectations" I'd give it one star. This is one of the most disappointing reads I've come across. Thankfully the final few chapters were decent, so that saved the book from being a dismal failure in my mind.

It's very rare, in this day and age of Harry Potter mania (and yes, I admit I'm a very devoted victim!) to find a fantasy story that can actually hold your attention. With FABLEHAVEN, though, new author Brandon Mull manages to do just that from the very first page to the last. Not to mention, thank the fairies, that there's already another book planned in the series.

I really enjoyed this book. It's different from many other popular fantasy books, because there is a complete family structure included. No orphan, no "who could the mother / father be?", no "who's going to be the 'father/mentor' figure that gets killed?" Not here -- there's a mother, a father, and two sets of grandparents, one set of whom die before the first book in an ordinary gas leak. Due to their maternal grandparents death, they are introduced to Fablehaven and it...more

Cute story about a preserve for mythical creatures, both good and bad (kind of like the Forbidden Forest in Harry Potter), set in New England, current day. A brother and sister are sent to stay with their grandparents while their parents go on a vacation. Unfortunately this isn't a really good time for visitors, as the grandmother is missing and a dangerous holiday for the mythical creatures is coming up soon. The children refuse to sit and twiddle their thumbs for the two weeks that they are...more

My daughter, Sarah, (8 years old, but a great reader) and I have loved this book, as well as its sequel, Rise of the Evening Star. She is currently reading the third, Grip of the Shadow Plague because she snatched it up before I could! Brandon Mull (another LDS author...they seems to be everywhere...) has created a vibrant fantasy series with great characters and snappy dialogue. Because there are both a brother and sister at the center of the intrigue, this will appeal to both boys and girls...more

Giving it a five! A great childrens/adult fantasy exploration with real children-types--the ones who aren't always perfect, who act without thinking at times, and then when actually thinking, sometimes don't even really know what is the best choice, even though they may amazingly want to make a good choice.

This book came highly recommended by more than one friend who knows about my love for fantasy novels. I enjoyed it so much that I read it in less than 24 hours! Now I can't wait to go back through, looking for subtle hints I might have missed on my first reading.

I finished this tonight, much to Isaac's delight. I can see why he loved it. I thought it was pretty good. It is not my favorite genre and although I thought it was creative, I thought it lacked some of the charm of Harry Potter (which is fine, but since the two have been compared with each other, I thought I would just throw that out there.)
The character of Seth bugged the heck out of me because he seemed incapable of doing what he was told. That bugs me enough when my own kids act that...more

I liked this book quite a bit, and I'm looking forward to what Brandon Mull does with the series in the future.
My only issue is that the Seth character is so frustratingly annoying that he's almost reason enough to stop reading. It takes a bit for the story to kick in, which I'm ok with, but the treatment of Seth's character and his shortcomings reads like laziness on Mull's part. It's easily forgivable, as it's his first novel, but it...more

Fablehaven is about two siblings who go to stay with their grandparents while their parents are on a cruise. Unbeknownst to them, but knownst to me (and you, by the end of the sentence), their grandparents are caretakers of a hidden preserve for fantastic and magical creatures. The book is the story of their discovery, adventures, and misadventures as they discover that some of the generally accepted laws of reality aren't so much rules as sugg...more

While their parents are off on a 2 week cruise, Kendra and Seth are sent to stay with their grandparents, which they think will be boring beyond belief... but they couldn't be more wrong! Their grandparents live on the magical preserve, Fablehaven, a refuge for fairies, trolls, satyrs, and many of the things that go BUMP! in the night.

The rep who brought in the reader for Fablehaven was really excited about it. And, you know, I'm up for reading about sanctuaries for magical animals. Pity then, I started reading and thought - I'm supposed to care why? I'm starting to wonder if I'm getting old. Which is silly because I read plenty of kids' fantasy. Such a plentitude that I'm probably getting pickier.

Wow! Now that is there no Harry Potter to read, I was ready for a new magical series. This is it! Very realistic main characters – even the fairies, witches, and nymphs are believable! Perfect new fantasy series!

Although this is a teen/young adult fantasy book, I thoroughly enjoyed it. The author is incredibly creative--what a mind! It's about two young children who discover a mystical world on their grandparent's property--a world of mystical creatures in a hidden society where they find out their grandparents are the caretakers of this secret refuge. They encounter both good and evil within this magical world and are drawn in through curiosity and through their own mistakes to help save Fablehaven fro...more

I'm amazed how much I liked this book. I think I figured I would read it and think, "That was a cute book," and then move on. However, I found myself utterly sucked in to Fablehaven.
The sense of detail and the vivid descriptions are wonderful. It's been a long time since I've been so repulsed by a villain just from the description. I was cringing.
And, I must admit, I had moments of awful anxiety and actually felt myself getting that fun scared feeling that made me want to hide un...more

I treated myself to something a bit different this weekend and started the Fablehaven series. It's a great idea for a story and draws you gently into the whole fantasy thing...a doorway I don't easily enter. The only thing I didn't like was that the writing felt so choppy and jarring. Since we are always looking for the perfect marriage of content and form, why would an author, who is writing about fairies flitting about a garden and swans gliding across a pond not want his writing to feel li...more

Quite enjoyable! I was drawn into the book immediately with the opening lines. As Kendra stares out the window she ponders what life is like: “When the flurry of motion became too much, she looked up ahead and fixed her gaze on a particular tree, following it as it slowly approached, streaked past, and then gradually receded behind her. Was life like that? You could look ahead to the future or back at the past, but the present moved too quickly to absorb. Maybe sometimes. Not today.” ...more
