This book was not entirely successful for me. I thought the author wove her complex plot well, but I don't think she was as successful with her characterizations. In a story such as this one, where the author is trying to cast doubt as to whether a character is a hero or a villain, she has to make a plausible case for both sides. Unfortunately in this story, the author only plausibly makes a case for villainy. In fact, I consistently found myself rooting for the heroine to tell the man to get lo ...more

Yes, I know that I called The Third Heiress both contemporary and historical. Hence the need for my newest bookshelf - hybrid. There are two stories in this book starring two different heroines. The main tale is of Jill Gallagher. It opens on the worst day of her life. Her finance, Hal Sheldon, is killed when Jill loses control of the car she is driving and crashes into a tree. Jill decides to accompany his body back to London. She is horrified when Hal's family treats her with hatred and disdai ...more
This was an excellent story . It is well written mystery. I exchange books to read with some older ladies and was pleased to have a book to share. However, Brenda Joyce ruined it with 2 graphic sex scenes toward the end. I like romance but leaving some details to the imagination is best than too much. Thus a 4 star book only gets 3 stars and I will not be sharing the book.

Intriguing, Brenda Joyce has captured my mind and heart in every way

The Third Heiress by Brenda Joyce tells of a story of girl, Jillian Gallagher, who was unknowingly thrown into a world where “old money” is of the matter and where titles and etiquette are more of value than a person’s morale. Unbeknownst to her, the tragic death of her almost-fiance, Harold Sheldon, is the key to discovering the family she didn’t know she had and clouded in the mist of lies and forgotten friendship. Very good book but I can't help but be disappointed on several levels. First, I was not overly convinced on the relationship with Jill & Alex....basically sex & not much else. Secondly I was horrified that Edward never discovered what happen to Kate....extremely sad ending for their relationship. It would have been great to see Edward discover Anne's treachery & she somehow punished! Another mystery is why was Hal so obsessed with Kate in the first place? It would have been interesti ...more

At different points of this story I thought that I might have read this story before, but by the end I realized I hadn’t. The twists and turns the story took were very interesting. Now the “bedroom” scenes were a little over the top and I am glad there were only two of them in the entire story. Some authors don’t understand “fading to black” or “less is more” as this book shows. This book must have been earlier in her career; some of the other Brenda Joyce books are not so vocal on certain aspec ...more

This is a nicely written novel that is more or less a
mystery. The main character is doing some investigation
regarding her possible ancestry; but since the history
involves a possible high-level scandal for a noble
English family, the family of her deceased boyfriend,
there is some mysterious opposition. The opposition
includes some scare tactics, a near-fatal accident,
and an intention to murder.
There is also a nice romantic story intertwined.
The ending was OK, but I don't think it answered some
There has been some real bad reviews on this book but I thought it was wonderful! It lost a star from me only because I would have liked the roles of Alex and Thomas reversed. Thomas was far more appealing in a more dangerous and mysterious way, and the chemistry between Thomas and Jill throughout the book was electric. I suspected early on that's where Brenda Joyce was headed and halfway through the book couldn't figure out how to bring the two together because of the family ties. Bummer. I hav ...more

Oh my gosh! I was torn reading this book. During the beginning I was pulled into Hal and Jill's story, and I couldn't put the book down!

Then story slowed a bit in the middle. I felt like Jill was going way over board in her search to find out about Kate Gallagher, but it turned out to be worth it!

This book is filled with mystery, secrets, and Betrayals with a capital "B"!!

The Sheldon family was devoted to keeping the family protected from any slander, and would do almost anything to keep it's

A good book! I could not seem to put this book down. Great plot which keeps you guessing till the end.
Great book! I couldn't seem to put this book down. Like the other books I've read by this author, this is a real page turner. Great plot that kept me guessing. Jill is engaged and in love to a guy she thinks is perfect. But then they have an accident, and she starts learning more and more about her finance`, making her realize he wasn't as wonderful as she thought he was. She's a struggling American, and he's rich and British. She travels to England, and discovers that she might even be distantl ...more

One of my favorites!
Enjoyable story.
This was pure escapism. It had it's moments...of trash, flash and cash. And then some people died. And others fell in love, and some history was thrown in. The writing wasn't the best, a lot of things were repeated, over, and over, "She felt she couldn't trust him, and yet..." "How could she trust him? How to trust him, when he had said/done this...?" Alright already, I get it, she doesn't trust him. Then, next thing you know, she's nekkid in bed with him. Well, I guess she got over her trust is ...more

I found the plot of The Third Heiress fascinating reading that kept me in suspense until the very end which came as a surprise. Although there are some loose ends, the story of Kate Gallagher, an heiress who disappeared in 1909, and her best friend Anne who ended up marrrying Kate's lover is well developed and compelling as well as the contemporary relationship between Jill Gallagher and Alex Preston. Once I started reading this book, I did not want to put it down.

Recommended to H.A. by: I read a preview of it in the back of another book years ago.
Pretty average storyline. I enjoyed the flashbacks, but they were completely disconnected from the main story, which made them lose a lot of their power. The writing was surprisingly weak -- I think pretty much every NEVER DO THIS writing rule was broken over and over again. Especially "Show, don't tell." There's WAY too much tell in this book. The sex scenes were hot and the twists were okay, but it's not a keeper. It'll be going back on my Swaptree trade shelf.
Light and predictable, a break from heavy reading.
The further I read the more interested I became in the mystery. I did not have the murder solved until the end of the book. However I did skip over a lot of "soap opera" verbage to get to the more interestring passages.

I liked the mystery part of the book and also I liked how the writer switched off between the past and the present as the characters found each clue. The mystery made the characters interact with one another and their romance develops as they help each other solve the mystery.
Great read! I found it very hard to put this book down and was totally unprepared for the twist at the very end. I also thought that Jill's obsession with finding out about Kate was a bit much but in the end it helped to catch the reader off guard for the twist.
This was one of the very first romance novels i ever read. Brenda Joyce and the third heiress had me completely hooked on all things mystery/paranormal/ and romancey. It has been years but Im about to read it again. See what i missed when i was younger.

I picked this book up and could not put it down. I ended up finishing the last few chapters in the car because I just couldn't wait til I got home to find out what happened. Intriguing!
Supernatural- Historical & Contemporary all mixed into one story. This was excellent filled with suspense and I couldn't figure it out until the end. Loved it.
