by
Janet Dean (Goodreads Author)
The "orphan train" seemed like small-town spinster Adelaide Crum's last chance to know the simple joys of family life. GREAT BOOK!!!...Great storyline about women's rights and spousal and abuse. And how these issues were probably dealt with in the late 1800's....LOVED Addie & Charles. Addies longing to adopt a child (a daughter) her difficulty to achieve her dream and all the obstacles....Because she was unmarried (a spinster) at that time period. Addie's adorable relationship with little Emma!!!! Just a GREAT Historical read!!! I'd recommend it even if your not crazy about romance, but you ARE in to Histori...more
This was a very enjoyable story, and very suspenseful in parts. Historical fiction is one of my favorite genres, and reading about an orphan train in the late 1890's that stopped in Noblesville, Indiana was fascinating, especially since I live in that area. I understand the actual train the story is based on was years earlier than the time period the author placed the story in, but it was neat to know that it was partially based on an actual event. Many characters in this novel are dealing with,...more
Not my usual read...started off rather slow for me, and I even put it down for a day after the first two chapters because the subject matter of Christianity and adoption turned me off. I felt guilty about putting the book down and am glad I picked it back up. The mystery, romance, love of child, relationships past and present made for an excellent read.
Cute story
It is heart wrenching to know that orphans were taken in just to be farm workers, although I suppose even the farmers own children could be used for working in the same way
Adelaide pushes for rights for women in a time when there weren't many. She wanted to be able to take in one of the orphan's from the train but the men in charge refused to allow a single woman to care for a child.
The book was also on carrying our childhoods with us into adulthood.
A good read.
