Skip the sign language dictionaries and go straight for this book if you are an ASL novice. The perfect book to get a quick working vocabulary for basic communicating with a deaf person who uses ASL.
My tepid response to this books comes from one thing: I did not like the illustrations. This book has the potential to be amazing, but in the next edition they need to redo the drawing with a collection that is more clear.
This is the same review I gave for The American Sign Language Phrase Book -- same author, same problem. Perhaps my review of Lou Fant's work is too subjective; I would recommend that you use your library to find the book that is right for you and then purchase it.

It is very helpful and the signs are easy to see! It is a great book for beginners.
