To a mortician, the preparation of a corpse is an art. The smooth, silent exchange of blood and embalming fluid is like a symphony to be orchestrated. The presentation of the deceased -- lying in a shining casket framed by flowers -- is an exquisitely composed tableau. And the burial itself is the magnificent climax to his craftsmanship. — Clive Barker also knows how to pr ...more

If you're reading this after the week ending on August 21, 2016, you can skip to the next paragraph. For those of your reading it this week, you might be wondering why I've been reviewing so much lately. The short answer is, I have nothing better to do but read and play video games. Problems with my house have seen my family moved into my mother's place for the next week. I cannot find a place to write comfortably, so I'm reading even more than usual. The natural byproduct of all this free time ...more

Volume Three of Clive Barkers Books of Blood kicks off with Son of Celluloid and an escaped convict who dies in the building housing a movie theatre. His cancer evolves into a physical mass feeding on the strong emotions present and we witness all the fuckery that prevails.

Rawhead Rex sees a farmer inadvertently awaken an ancient monster that happens to be nine feet tall and quite ferocious with hobbies including killing and eating folk. All taking place in a rather sweet rural setting.

Back in 1984, Clive Barker made his name within the deeply competitive world of horror with the publication of the first three volumes of the macabre short stories 'The Books Of Blood'. Written in his spare time, he admits that he was not expecting them to sell really at all, let alone predict the public response that followed. The release exploded within the horror literature genre, hailing Barker as an exciting and imaginative newcomer. Stephen King, already known as a master in the genre, wen ...more

A special book with a lot of history and personal significance for me. It shattered my book world and I never forgot it. I still refer to many of these stories in conversation.
The first story, Son of Celluloid, is a very unique and otherworldly story. It involves illusions cast upon innocent people, making them believe that they are in a world of film. By now, it’s clear that Clive Barker has a knack for tales that are extremely unreal and quite distinct. Among this book, this is, by far, the most original. This is a decent start to the third book, but this story lacks definite suspense. There are some entertaining sequences when victims believe they are meeting John ...more

Still flawless. I liked this one more than the second volume, and it turns out I had already read "Human Remains" in another story collection (Fangs: The Vampire Archives, Volume 2 I hadn't even added it to my bookshelves).

My favourite story was probably "Rawhead Rex" (because D A M N), and my least favourite "Confessions of a (Pornographer's) Shroud". "Scape-Goats"'s ending was REALLY good, too; I felt it needed a special mention.

I have now read the "Books of Blood 1-3" and although I enjoyed a few of the stories in #1, I felt that #2 was lacking and struggled to finish it. This third installment is by far the best of the 3 in that it has the largest number of high quality stories.

1 - Son of Celluloid - I wasn't a huge fan of this one, a murderer's cancer comes to life after his death in the back of a movie theater and takes on the persona of the films that cross the screen.

2 - Rawhead Rex - The basis of the film by th

I hate myself for achieving adulthood before reading Clive Barker's works. I have yet to be even slightly disappointed. These short stories were terrific and disturbing. Barker has a way of describing carnage and gore in a quiet serene way that makes it all seem almost dreamlike. He's also quite brilliant with his shorts. These tales would suffer under the weight of fluff and extraneous detail. They're just right.
Just two beautiful quotes this time and the mention that Human Remains is probably the best short story I've read so far in this collection:

…that was what the flickering reminded him of, the flicker of celluloid through the gate of a projector, one image hot on the next, the illusion of life created from a perfect sequence of little deaths.

No Indian summer to bless the streets this year: autumn had London in its jaws and was shaking the city bare.

Well I'm finally finished slogging through this one. It's not long by any means at only 196 pages, but such a disappointment from the first two. This collection of stories felt like Barker was pressed on time and had to throw together any half-formed, possibly creepy-ish idea and force it into a rather snooze-worthy storyline. Would recommend the first two, not this one.

Unrelated, but whatever, I had a nightmare/dream (can't decide which) last night that I moved to Canada (free healthcare woo-h

The third one is never as good.

By far the best story in the book, this weird but masterfully written tale doesn't start out enthralling but by the end, you won't be able to put it down.

A really great little tale that, like Jacqualine Ess would have made a great novella

A fair (if cliched) mixture between ghost story and superhero origin story that tries to make ghosts with sheets over thier head scary agian. Does it suc

'Books of Blood: Volume Three' comprises five short stories which feature a compelling fusion of the paranormal and normal.

In 'Son of Celluloid', an escaped convict winds up in a run-down movie theatre. Without realizing that he's about to die, he eventually dies from cancer. However, his cancerous tumour lingers on thus bringing the movies to life. Consequently, some unsuspecting cinema goers find themselves in the midst of life and death. I enjoyed most of the movie scenes which were entertain

Now she saw him for what he was, flotsam from a lost ship of hope. Still a pill-freak, still a theoretical bisexual, still devoted to early Polanski movies and symbolic pacifism.” 3 likes
