"Each of these little books is witty and dramatic and creates a sense of time, place, and character....I cannot think of a better way to introduce oneself and one s friends to Western civilization." Katherine A. Powers, Boston Globe. "Well-written, clear and informed, they have a breezy wit about them....I find them hard to stop reading." Richard Bernstein, New York Times. ...more

Very breezy and entertaining, but definitely not Foucault in 90 minutes. Also, the author's clear dislike and lack of respect for Foucault as a speaker colored most of the book.

As a young man, I would avoid these books because I felt that they were inauthentic and nonintellectual. Of course, I was a fool, and had I read a series of these "____ in 90 minutes", I might have spoken more eloquently about topics I knew nothing about. Instead, I spoke rather inarticulately about topics I knew nothing about. My loss.

It achieved its aim. Interestingly, it was less "explain like I know nothing" than expected, and the author's obvious disdain for Foucault (there's even a sectio

Well done, quick reading w/ detail and thoughts from the author, a quick tour through the works of Foucault w/ biographical details. I think I'll read the others works in his series.

This is a very pleasant read! Done in 90mins ( actually less). If you want to know why academics are so fixated about Foucault, this is a good place to start. His charm is not completely captured in his work; rather, it comes from his ability to stir up the unconscious anxiety about knowing, knowledge, power and reality. I strongly suggest this and may all other philosophers in 90mins for beach reading! It's totally fun and fulfilling!

Not exactly an impartial intro to Foucault! But I didn't know a lot of his personal stuff hence the three stars. Also worth it for occasional comedy value in his descriptions of Foucault cruising head to toe in leather and of Louis Althusser writing his memoirs - 'admitted he hadn't actually read that much Marx' hehe
