This was a funny, silly book that is full of silly zoo characters. As far as teaching poetry, this would probably not be a book that I would choose for a lesson. However, I would definitely use this book to point out some interesting vocabulary words for early elementary students. Paul Simon uses words like skeptical, reactionaries, and missionaries that young children are typically not familiar with yet. This book takes the lyrics to the Simon and Garfunkel tune of the same name and provides illustrations. As a fan of the song, I thought it was kind of fun to read through. But without that context, I'm not sure it completely holds up on its own. I probably don't need to own it or read it again.

Also, I decided to change one of the lyrics for my storytime group as I figured parents wouldn't be to keen on my telling their preschoolers about the zookeeper's drinking habits.

This takes the upbeat Simon and Garfunkle song "At the Zoo" and turns it into an illustrated children's story. I like the way they handle the line "Hamsters turn on frequently." Adults may enjoy it, but the kids aren't likely to get it, though they may simply like to see the animals.

A splendid adaptation of the Paul Simon tune. When reading to little ones, it is hard not to sing rather than just read. :D
