Joselito Honestly and Brilliantly
This was not the first time I've read a memoir written by a man where the story revolves not only around himself, but also around his mother. I still remember reading Nicholas Gage's "Eleni" where I had the urge to go to Greece and visit the grave of Eleni, Mr. Gage's mother. Frank McCourt's mother wasn't dead yet at the end of "Angela's Ashes" but the story was well-crafted and she was so heroic there that I wasted no time finding out what happened later in "'Tis." In both "Eleni" and "Angela's...more

Tu seras ambassadeur, mon fils !

Et s...more

Tra cielo e terra.

Caro Romain,

The main thing that remained in my memory is what Romain Gary said about his mother love to him: when you grow up with love as big as the ocean, you keep looking for such love all your life and end up dying from thirst beside the well. I hope he'll excuse the liberty I took with it-it's been years since i read it. But this is the idea.

This is a memoir written by Romain Gary and is also a book from the 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die. Mr Gary wrote this memoir as a tribute to his mother. Romain Gary is of Jewish and Russian origin became a French citizen. He is the only son of his mother, he never knew who is father was and she raised him single-handedly and single-mindedly. The first chapter is the ending but only a glimpse and it leaves you guessing. Mr. Gary is lying on the beach at Big Sur. He also introduces us to...more

I have mixed up feelings towards this book . It's absolutely optimistic and exactly opposite to everything i love the best ( Camus, Kafka, Sartre) . Author's self irony made me smile so many times while reading it. On the other hand, he lived in my hometown (Vilnius) his entire childhood and still thought of it as part of Poland . "Small town of eastern Poland" made me frown each time , since Lithuania never was a part of Poland , even if it was occupied at the time author lived in Vilnius. None...more

Extraordinaire livre.

Excellent autobiography of the French novelist Romain Gary from his childhood days spent in Poland,Russia and France up until the end of the Second World War, in which he served in the R.A.F. Most of the book is on the relationship between him and his mother (he never really knew his father)who had a profound influence on his life (in a good way). While I think maybe he embellishes some of the details of her life, she was still obviously an amazing woman and mother, and the ending of the book is...more

This book was just amazing. I never would have chosen to read it on my own, but it was the example of modern French literature in a course that I took. Romain Gary is an interesting character all on his own in real life. This book includes parts of his autobiography, but mixed in with fiction so that it's impossible to tell when is real and what is not. It's impossible to not be moved by the end of this book and it's one that I will treasure.

At least twenty years have elapsed since I read this. Mr. Gary's mother was an extraordinary woman and their relationship was close, and unusual. Although it is written in a somewhat romantic, dramatic manner, it is nonetheless one of the most unforgettable memoirs I have ever read. As I write this, I'm promising myself to read it again.

I read it in French ("La promesse de l'aube"). It's a good autobiographic book, about the love of a mother for her only child. She sees in him the next best French warrior, the greatest writer, a Casanova, the next Mozart... And it's not easy for him to keep up with these expectations.

It has a mix of short stories - at a time humoristic, or sad, realistic and touching.

The author commited suicide after 20 years after writing this book. Some experiences he describes in the book anticipate somehow...more

A book I read a long time ago, and that feels still as poignant today: the story of a mother’s excessive expectations, love and attention for her son; the story of the son’s desperate attempts to please the mother, and his feelings of failure.
Or…the sad, pitiful (true) story of a possessive mother, whose love for her son is dependent on how well her reflects her ambitious expectations, who lives vicariously through him and takes so much precedence in his life that his ability to form lasting em...more

Romain Gary, 2 fois prix Goncourt, pour l...more

My very close friend Olivier gave this one to me - I had heard of it, of course (it is very famous in France) but had never read it. Quite an experience. Is it all true, or did Gary's imagination transformed his memories? It doesn't really matter. This tale of a mother whose love for her son feeds her whole life and guides every act she (and he) does is intense and striking. Is this overpowering mother the image of absolute love or a kind of monster? The ending may be a bit predictable, but it s...more

Romain Gary was a Jewish-French novelist, film director, World War II aviator and diplomat. He also wrote under the pen name Émile Ajar.

Born Roman Kacew (Yiddish: קצב, Russian: Кацев), Romain Gary grew up in Vilnius to a family of Lithuanian Jews. He changed his name to Romain Gary when he escaped occupied France to fight with Great Britain against Germany in WWII. His father, Arieh-Leib Kacew, ab...more
