Self-help books seem to be a dime a dozen. This book is actually fiction with the noble aim of improving the person who is reading it like a self-help book.

The book itself centers around the story of a former big-shot lawyer. The lawyer had a self-described wake-up call after a heart attack. This rude awakening led him to sell his possessions and to look for a more meaningful life from certain sages in the East. Of course, the rest of the book is him recounting what he learned.

I was walking through the aisles of my local bookstore and noticed this book displayed face-up on a table. Its title caught me, so I stepped back to pick it up and flash through to gather a sense of whether I wanted to read it in greater depth or not. I enjoy philosophic and inspirational books as a way of honing my ethics, of reinforcing or improving my ideology so I bought "The Monk..." and I'm glad I did! This is a motivating, palatable book that's easy to read as a story, filled...more

Svevremena, esencijalna i i...more

The fable of a wealthy ivy-league educated lawyer who seemingly has it all:- Wealth, success and the trappings of power. One day he succumbs to a heart attack in the court room, sells all his possessions and goes to India to seek his true purpose. He encounters a mystical village on a mountain called Sylvana and meets sages who instruct him on the best way to live life. He takes the lessons and goes back to New York to reconnect with his mentee and talks about what he learned.

A good concise book which provides insight into defining our daily activities. Sharma tries to map practises in spiritual lines, esp., Indian spritiual practises.
As an Indian, I could see, most of peoples are not following very basic priniciples as per ancient vedic literatures rather just adapts for the sake of showing religion. How true it is? vedic literatures are beyond the religion and it just provides the wisdom of best practises for human being. One such reason why not reached is becaus...more

First of all we have to remember that this is not a novel, it is more a self help, inspirational book but presented in story style. If you expect a Paulo Coelho -like book you will get disappointed, as you will find the story is too cheesy and so does the conversation between Julian - John.

Lots of repetition in this book and too much sales pitches i.e The Sage Sivana's philosophy and way of life, they are depicted as perfect people.

But nevertheless the messages are good, though they are ...more

Is about a work-obsessed lawyer in the Himalayas where he found out the true meaning of life. This book gave me a lot of inspiration and motivation to go on in a very important moment of my life. I think I got this book in the precise time: sometimes we need some help and it comes with monk clothes.

The books talks about integrity. It talks about how to manage a business and become successful at it. Some lessons that it teaches are so obvious that it becomes a good reminder because these lessons are forgotten so often. If are interested in becoming the best leader you can be, i suggest you practice leadership although this book will give helpful insights about leadership and teamwork. There may be points where you will get bored because of its obviousness. You may not learn anything new, bu...more

The first time I read this book I just loved it. I read it at the time when I was asking myself questions regarding 'What to do with my life?'.

I found the book very energizing, giving me a lot of inspiration and motivation to go on and many answers to my questions.

When I read the book the second time, it didn't seem to have the same effect.

PS! Who is looking for great literary value, will be disappointed. Sharma is no writer, but if you can focus on the message, it won't bother.

I liked this book, but what kept me from giving it more stars is that the "story" framing the concepts was kind of weak. I found the writing style when it came to the dialogue between the two main characters a little cheesy or something. What I LOVED about the book was the set of concepts that were all linked by a mnemonic device, and the idea that you need to treat your mind like a beautiful garden. There was a lot of good stuff in here and I am glad I read it.

Still reading and while the ideas presented in the book are good, the writing is clumsy, clunky and hard to digest. While the fictional character of the Monk himself is well developed; I struggle with the dialog and the style in which the book was written. Perhaps it is getting the message out to the masses more in way of a story narrative, but I wonder if for me it would have been better simply written for what it is, a self help book.

Not worth it. Sigh. I had hoped to glean something — anything! — from the book as I had seen selected quotes from it. And the premise was inviting.

I knew of the author when I put the book on reserve (and that he was not really my cup of tea). However, gave him a try ... and still don't like his belief system ... Still think this sort of propaganda is like marshmallow cream: White, fluffy and of no substance.

The Rating is actually 2.5

The first book in self help category that I've read. A lucid written book. It can be a little extra philosophical or preachy at times but I'd suggest you still read it. The story is easy to understand though the overall pace is quite slow. The best part of the book is at times it does make you feel good, so just give it a try.

I can lend you a copy of this book, but currently it's loaned out.

This book was recommended to me by a doctor I met at Biovision 2006 - a conference held in Alexandria, Egypt. He started an inspiring project, and told me anyone could. He recommended this book.

Strangely the book reminds me of the title of that conference, "Changing Lives"

For people yearning to simplify their lives, this book does contain strong inspiration. Unfortunately the amateur quality of the storytelling is a bit distracting. Overall, though, a positive experience. The chapter-end summary material and mnemonic devices were useful in translating words into practice.

What a great fable about a high powered attorney who has a heart attack and almost meets his maker. He decides to change his life and discovers that "what lies behind you and what lies before yoou is nothing compared to what lies within you." Robin Sharma, the author, had me from the start.
