This is a short 'overview' of the history of the many diverse genres of music that have come into the state of Texas, have blended and evolved, have changed into new forms, and have then spread and influenced other sections of the country (and the world). Gary Hartman writes as an historian and indeed the historical aspects of the music are the best part of the book and can be recommended especially to those who have not read and/or heard much about of this music.

This is intended strictly as an overview, so it's tantalizingly devoid of in-depth analysis, but it's a good place to start. I like that the chapters each have a recommended-listening list at the end.
only read bits and pieces for my music reports, but quite informative. provides good general knowledge of history, as well as what it is and is about.
