A great re-imagining of the old Iron Man. I remember watching the original black and white tv series. I don't know why the idea fell out of favour with me but Stark is interesting in the same way that Batman is -- a human possessed of the resources to do something about the problems they see in the world. Stark has the added layer of being out in the open to a degree and using military money to fund his ventures, so there is that whole political dimension which isn't there with Batman. I really ...more

In retrospect, the logical evolution of Tony Stark/Iron Man

In Iron man's extremis, Tony Stark is hellishly injured, while trying to take down some thugs. Facing death, Stark makes a choice that completely heals him... but has various ramifications down the road. On one hand, Tony is a better Iron man, functioning at capacities all together unheard of. On the other hand...Tony might have just put his humanity on hold in ways that don't really hit him until a friend's death in Civil Wa...more

I was never too into Iron Man back when I was reading and collecting comics. However, when my buddy, Erik, recommends a book, it's gonna' be good. Iron Man: Extremis is no exception. Tony Stark (Iron Man) is a complex character dealing with the devil of military weapons development to open the doors to technological advancement for the betterment of humanity. Mallen, the supervillain in this one, is a dumb, damaged redneck hate monger out for revenge against the world. He gets his hands on ...more

I didn't have a very strong desire to read this, but it's one of those arcs that a lot hinges on and I've felt lost lately reading the monthlies. (I learned my lesson skipping Grant Morrison on the "X-Men" and not understanding an X book for years afterwards.)
This volume has a decent enough story, and though computer-enhanced art usually makes me cringe, Granov's stuff is eye-popping. But, as is too often the case with Ellis, a lot of the dialogue feels like Warren Ellis talkin...more

This was pretty cool. Iron Man has had a rocky comic book career, but it seems like he's finally coming into a renaissance. This book is one of the better places for someone new to the character (like me) to start, as this feels a lot like the Robert Downey Jr. characterization. The other book to try would be The Ultimates.

The art is a little stiff, but still gorgeous, and Ellis is the man with the ideas, which added up to be a cool read.

Having read a bunch of issues that deal with the aftereffects of the Extremis virus, I was excited to see how it all came about—especially because this arc was written by Warren Ellis, who has a reputation for being “OMG! Warren Ellis!” However, I was disappointed. This is pretty ho-hum and pedestrian—not nearly as exciting or interesting as I assumed it would be. I was under the impression that Tony was unwilling injected with the virus, but nope: he’s all, “Yeah, better dose me up ...more

With the current trend in comics right now to reinvent the superhero stories or to give them an update for "today's audiences" it appears that Warren Ellis got it right with Iron Man.

Finally, a retcon that makes sense and doesn't really affect the outcome of the entire comic universe it's associated with (I'm pointing at you Spider-Man.)

Although the villain of this book is nothing but a militia redneck it does set the stage for Iron Man's newer suit abilities an...more

A great Iron Man story arc, and a good example of how far super-hero comics have come. And it was illustrated by the genius Adi Granov (can you tell I'm a fan?). Tony Stark has been reinvented for a more modern audience, and I look forward to see where he'll go.

Iron Man, a normal guy in a technological super suit, fights Extremis, a guy who injects technology into him to get powers. The combination of Warren Ellis, who's best at writing jaded dialogue and creepy future science, and Adi Granov, who makes sleek yet chilly computer-enhanced art, works pretty well.
I didn't realize that Tony Stark's identity as Iron Man was not public knowledge (by Civil War it is) but Ellis has fun with the secret identity--Stark always calls the suit his car. E...more

I haven't much enjoyed the forays that Warren Ellis has made into mainstream superhero comics. Oh, I'm a fan of the writer, but he's admittedly not a huge fan of the genre and while he's done great work with super heroes, it's not usually with the well loved and established characters from the big companies.

That being said, I thought this was a great Iron Man run. This is exactly the kind of comic I'd give to someone interested in Iron Man after they saw the movie. Straightforward, b...more

Not bad, not great. Illustrations are in a league of they're own though. Probably the best drawn comic I've ever seen. Loved the style. Too bad the story has been done before.

Easy to get into for people new to Iron Man, but shakes up the character a bit to keep long-time readers interested. Very solid writing, and great art.

I've never been a huge fan of Iron Man, but Warren Ellis' excellent reboot/upgrade of our shiny metal hero, was pretty good, and left me wanting more. A decent read recommended for all superhero fans out there. Also, if you want to see the new film, I'd suggest you read this first since it seems to be a major inspiration for the new film.

UPDATE: I've just reread this after watching the new movie and this was definitely a big inspiration for Iron Man's updated origin. This book also ...more

I'm not a big Iron Man fan, so I don't know why I picked this up from the library. Maybe it was the art style, which looked like a strange breed of digital painting, or maybe it was Warren Ellis' name on the cover. Either way, it was a good read. It dealt with the theft and use of an untested super-soldier serum by a terrorist group. The initial effects of the serum on the human body were pretty interesting and the story concluded nicely.

Unrelated question: Why do original size Mini-...more

Fantastic! This is yet another slam dunk for Warren Ellis. I'm an Iron Man fan again thanks to the movie and this book. This Iron Man feels very relevant and real, with Ellis' characteristic brilliant dialoque and action. And Lest I forget, Adi Granov's art is brilliant in this. I'm now going to have to read the other Marvel work Ellis has done with their mainstream characters.

I really kind of dig Adi Granov's artwork. It has this painterly, three dimensional quality that's reminds one of video game art.

I never read much Iron Man before, thinking rich guys, without any powers, in iron combat suits were kind of dumb, but I really liked the movie and enjoyed this graphic novel.

I like how Ellis updates Iron Man. The conflict Tony Stark has ("Oh, how can I be a superhero and an arms dealer? How ever shall I reconcile that?" but not in those words) is pretty sweet.

Adi Granov's art is superb.

Writing gets lazy at the end.

Normally, I'm not an Iron Man fan. The vivid drawings and engaging storyline seemed innovative, and I appreciated that it had enough about Iron Man's past where I could see the impetus for his decision about his future.
