I have only read "Tonio Kroeger" not the second story. Thomas Mann is a great writer. Love his metaphors and usage of symbols. I particularly recommend this story to: artists, foreigners growing up in Germany, anyone who loves northern Europe, anyone who has been an outsider of some sort. Mann has a good sense of humor.

Hard as hell in the original German, but once you have your "aha!" moment, it almost feels worth it.
