Lawrence Sanders (1920-1998) began his hugely successful writing career in 1969 with this groundbreaking book, which won the Edgar Award for best first novel. Yes, it may seem a little dated now and parts of it read a little like an episode of a 1970's TV crime show, but it is still a fantastic first novel by any standards.

Sanders takes the approach of an author investigating a crime committed in New York on the night of the 31st August/ morning of 1 September 1968 and all the writing is assembl...more

After reading the book: I am surprised to say that I liked this book. It was very suspenseful and I actually would like to see it made into a movie. Lo and behold I just Googled it and realized that a movie directed by Sidney Lumet was done in 1971 with a score by Quincy Jones. The person cast in the lead role is not at all who I envisioned as Anderson, so if you are interested in reading this book, don't look up anything about the movie. And according to Wikipedia, a remake is to be released in...more

This is the first of the "Edward X. Delaney" mysteries, written before the "Deadly Sins" books (I/ve read two, then discovered this one was written previously). Will letcha know how it is.

OK, here we go:This is an interesting description of a crime, a Big Heist of a number of apartments in an upscale apartment house, from a mastermind, several henchmen, and several other masterminds/Dons, etc. This sis all laid out from clandestine tapes of phone conversations, and other such ways of obtaining d...more

My husband's grandfather sent me a Sanders novel, but I saw that it was part of a series starring this detective Delaney (who doesn't make an appearance until the end) and I hate to go out of order; so I started with this one. The audiobook is read but a full cast of narrators, which was very different for me and a lot of fun.

It's such an interesting, modern epistolary type of book, but I doubt that I'd say anything more than what's already been said, since this it's been around for so long But...more

Will this ingenious scheme to burglarize an entire apartment building succeed? Or will the police get wind of what’s happening and stop this before it happens?

This Edgar winning, uniquely constructed mystery is entirely made up of parts of taped conversations and various reports as John Anderson plans his daring raid on an exclusive Manhattan apartment building.

Mystery fans! If you haven’t read this classic, do so soon! I missed this one and am glad I finally read this prize winning mystery.

The low rating here may just be the result of bad timing. I read this book in the time I moved and so reading it was bumped for a litany of reasons. I'm only aware of this book because of the brilliant movie that adapted it. The style is fascinating in theory as there is no prose in this book. Everything in this book is a transcript from a wire tap or a police or FBI report. This solves the problem of flowery prose that drags down most books. However, I just found this to be hard to get into whe...more

If this is the book that launched Sander's career, then I have nothing but disgust for his fans.

Anyway, this was a voyeur's heaven. Listening in on partial conversations, twisted sex, crime planning, etc.

Wasn't much of an interesting story to me. Your mileage may vary.
