Visions of Heat is the second book in Nalini Singh's Psy/Changeling series and yet another great installment. Like I said in my review of Slave to Sensation, I did not expect to like this series. Like I said in my review of Slave to Sensation, I did not expect to like this series. As a matter of fact, I figured that I would read the first one and have no desire to continue the series. Boy was I ever wrong. I'm sitting here at 1:52 A.M. wishing that I had the third book so I could start it right away tomorrow. Alas, it is not to be. But damn, I really need to get out and buy these books!

I loved the way that Singh continued to built the world she created for this series. And I have to say, I don't even really feel like it's in the future. You know how with some books you can tell from the technology, people, whatever that you are in a completely different time? Not so with this series. It actually came as a bit of a shock when I was reading Slave to Sensation reviews and someone mentioned that the series takes place in 2079. I'd say that's a sign of great writing when something so out of the ordinary can feel so natural.

Politics, particularly those of the Psy, played a major role in Visions of Heat, much more than it did in Slave to Sensation, and while I generally do not enjoy reading anything that is strongly based in politics, I found that I actually really enjoyed those aspects. I think, though, that's because it was so critical, so pivotal in Faith's life that it would have felt...empty if those political aspects had been absent, whether they be entirely absent or just there to a lesser extent. I also liked the political aspect because it made Faith's struggle and decision that much more realistic to me because, while I was frustrated that she didn't immediately decide to go off with Vaughn, I could understand: How do you choose to leave everything you've ever known behind, even if it's not what it's always appeared to be, for a world, life, and culture that you've never even experienced? Not an easy choice and one that I liked to see Faith struggle with because, while I like to think it would be easy to follow the love of my life into the unknown, I know that is entirely unrealistic.

Speaking of Faith and Vaughn, I continued to like the characters. Obviously most of them are the same people from the previous book, but I liked getting to see more of them. Sascha and Lucas had a clear presence in the book but I loved the glimpses into Dorian and Clay, and I even liked seeing a little more of Judd, even though I'm not quite sure just how I feel about him yet. And when it came to the main characters? I loved them too. Faith was a brilliant character and I enjoyed reading about her struggles to find her sister's murderer, to find herself and realize how strong she really is. All in all, though, I still preferred Sascha, but Faith was an intriguing character to follow throughout the book. Now, Vaughn, I definitely love him more than Lucas. Dorian still remains my favorite male thus far, but I couldn't help but utterly adore Vaughn. He's much more animalistic than the other men so he always had more of a wild, feral edge to him than anyone else and that appealed to me more than Lucas ever did. Vaughn was exceptionally possessive and protective and, really, how could you not love the guy? Like with the world-building, I love how Singh continues to make me love her characters by showing me different facets of them all the time.

I have to say again how glad I am that I jumped on this bandwagon. I can't believe I've been so resistant for so long. This series is quickly becoming a favorite and I feel the distinct urge to run out to the store and buy all the books. Too bad it's 2:00 in the morning and I don't have the money for it. Unsure of what to do and who to turn to as the shields she uses to protect herself start to crack and emotions trickle into her, she goes to the only Psy that has ever broke from the PstNet, Sascha Duncan.

What another great book! This book gripped from the start. I really liked Faith, she was brave and strong facing the worst aspect of emotions when she has never felt emotion before. And Vaughn well he was just hot. All possesive, growly and very tactile. There was something darker about Vaughn then there was about Lucas (the hero from teh first book) but that only added to his appeal, especially when has acted tenderly towards Faith.

On the heat scale of this book, this was alot hotter then the first book. The build up of heat and intensity between Faith and Vaughn was just as good as when they actually got down and dirty! I have discovered that Nalini Singh is a master at building up sexual chemistry. When Vaughn was imagining when he wanted to do to Faith, I swear I was a puddle on the floor!

But aside from the romance, I liked the way Singh has developed the over arching plot about the Silence protocol and the NetMind. This book shows you more of how Psy society works and reveals just how atrocious the Council really is. I really can't wait to see what happens and I am reading these just as much to see how they defeat Silence as to see the next romance.

If you haven't read thses yet I higly recommend starting them, they just get better. (less)

I am happy that I enjoyed the second book in the Psy-Changeling series; I was having some doubts after the first one where it took some time to really get into the story. I was in love in love from the moment the very sexy Sentinel named Vaughn mentioned his first words in the book.

Quick rundown, the Psy are a mind race, they feel no emotion and they strive to be perfect or should I say they claim to be perfect. They say cus without feelings there would be no murders, no jealousy and all those other human emotions that causes destruction (Pfffft). The Changelings are shifters, who are all about emotions and getting physical, so lets say these very two races are about to get up close and personal.

Faith Nightstar is the money-maker Psy, her visions are worth millions if not billions and they are milking her dry. She also has been having crazy violent dreams, and feels she is slowly going insane. What the Psy race does to defects is to rehabilitate or casually get rid of them. A little adventure to find a Psy woman who left the race behind leads her into Changeling territory, and the arms of a dangerous sentinel.

Vaughn aka (I am so sexy I will make your panty drop) is an angry and dark soul. He is deadly and stealth like the Jaguar that he is, and he is dangerous. He lives to protect his alpha and his mate that is until his own mate makes an appearance in the form of Faith (frigid) Nightstar. Vaughn will have to fight to get his woman, and convince her he has the stuff to keep her safe.

Well the story pretty much becomes the Faith and Vaughn show, with a murder mystery as the side dish. I am just in love with the Changelings and there touch privileges. Vaughn (sigh) is more animal than man, and that my friends is winner in my book. While reading I was thinking how fast I could lose my clothes if he snuck through my sun roof (really I don’t have a sun roof but am willing to cut a hole in my ceiling). I would go from 0 to 60 in like a second just like a Jaguar (hear me roar/growl).

Nalini is building a pretty intriguing world and I am looking forward to all the other Psy-Changeling adventures. Also excited for the Psy man, because guess what dude you can’t hide feelings when you sporting a boner.

Although conscious of the fact that I am just barely skimming the surface of this deeply layered world--I am simply mesmerized. Sighn's ability to create multi-faceted, fleshed out characters, for me, rivals that of Goodkind. My most treasured reading experiences are the books with which the characterization drives the storyarc forward--not the location, or technology.

In regards to this authors aforementioned talent...Vaughn D'Angelo is just devine I must say. I loved the constant tension, and sense of danger whenever he was present. The epitome of all that is wild, and untamed--he could have gone either way; good, or evil. Yet despite the violence of his childhood, the Dark River pack was able to see, what we readers understand. Looking past the tortured jaguar so many years ago, to reach the honorable, innately good soul within the raging beast. This stoic sentinel's unfallible loyalty was tangible. Nothing could ever sway him in his devotion to Pack, or to his mate.

Equally, I loved Faith Nightstar. The innocence of her exploration of the "living" world, and of LIFE. The tentative trust with which she woke up from her lonely, cold existence--into the blazing warmth of her mate. The goodness, and light, of her soul, as well as her calming effect on her "cat". The connection between this couple, was immeasureable, and emotionally profound.

Although romantic, the style of this author does not read like a romance. Yes there is sex, but this intimacy is ruled by the emotion of the characters. This is not an author who writes sex because she is classified in the "romance" genre. These are characters who have witnessed evil, and tragedy first hand, and of whom have suffered horribly. The intimate scenes are brimming with emotion, and pure feeling. Built upon utter need, and survival. A reader can sense the air of life or death for these males.

In addition, I was fascinated by the concept of the sentient Netmind. The contrast of the Darkmind. The glimpses of the staggering psychic ability, and nature of secondary (soon to be main) characters. The subtle hints to an upcoming rebellion of Epic proportions. Nalini Signh's transition from one book to the next is as flawless as her introduction to this series. I anxiously await more clarity, and understanding of this vivid, wholly original work of literature(less)

And you do get more with every book so the series only keeps getting better ad better.The reason for why I couldn't love this book as much as the first was that it had a slower pace than the first. It took Faith and Vaughn forever to actually get together. Faith was also a much delicate and fragile heroine than Sascha, and I prefer my heroines witty and strong. While Psy are not my type of heroine, I do love them because they do get to become bad ass at the end and it counts much more on them because it's so much harder because of what they are. The fact that they can change makes them better heroines than most out there. Vaughn was an amazing hero too, I loved his chauvinist and possessive character, I really did, there must be something wrong with me but those are the heroes I like the most. I did prefer Lucas though, there's just no way to compete with an Alpha, Sigh. Maybe I couldn't enjoyed this book as much as I did the first time I read it because I kept comparing it to book 1,LOL, I should have read them with more time in between.

Vaughn and Faith made an amazing couple and once they got together the chemistry was just too good, I couldn't get enough of them. It may have taken Faith a bit too much time to work things out but once she did the book got way above 5 star rating. If it had started that good it would definitely be a better read. I just missed reading more about the mating bond and the wolves, which were almost no present at all in this instalment.(less)

It´s great how the author manages to continue the background story and builds the Psy world at the same time she develops the story of two new characters.

I think there was more drama for me reading this book than there was in the story! About a day into reading this book, one of my most precious canines decided to eat the last few chapters...so I started reading one copy and finished reading another! LOL

While Vaughn did not disappoint in his "alpha male" ways, Visions of Heat landed somewhere between 3.5 and 4 stars. Went a head and gave it 4 because I'm trying to be less stingy when handing out stars. ;)

That is, until she meets Vaughn, a changeling who makes it his mission to introduce Faith to all the sensations she's been deprived of.

Lovers of paranormal romance and urban fantasy are sure to be impressed by Singh's power to create a compelling novel that puts you on the edge of your seat from page 1. This book was wrought with all kinds of tension and anticipation - sexual and otherwise - to propel the reader quickly and satisfyingly through its pages.

You'll learn beautiful and surprising things about the Net Mind and the Psy Council. You'll wonder how the Psy-Changeling story will ultimately end. Will there be an all-out war? Will the Psy be liberated from Silence? The best part of these books is that you don't just care about the main characters, you are drawn so far into the story that you actually care deeply about the fate of the very world they live in. What an amazing storyteller!

I can say with confidence that because of this series, Nalini Singh is one of my favourite authors. Classifying Twilight as YA, I don't think I've read a paranormal romance that rivals this series.

Five stars all the way and a definite potential re-read.

'So I could be mated to someone who could choose not to be my mate?' A nightmare idea. Mating was a one-shot deal. The link usually involved a conscious decision at some point by the female, which made Vaughn and Faith's link very unusual. But no matter how it had come into being, once made, even death couldn't break it. No one mated twice. They might find a lover but the hole in them would never be fixed. Never. "I need to run."

But though he ran himself to exhaustion, his beast could find no comfort in an act that had always before meant freedom. Because he was chained, tied on the deepest level to a woman who just might destroy him.

The strangest thing about liking this book so much is that neither Faith nor Vaughn are the type of characters that I normally enjoy reading about. They are both strong, but isolated.

Vaughn is a jaguar living among leopards. His past isn't very pretty and he is more animal than man. Vaughn and Faith aren't my favorite Psy/Changeling Couple. While Faith is a very interesting character, both because of her mental ability to foresee future events, as the fact that sh's a very powerful Psy statuswise - the story itself never reaches its full potential.

Vaughn is supposed to be this wild animal, but I don't get the same feeling with him as for example with Hawk, who also lives with his animal close to the surface.

Visions of Heat matches up an F-Psy (foresight = sees the future) with a Changeling hero. This is another great addition to one of my favorite PNR series. Great character development, fast paced engrossing storyline, excellent world building, and good romance. I love how the author develops story arcs that cross books in the series (especially as the series goes on).

Singh's Psy-Changeling series is quite possibly the best paranormal/romance out there right now. With two in the series and one on the way (Caressed by Ice), it's fresh with an exciting futuristic world that little others have touched on. A world of the Extra Sensory Perception and Changlings (otherwise known as the "Were"), so incorporated into normal life, it has it's own set of rules to govern it.

In Visions of Heat, we have an off the scale Future Seeing Psy named Faith who can predict the future with amazing accuracy. A member of the Psy race, she's not supposed to feel- emotions have been shut down under the cloak of the Silence- but when she starts having visions of death she can't help but feel the suffering about to come down . In anguish not only from the visions but also for fear of her mental stability she decides to take control.

Before the governing council of the Psy shut her down- permanently- she leaves her secluded compound to seek out Sascha Duncan- a female member of the Psy race who dropped out of the PsyNet (Whose story is in Slave to Sensation), something unheard of up until now. Sascha is now part of the Changlings, mated with a wereleopard and alpha to the DarkRiver pack.

Before she finds Sascha, Faith meets Vaughn, a steely Werepanther from Sascha's pack, who begins to make her feel other things that at first is difficult for her to process. He leads her to Sascha and it doesn't take them long to discover a new menace is on the scene- one created from the same sickness that has infiltrated the PsyNet that created the menacing serial killer that once hunted the changlings in Slave to Sensation.

As they get closer to the new menace, Vaughn and Faith find themselves becoming closer as well. When Faith is finally able to realize that the people she trusted all her life are not quite what they seem, she makes a final break that brings her into a new world she never imagined possible.

Full of action and steamy sensuality, Visions of Heat is a page turner that grabs you and doesn't let go until the end.

VOH also gives more explanation into Singh's world so be sure you don't miss this one if you're starting this series. (less)

I really, really wanted to love this book because I adored the first book in the series, Slave to Sensation. Sadly, this one fell short of the high bar that Singh set for herself in book one.

The second book in the Psy Changeling series tells the story of Vaughn, Lucas’s jaguar friend and Faith Nightstar, a Psy woman whose talent to predict economic trends makes her a valuable asset in the Psy World.

Two things disappointed me in this story and I’m going to address them right away so I can get to the good parts later. Since we have 3 races/species/whatever in the series I was hoping Singh would go for a couple other than Psy and jaguar/leopard (I want wolves!) and then I thought this story lacked the tension of the first book when Lucas and Sasha were getting to know each other.

Having said that, I rather liked Vaughn and Faith’s story. What brings them together is that Faith wants to meet with Sasha to try to understand what’s going on with her abilities. She started having visions of the future and when she “sees” her sister being murdered, she feels it is too much and she wants to understand what she is. Since she can’t bring this to the attention of other Psy’s without risking being considered weak and eventually insane she decides to go to Sasha.

Vaughn finds her entering Dark River territory and although at first they are all very protective of Sasha eventually the two women talk under the surveillance of both Lucas and Vaughn. Vaughn is attracted to Faith from the beginning and realises pretty soon that she is his mate; however Faith has been deprived of human touch since she was a child and can’t deal with the strong emotions that touching Vaughn makes her feel. Faith doesn’t have as big as a shock as Sasha did when realising the Psy world is not as she thought but it is a painful process to lower her shields and allow Vaughn inside. In fact she seems to accept better the world without emotion she lives in and does question whether she should leave it or not whereas for Sasha staying was never an option after she found out what she was. I quite enjoyed the fact that Vaughn seemed to be totally besotted at times and unsure of Faith’s feelings and resistance. But that he kept pushing her not only to bring her to him but to make her whole. Although I think Singh did a wonderful job here of making the world she started building in STS even more solid I think the main thing is still the characters and their feelings.

We have more information about the Psy world, the different types of Psy’s and of how the Silence affected their abilities and eventually their lives.. We know more about the Council and what their plans are. Singh continues here the work of world building that she started in STS. We also start to see that not all Psy’s who want to remain Psy are equal and I was quite curious about Faith’s father. I think that the Psy world may be about to suffer some changes.

I can’t wait to go back and read more about the Psy Changeling world!

I definitely liked this book better than the first Psy-Changeling novel. This was a much fuller story. I had the sense that the author had a plan as she wrote this installment.

Whereas the first novel's protagonist, Sascha, lived on the fringes of her community as a "defective" Psy, Faith is a highly valued and carefully...more I definitely liked this book better than the first Psy-Changeling novel. Whereas the first novel's protagonist, Sascha, lived on the fringes of her community as a "defective" Psy, Faith is a highly valued and carefully protected F-Psy (a foreseer), a cornerstone of the Psy's world. Her problems affect everyone.

In this book, we learn more about the ruling Psy Council, the Psy's history, the Net and of course, about the advantages that make the ruthless Psy a formidable power, where before we were offered only vague, unformed notions. Perhaps what makes this much development possible is the science, or rather science fiction, which grounds the novel. Singh bases a lot of her world on technology that actually exists (and a lot that doesn't). For example, the Net that connects the minds of the Psy is very reminiscent of our internet, if we could access it through the convenience of our own minds, LOL. Take that, Verizon™.

It's details like these that really make the tale richer. It's easy to envision the world Singh crafts. I have to respect an author that takes such care to research and shape her characters' society. It's clear when an author's put forth that effort. It was chilling to read about the cutthroat Psys, where children are planned and produced, where a father constantly watches his child, ready to coldly betray her to a tyrannical government if she betrays any sign of a conscience (see Equilibrium). Government in a romance novel-- unheard of, LOL. All the manipulation and propaganda and sci (I think a character at one point even mentions "doubletalk")-- loved it. Singh must be well-read.

Since Faith is important to the government and the governing Councillors are kind of the -brilliant and brutal- villains in the book, the conflict's on a broader scale and, to my mind, much more bold and epic. Faith is powerful and she has perhaps as many reasons to fall in line with the government as to fight them. That's another interesting conflict. She's not just a working Jane who finds she has certain gifts and then stumbles on a killer. She's trying to move societies, stir rebellion-- and set us up for sequels, LOL. And for once, a foreseeing character has no qualms about using her gift for profit-- she profits and then some. In fact, in Singh's world, forecasts are not only a matter of course. They're business and very clinical too.

However, lest you think I'm describing a scifi book, let me tell you about the other side of the coin: the changelings, werecats who are decidedly of this world. Singh does take some liberties with cat dynamics and behavior, but they're still recognizable, climbing and all. Vaughn is more animal than most, even his changeling fellows, and it was certainly interesting to read about a man who is never quite human. That comes across very well, when Singh writes that "an animal looked out through his eyes," but while Vaughn is as possessive and fierce as you'd imagine (whew), he's no Caveman. He's an intelligent fella and sometimes he understands Faith's people better than she does. His advice to her is invaluable and he patiently pushes Faith to step outside her bounds. His perspective seemed much more present in this book than Lucas was in the first. I would have liked to have learned more about his character, but there was action to plot and a world to build.

There was much more romance in this book than the first. Faith's relationship with Vaughn and her progress as she breaks her binds is the central focus of the book, but there is a suspense subplot, a murderer on the loose.

All in all, Visions was like a paranormal romance wrapped in 1984 goodness, which was pretty much a match made for me, LOL. When a novel's grounded in years of literature and science and ideas, it tends to be a Good Read. Now I have to read the other books involving yummy secondary characters Singh not-so-subtly hinted at in Faith's "visions." If you're a fan of alphas, romance, shifters and scifi, I recommend giving this a try.(less)

Faith Nightstar is the most powerful F-Psy living. She lives a very protected life with monitors and handlers and Medical-Psys making sure she eats and sleeps. Her forecasts are never wrong and she is worth billions to her powerful Nightstar clan and their widespread business ventures.

But like Sascha in the previous book, Slave to Sensation,Faith begins to see things that no Psy under Silence by rights should be seeing. She begins to have visions of murder, death and sick perverted rage. She begins to feel. Faith is no dummy. She understands that something is trying to breach Silence and she decides to get information from the one source that might be helpful to her: Sascha Duncan -- the one Psy that escaped the PsyNet.

Vaughan D'Angelo is a Jaguar changeling of the DarkRiver pack. He is a tough, loyal Sentinel, a soldier, blood bound to his Alpha, Lucas Hunter. Vaughan witnesses Faith's foray into DarkRiver territory and escorts her to meet Sascha and Lucas. AS Faith begins to learn more about the secrets that the Psy Council is hiding from the rest of the Psy courtesy of Sascha and the changelings, she and Vaughn grow closer together. And Faith, powerful, cloistered, protected Faith, has a hard decision to make.

This is yet another hit for Nalini Singh. I just gobble these books down. She has created such a unique world with such a neat back-drop and such a fascinating cast of continuing characters. Like another of my favorite authors, Lynn Viehl, Nalini Singh manages to pack so much story, plot and character into a a single book it is amazing. This is only the second book of the series and I already feel like I know so much about these people and their world. And the cool thing is, she manages to do it in just the simple course of telling the story, There are no data dumps, no long drawn out expositions... just letting the story happen and letting the characterizations shine through. And also like LV, she does a great job of laying the foundation in earlier books for stuff that will pay off later on. There isn't a single false note, there isn't one boring romance or fantasy cliche. Everything just...clicks.

I read all the books back-to-back and got a real sense of disorientation when I tried to get into another book. I wanted more of her world.

I also ought to mention that I really appreciate that her cast is very multicultural. It makes sense for the way she has set up her world, especially with the way the Psy breed for psychic ability more than anything else. One of my pet peeves in urban fantasy especially set in large metro cities, and even sometimes in the future, is that they will not feature even the littlest bit of color. (less)

Pretty good. It may have been better than the first of the series, but I think I enjoyed it less because I had higher expectations. Faith, the most powerful F-Psy (foresight) alive, seeks out Sascha when she starts having unusual, violent visions. Vaughn, one of Lucas' Sentinels, is immediately drawn to her. As in the first, a Psy serial killer is hunting down women, but this plot is kept in the background. Most of the focus is on Faith overcoming her conditioning and Vaughn stalking her.

Ce second tome est tout aussi bon que le premier. L'auteure a su apporter une petite touche de nouveauté dans son univers, même si le fond reste toujours un peu identique : une romance entre une Psi et un Changeling. La narration alternée est un bon choix car elle nous permet d'être tantôt dans la peau de Vaughn, tantôt dans celle de Faith. On connaît ainsi leurs sentiments, leurs impressions.

La romance est adorable, un peu animale, et grandit au fil des pages. En fait, Faith et Vaughn sont très différents, mais ils sont complémentaires.
Faith évolue dans un univers très solitaire depuis qu'elle est toute petite. Enfermée dans sa prison dorée, elle ne fréquente que des médecins qui sont là pour s'assurer qu'elle ne se laisse pas engloutir par ses visions. Faith est donc vierge de tout contact : elle ne fréquente pas les Psi, ni les Humains ou les Changeling. Le monde extérieur lui est totalement étranger. Sa rencontre avec Vaughn va tout bouleverser.
En partie à cause de son passé, la bête de Vaughn, le jaguar, prend une grande place dans sa personnalité. Il a un peu de mal avec son côté humain. Il est donc un homme très tactile, et son côté sauvage, animal, est très présent et prend souvent le dessus.

J'ai également adoré retrouver les personnages du premier tome, Lucas et Sascha. Ils ne passent pas aux oubliettes et font vraiment partie de l'histoire (contrairement à pas mal de romances paranormales qui changent de personnages principaux à chaque tome).
Dans ce second tome, on en apprend également plus sur les fonctionnement des Psi, de leur Conseil et on sent que le vent va bientôt tourner pour eux. Leur protocole Silence commence à montrer ses faiblesses.(less)
