Although I had to wait a while to read this book - put it on hold over a month ago at my local library - it was worth the wait.

This is a collection of Wooden's sayings and famous quotes. That might seem haphazard as a book concept, but there are so many common themes that they really work together as a seamless whole. Peppered throughout the book are examples from life experiences, such as the description of Walton's whiskers. And the pyramid of success section. His opinion on su...more

Hard to argue with Wooden and his 10 NCAA titles. Beyond much of the typical "to thine own self be true" fuzz, the practical philosophy that made this man a winning machine comes out, and it turns out it was because he didn't care about winning. He wanted preparation, preparation, and more preparation in order to give maximum effort, to fulfill every last ounce of potential. Down to the way the boys put their socks on. To maintain this sort of detail consistently and not be tyrant or m...more

Many people know about the famous UCLA basketball coach John Wooden. There is also Many people who do not know about why John Wooden had such great success. The book by John Wooden and Steve Jamison called,”Wooden: A lifetime of observations and reflections on and of the court” is about how John Wooden has achieved success, peace of mind, and wisdom throughout his life. The prologue of the book so to speak consisted of praising of by many different people towards Coach Wooden and his teachings. ...more

This book is very positive. it shows you and tells you how to carry you life in a very positive perspective. To be very truthful i couldn't take my eyes off it. i stop to think the things i have been doing in my life and one thing they talked about was honesty and i havent done that with my parents to offten because i dont know how. but this book is really positive. it motivates you to do better, be better, and treat people better as well as your self.Wooden also talks about love , relationships,...more

Coach Wooden was not only the greatest college basketball coach of all time, he was a builder of character. His players attributed much of their success in later life to the Coach's wisdom and guiding hand. I review his "Pyramid of Success" with my management students. It is a fine book for anyone, especially for high school students, and beyond, as they begin their lives. After over thirty-five years of college teaching, it is my belief that learning and success in life are not possib...more

The whole book could be expressed in one single quote; "Success is peace of mind which is a direct result of self-satisfaction in knowing you did your best to become the best you are capable of becoming." John Wooden was a man from a home where the greatest accomplishment would be getting a college degree. His primary goal as a kid was to make himself happy which meant excelling in school and giving it everything he had until his last day as a student at Purdue University. The lessons ...more

After reading the book Wooden by John Wooden with Steve Jamison I have been able to take a lot of new helpful information away from what John Wooden has provided his readers. Wooden is a very inspirational man who has knowledge of not just basketball, but life in general. In this piece he provides you with information that will keep you level headed and how to keep an optimistic outlook on life. This book consists of many short pieces put together that relate to the real world and tips to hel...more

Just amazing. It's organized by themes, not chronologically- and it is not a memoir, yet when I got to the part when he told his team he had decided to retire, I cried. I've been using his Pyramid of Success for almost 10 years now as a coach, but I still found new insights and different ways of understanding what he teaches in it. Excellent book, up there with '7 Habits' by Covey, 'Everything I Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten' by Fulghum, and POSSIBLY even 'Man's Search for Meaning' by F...more

Special review love for Cullen, who lent me this book.
Special review love for John Wooden, who makes me glad that people like him exist. Seriously, this guy had a lifetime win percentage of something like .800, won ten national championships, and ANNOUNCED HIS RETIREMENT THE WEEK BEFORE HIS LAST CHAMPIONSHIP GAME. Wow.
Also, his book reads almost like the Proverbs. Just very cool, very inspiring stuff. He quotes Wordsworth and Emerson too. Plus, you can probably finish the book in a...more

"You can never influence the other person's preparation but you can influence yours". "the journey is better than the inn". "make the best out of your situation". if you need a book on how to create a structure in self development or team leadership then this is a good book to consult. Best coaching book I've ever read."giving your best is more important than winning in the game of life". Take sometime out and read this coaching classic.

A simple yet amazingly insightful guide to life. And sports too. Comparing it to other inspirational books, this book is the best I've read because it actually explains and gives examples of how to embrace the principles of success. It truly defines 'hard work', 'positive attitude', 'leadership', 'humbleness' etc. It's not just a glossy motivational book, it's about the principles that success and happiness are built on.
Mr.
Wooden gets better with every re-read.

So many things to quote, but here is what stuck out the most this time:

"For fourteen years we worked very hard and didn't win a national championship. However, a national championship WAS won in the fifteenth year. Another in the sixteenth. And eight more in the following ten years.

Be persistent. Be determined. Be tenacious. Be completely determined to reach your goal."

Amen!

I am not a huge sports fan but this legendary UCLA basketball coach has written the Grandpa manual. Personal responsibility, decency and character. We are fast forgetting the generation of hats will removed for meals, doors will be held open and men will rise when a lady enters or exits a room. Fathers, read this and apply it so your sons can be gentlemen and your girls will recognize one.

In a time when winning teams tend to be a collection of criminals and prima donna's, it's refreshing to read a book about a champion both "on and off the court." In this novel Wooden shares memories from his days at UCLA as well as general thoughts on life outside of basketball. This one will stay in my library forever and be read repeatedly. Thank you John Wooden.

Incredibly down-to-earth advice in the form of quotations by John Wooden, and his collection of quotes, poems, comments by others. Applicable to life, in general. One of my favorites: " Do not permit what you cannot do to interfere with what you can do." Well worth reading, I found it inspirational and entertaining.

I really enjoyed the book “Wooden”. It is a must read for any college basketball fan out there. However it is a lot more than just a book about basketball. You go into the life of the legendary UCLA coach John Wooden. You see his perspective on life and many other topics. He talks about what makes someone successful and gives many interesting points to think about. This book defiantly makes you look back and reflect on your own life. He teaches the readers about life lessons and what to do in to...more

My high school basketball coach insisted that I read this and I was not disappointed. Not only was he a legendary coach, but he was an all-around wonderful human being who instilled values and morals in his players. Short little messages of inspiration is this little nugget!

This book taught me many things about my life and how i want to live my life in the future. Jamison Wooden showed me many valuable life lessons through all of his experiences he wrote in this book. He showed me that if you want something bad enough that you can not let anything get in your way when trying to achieve your goals. Mr. Wooden also taught me that when it comes to sports and the lives of athletes; that there will be many peaks and valleys of your emotions but the key is to stay ...more

Reminded me of "The Last Lecture". Had some good parts, although it did start to seem a bit repetitive by the end. You certainly have to admire him for being more interested in helping his players be the best people they could be, rather than just his own agenda.

If you're a fan of basketball, play basketball, or are a father or mother, son or daughter, John Wooden gives his advice to everybody. Most people will think that this book is only about basketball, not at all. If you're looking for answers for any kind of problem you are facing, I'm sure John Wooden will have some affect on you.

This book has made me a better person and a better basketball player. It has taught me that I can learn from experience, not things that I can learn before-h...more

I found this book to be very interesting. It held a lot of very good information and life stories of John Wooden. He tells all about his coaching career at UCLA and how he got there and how he became successful. He preaches that preparation is the key to success and the more determined you are as a person, the more you can achieve.
This book also had a great writing style. The language he uses in this book is very easy to follow and it helps you get a feeling of emotion in e very s...more

I liked this book. I would have given it more stars if it wasn't so much like a book of quotes.
John Wooden has great work ethic and other characteristics and views on life that I also want to embody and teach to my children.

This book was a rather odd read for me. Its more of a collection of ideas than an actual story. It is most about not john woodens success or achievements on the court, but as a person. This book is a tale of what john wooden believes is the way to live ur life to 110%. He believes as long as you are all you can be you have lived a successful and meaning full life.
I did not like this book however it was uninteresting to me. I found it hard to read at times because there was no story it was ...more

John Wooden's message of personal responsibility always inspires me to be a better person. Someone once told me that part of being a good teacher is being able to break an idea down to its simplest form and explain it to anybody. John Wooden was a master at this, which is why he was such a successful coach, teacher, and writer.

Words of wisdom from a truly inspiration man of integrity.
Old-fashioned? Yes. Still relevant? Absolutely. Life-changing? I certainly hope so. Ask me in ten years.

I learned so much from this book. How to live life and to be the best person you can possibly be. I read it at a time in my life when advice never seemed to make sense.

This book changed my life. It's not about basketball, it's about life. It teaches you how to be optimistic and how to keep your morals.... This big is the best.....
