This is by far the most inspirational book I have ever read. This book is written by arguably the greatest basketball coach of all time, John Wooden. Wooden talks about teachings he would give to every single person he would meet in life. each step is its own chapter. at the end of each step there would be an assignment, such as a bible reading or something you need to think about in order for you to further your self as a person. This book gives the definition of success in a way no one ever ha ...more

I really liked Coach Wooden's buzz words for character building, as they allowed me to think more deeply about the type of character I would like to build in my life. His additions to this book were pretty fantastic, if a bit short and ambiguous at times. I really didn't care for Mr. Carty's bits much. I did not pick this book up expecting it to be a bible-study type of book, and Mr. Carty Does his best to make it just that. I don't think that I am his ideal audience, but that was the disappoint ...more

This is an overview of John Wooden's philosophy on what it means to be a success in life. (John Wooden received great acclaim for being one of the best college coaches ever with an overall winning percentage over .800!) In Coach Wooden's paradigm, "success" can be broken down into building blocks that make up a pyramid. In this this volume, Coach Wooden goes through a description of each building block, and then Jay Carty follows with a bible devotional on each block. For the most part, I skippe ...more

Coach Wooden does a great job in communicating what he has learned as a coach and provides 15 building blocks and 9 mortas qualities that can help each one of us be much better than yesterday. Coach Wooden's advice is NOT a quick fix or new age psychology. Coach Wooden's pyramid of success is grounded by fundamentals, patterns he observed as a coach, experience and his spirituality. He does a remarkable job in using narratives from the bible. I re-read the pyramid of success to help me work hard ...more

Difference making book

This is a book you can read once and learn things to change your life. This also a book that you can read multiple times along with all the companion biblical references and truly change your life.

I love reading and learning about John Wooden. This book caused me to really get in to the Word of God. It related the bible to each topic in Coach Wooden's Pyramid of Success. I suggest that anyone who wants to be successful should read this book... Your definition of success may just change.

This book illustrates the steps to success and all the drama and hardships that can come from it. Wooden, one of the most well known college coach uses Christian values to reinforce his "blocks" in the pyramid to success. In the beginning of this book, Wooden basically describes how he started working towards success in the first few building blocks including industriousness and enthusiasm. Wooden does a fantastic job of capturing the readers attention and inspiring them by revealing his own fla ...more

Coach Wooden was an amazing leader with incredible values. He explains them in a very clear and open way so that anyone could follow and implement them. This book, I feel, suffers from the addition of the biblical parallels add in each section. They muddy up the Coach's clear and excellent explanations. I understand Christian Audio's desire to have "Christian" content but I don't know why that means reading and preaching from biblical texts and stories. All of Wooden's values were inspired by hi ...more

Shelves: library, audiobook
Because it is a devotional with lists of bible readings and reflection questions it doesn't make the transition to audiobook that well. The content is pretty good nonetheless.

It has many "old school" ideas for success and is backed by faith and biblical references. This was a refreshing read and I would read it again.

The book Wooden is about the reflection on a coach who grew up having nothing to being a college coach for UCLA then going off to be an NBA coach. This book is based on real life events with a little drama in it. The coach is the main character telling the reader about his life and how he has become what he is today. I also like how the author talks about the things you should follow by in order to become successfull in life. He gave great tips and some good advise doing the book.

I would suggest

The best.

This book is really great for anyone, not just those involved in athletics. John Wooden was a Coach for years and changed so many lives with his words and his wisdom. The lessons and advice he offers in this book are really great and can be applied to athletics or in life. His words help you become mentally stronger and stronger as a person in general. HIs pyramid is used by people in all kinds of situations...education, sports, leadership, workplace, and so much more.

This book is good for athletes and coachs. It tells about what you need to be a good teammate but also how to be on a team. Like encouragement, integrity, cooperation, conditioning, poise, ambition, and much more. I like this book because I can learn how to be a good teammate but also how to be a good person as well.

Wooden's concept of building a pyramid AND discussing the glue that binds them is not uncommon. The practicality, examples, and correlative discussions and example from the Bible make this one better than most. Very enjoyable - A book that will stay on the desk for frequent review.

Loved all the insights from John Wooden! He is definitely one of my most admired human beings. However, I didn't particularly like the format of the book. I still got a lot out of it and enjoyed it.

While a good read, it's 40% Wooden and 60% Bible study and devotional. I will seek out other titles about Coach Wooden- this book has a different goal than I do.
