This is good for a general history of Japanese street fashion from the 1970s to now (or rather, about 2007), so it helped add to my knowledge & understanding of Japanese culture. It's not written by anyone Japanese. In fact the writing is pretty dumbed down (I guess because it's for teenagers) and usually editorialized in a subtle but surprisingly demeaning and negative way toward the fashions and the girls who lived the lifestyles discussed. Hilarious! I loved learning about the various fashion styles of Japanese teens...has a sociological and anthropological perspective to it.

For those fascinated by Japanese pop culture, this is a fun look at teen fashion in Tokyo over the years. As a fan of the movie "Kamikaze Girls" it was interesting to see references to both styles of the main characters in the movie, as well as information about the store Momoko, the main character, loves so much "Baby, the Stars Shine Bright." There's also a fun guide in the back to help you determine your style.
