Baby Owl is just out in the snowy woods, playing with his sled... so why does Baby Hare insist on mistaking him for Santa? Is Santa the only one allowed to wear a red hat? And doesn't Baby Hare know the difference between a sled and a sleigh?
It'll take no less than a surprise visit from the jolly old man himself to settle this case of mistaken identity!

Allen, J. (2008). "I'm not Santa!" New York: Hyperion Books for Children.

Appetizer: On Christmas Eve, Baby Owl goes out sledding and Baby Hare mistakes the owl for Santa. No matter what Baby Owl says, the Hare is still convinced the owl is Santa.

This is a good holiday read. Author and illustrator Jonathan Allen does an excellent job of capturing a childlike voice for Baby Owl and Baby Hare. This voice goes beyond just vocabulary choices, but also applies to the undying faith in Sant...more

Allen, Jonathan, I’m NOT Santa!, 25 pgs. Hyperion Book CH ~Language G, Sexual Content~G Violence~G
Another WONDERFUL book from Allen starring the little owl who is NOT cute! This time Baby owl, donning a Santa hat, is approached by a baby hare who insists that he is Santa! The comparisons are hilarious and the text begs to be read aloud! A must add to library holiday collections.

Poor Baby Owl is mistaken for Santa by Baby Hare. Baby Hare sees his red hat, sled, and chubby exterior and assumes he's Santa. No matter how Baby Owl tries to convince him, Baby Hare is stuck on the idea and a bout of crying ensues. When Baby Owl tries to make him feel better, it just gets worse. Who will be able to stop all these tears?

This is in the category of so silly it's ridiculous (and therefore, gets a good laugh). Plus the Baby Owl is so cute!

N is for Not

This is very easy to read aloud to a large group. There is lots of drama. The book is large and the pictures are bright, simple, and clear. The characters are a baby owl and a baby hare. Since hare may be a new vocabulary word for many of the children I pointed to the picture and asked what they would call this. I heard bunny and rabbit. So throughout the story I said "baby bunny rabbit hare" and everyone was okay with that.

This is a cute story and I think I'd like it even more if it were actually anywhere close to the Christmas season (don't ask me why, but we got into the Children's Christmas section at the library and our girls wanted to read some of the books there), but we really liked the author's book, I'm Not Cute! much more than this one.

This is the sequel to the hilarious "I'm Not Cute!" However, "I'm Not Santa!" is one of the lamest childrens books ever and probably one of the worst this year. The idea isn't original (Baby Owl gets mistaken for Santa) and the text and drawings are dull. Skip this one, folks.

I think the author may have been shooting for humour, but, in my opinion, only achieved cute. Not quite what I expected. That's not even a chick on the cover! It's supposed to be a baby owl.
No comment therefore on the illustrations.

This is, hands down, my favorite Santa-themed picture book of all time! Baby Owl (wearing a red hat & dragging his sled) is mistaken for Santa by Baby Hare. Arguments and histrionic weeping ensue before the happy ending. This book has delightful, expressive illustrations and is terribly fun to read aloud dramatically to a group of children -- if you do it right, the crying & carrying on will send little ones into fits of giggles. There's even a one-page Baby Owl monologue that is very ch...more

The word "cute" always seems to pop up with this series. I often find that adults seem to find it cuter than the kids, but the kids will like this one too--they just won't necessarily adore it. How's that for faint praise?
Heidi
This owl is adorable in illustration. The story made me smile, but I don't think it is as good as the original. Children will laugh, but I don't think I would do well in reading it for a storytime. Maybe a lap-read.

owl is mistaken for santa until real santa shows up. cute dialogue and pictures. children may enjoy this as a readaloud around the holidays. big pictures will help with the presentation.

When Baby Owl and his owl teddy bear are out playing in the woods on Christmas Eve, he is mistaken for Santa Claus by Baby Hare. Luckily the real Santa appears to save the day.

My 3 year old son is in love with this book. We read in 5-6 times just in the first day. It's not super original, but super fun to read-aloud and entertaining for little kids.

Cute book with simple illustrations. Nicely captures both the stubbornness and then sudden fickleness of a child's mind.
Cristina
My only complaint is the very last couple of pages, such an anticlimactic ending. But overall, a great read-aloud.
Peacegal
Cute illustrations, but I can't say I was charmed by Hare's and Owl's annoying temper tantrums.
Robin Rousu
Cute, funny, reads aloud well. Great, short choice for a Christmas-themed preschool story time.
Inspired Kathy
Cute illustrations. I've had crazy conversations like this with my children.

This is one is adorable & funny! Great for a holiday bedtime story.

This is a comical secular Christmas book for younger kids.

I have been on an owl kick lately. I can see today's library haul or wait list (several of Jonathan Allen's books) is not going to make that "kick" go away any time soon.

Baby Owl is a cutey!

And I just love the way he talks ... especially near the end of the story when he's telling his mama about his adventures. Run-on sentences galore but they sound just like a breathless little kid telling a story.
Tamra
Cute. Not genius.

I probably would never recommend this book, but I also wouldn't mind reading it if it were sitting on the table.

(Once a month I read picture books to a 2nd grade class. This one made the cut.)
Katie
A hilarious new picture book with Owly! It's a little wordy for our toddler to sit through, but my husband and I keep reading it over and over. I think this book will HAVE to be under the tree on Christmas morning.
