One of the undiscovered gems of New Zealand poetry. Inklings is the first collection by renowned singer/songwriter Bill Direen released in 1988. A sense of isolation inhabits many of these poems, separateness from the seasons, cicadas, childhood, memory, all of which take on a curiously magical quality, a type of innocence or beauty that the author observes as an outsider:

Children’s concert

a pride of adults
obliged to endure it

this was peace
this world apart
