Maggie gets out of jail after spending twelve years there for the murder of her lover. She is so beaten down that she can barley function in her daily life. This is the main character of The Unforgiven. This was an okay book I figured out who was trying to kill Maggie pretty early in the story so spent most of the book wondering why no one else could not make the connection. The book was predictable and a little to long for it.
It is not a bad story otherwise.

Read in one day, not a complete waste of time but not credible either - insufficient exploration of the effect of prison on the recently-freed main character, and an unrealistically speedy love affair. But some pretty descriptions to make it all bearable. Despite the lack of depth I did find myself affected by the trials and tribulations of a new girl in a small town. Found for $1 and thought I might as well try it, but I would not go out of my way for this one.

This poor jail very young for a murder she didn't commit and after 12 years she tries to get bask the life the should be able to have. But there are some very twisted people in this worls that just won't cut her any slack! You will be a little spooked and a lot shocked 3/4 quarters of the way through this book as I was. Enjoy I know I did

This Edgar Award-nominated debut was well deserved. A suspenseful psychological thriller, with it's share of gruesome effects. For a thirty year old novel, debut or not by a young was one of those fast can't-put-down reads. I will be looking for some of her other novels.

I read this book over twenty years ago and I still vividly remember it. It was fact, I think it's time to read it again.
Every single character was incredibly unlikeable. Are all New Englanders this nasty?
I didn't care for anybody, really. And the plot was all given away too early in the book.

This thriller reminds me a bit of Laird Koenig's "The Little Girl who lives down the Lane".
Great atmosphere on an island close to the New England coast.
