I studied eighteenth literature at university and therefore I enjoyed reading this book. Chapter 2, 'Legislators Divided: The Attack Upon Luxury in the Eighteenth Century' contained a long quotation from Henry Mackenzie’s The Man of Feeling where a stranger explains to Harley the negative effects of luxury:
'Indeed, the education of your youth is every way preposterous ; you waste at school years in im- proving talents, without having ever spent an hour in discovering them ; one promiscuous line
