Interesting, thought provoking read. There are two perspectives to take when reading this book; the storyline perspective, and the metaphorical perspective. By the end of the book you need to have a good understanding of the undercurrents in the metaphorical perspective to get the ending, because the storyline ends rather abruptly. Basically it's about the growth of the two young people away from needing the destructive relationships that they are in. So, I guess it ends happily. I do wish howev...more

Not a horrible book, and I finished it, but not her most polished or well-crafted work. She’s really much better at description and world creation than this. This wasn’t as simplistic as some young adult novels are, but it got closer than I liked, particularly when I know that this particular author is capable of much, much better.

Y'know... this was a lovely story, I'm sure, but I just couldn't stick with it. I read the thing a month ago, but honestly, I can't tell you the first thing about it.
I remember being bored at times. I remember being confused about what was going on. And I remember it ending and just being like "Ok. Whatever."
So.... whatever.

As I read this book, I kept thinking that this was a re-telling of a classic fairy tale that I had heard before, except more richly detailed and adapted to modern times. Eventually, though, I realized that LeGuin is just a really good writer and was telling a totally new story in the style of other fairy tales. It was enthralling.

I never really got into the world of this book. It was a quick, absorbing enough read, but I didn't really care about the characters or the world, and the ending felt... unsatisfying. Definitely not Le Guin's best stuff -- though the writing, of course, is good.

recommends it for:
fantasy peeps, but not young kids
Sort of a cross of Bridge to Terabithia and His Dark Materials. Sort of. Without the religion. I guess. Quick enough read, perhaps too quick as the end really rushes without much development, but I enjoyed it well enough.

It was kind of an odd story and I didn't really get the point. But the characters were good.

I think I'm a little cheating with this one - I don't remember it all that well...

LeGuin's style is flawless, but this just isn't an interesting book.
