A sigh of relief!
Finally done with the increasingly punishing read. The climatic confrontation to retake the islands back from the invading Japanese was more anti-climatic than anything else. That's because this thing was on life support before that completing it was tantamount to assisted suicide, Doctor Kevorkian anyone?

This was my first book by Robert Conroy so I have nothing to judge him by from previous works, and from reading other's reviews, maybe that's a good thing. Focusing on Japan's invasion of Hawaii, the author gives us quite a few interesting characters to follow. I actually liked the characters and felt they stayed true to their creation. Although I thought the Japanese Navy's actions were a little too easily set up, it still made an interesting read. It does have quite a few graphic areas that de

If you like alternative history books, or just enjoy history and are looking for something different, this is one of my favorite alternative history books by my favorite alternative history author, or perhaps a tie with Newt Gingrich perhaps.
Alternative history books are all about changing one event in history slightly and seeing the potential ramifications of that change. Try this book and enjoy it. I certainly did.

Alternate history from one of the modern masters. While I enjoyed the characters in the story, the excessive violence had me turning away from this book more than once.

THAT was a fun read! One little tweak to History and how things change. I love the plausibility of it all. Definitely worth the time.

I loved the idea, but Conroy could have done a lot more with the story (character development, create more suspense/intrigue). Great premise but half-hearted effort.

I don't read a lot of historical fiction, but this was a pretty good book. The pages are full of action and suspense on what will happen next.
It's told from the view of several characters on both sides of the fight. This really puts the reader in the know of everything going on. Personally, I think it makes the book more enjoyable.

I found this book by accident, looking for a Pat Conroy memoir. It was an "alternate history" on what if the Japanese succeeded in their attack on Pearl Harbor, and occupied the Islands. Interesting, at first, and there were some good characters. Sadly it kept coming back to what it was, a war story. Reading about the atrocities was just too much for me.
