I don't know to which "genre" this short story belongs. I was tempted to label it "romance", but then I didn't. And why bother? It can belong to any genre, that doesn't make any difference. The crucial thing here is, I read it, and I liked it for no clear reason.

In fact, the story is too predictable, too short, too simple. The ending (the painter's talking to the readers) was awkward. Still, I liked it. It's funny that I didn't like the excerpt in our textbook back in secondary school. I was 14,

Beneath the politics and the propaganda, there lies a story which could be found relevant even today.

In places with war , poverty and discrimination , any child would be glad to have a "Duishen" who would bestow upon them the gift of Education against all odds. While reading , I thought about the girls in Afghanistan and Nigeria who are finding dire obstacles, in their quest for knowledge.
I spared a thought to the child brides in Yemen, who will not be rescued and sent to school. For each one of

This is the original Russian version of the world famous novel 'The First Teacher' (most of our Sinhala readers may know this novel as GURUGEETHAYA). I have only read the novel's Sinhala translation. And it is because that Goodreads does not offer an English or Sinhala translation the novel,I decided to add its Russian version. Hope this won't much confuse you......

I do not agree with the political philosophy of the book, but the brushstrokes of humanity that it uses to paint the picture in your mind is nothing short of phenomenal.

This story represents how a untold/hided human feelings can affect to the life. I think to get better understanding about human feelings like love we have to get isolated with those feelings. Then only we can understand what are they and how they going to touch our life.

Rodrigo is known to be a good translator, hence I don't think it was any shortcoming on his part, but I did not feel that this book was living up to its reputation.

This book really has a wonderful story inside, but the translation was not good as it seemed to be. After reading I thought it would be much better if the story was in a simpler text, plus it was too short :(
Yet I can't ignore this story, hope i will get a chance to read the original someday!!!
(or even the complete translation)

The book says, if there is any book on education and will make you weep, it is this. and I totally concur with it.Chingiz Aitmatov is truly an amazing author who has the prowess to portray simple subject into a heart wrenching one.
really I was moved when I was reading it.Amazing

Although the translation bordered between worst and er.. more-worst, the story and narration were both brilliant. Although we would never know what made Duishen do what he did, he is inspiring!! Duishen will remain in my memory!

If it weren't taken already, this might have become my favourite book. But since my teacher gave to me as "his favourite book", I feel like I need to find one of my own.
