The story of Wrath, the Chief.

Brother Darius asks the head of the Black Dagger Brotherhood, Wrath, to help his half-human daughter Beth through her transition. Wrath refuses, but when Darius dies in a car bomb Wrath decides to honor his brother’s last wish. Beth has been brought up in foster homes and knows nothing about either her parents or vampires. Wrath inducts Beth into the Vampire life while the lessers start kidnapping and torturing civilian vampires. Wrath and Beth fall in love. W...more

Wrath is the only purebred vampire left, king of their race, and the leader of the Black Dagger Brotherhood, an elite group of warriors dedicated to protecting their race from the lessers who would kill them. When one of the brothers asks Wrath to protect his half-human daughter, the king is quick to decline. The woman is 25, nearing the time of transition, and the last thing Wrath needs is another encumbrance. But when the warrior is killed, Wrath thinks it only fitting that he protect the daug...more

J. R. Ward was the author of the month at HRC recently. I wasn't too tempted to try it, I had heard it was a mix of vampires and erotica which are 2 things that don't really appeal to me. However many of my friends (you know who you are :-)) with whom I share many reading tastes nagged me till I gave in and yesterday I finally decided to pick it up.

At first I was a bit confused by all those terms she mentions at the beginning.I had to go back several times to see what was what. Then there we...more

So I read this book after seeing it on many recommended lists.

I liked it, I didn't love it.

Things I liked.

1. The world which these novels inhabit. You can tell a lot of thought and energy went into the world building here.

2. The actual Brotherhood and the easy banter of the Brothers. They felt like comrades, brother-in-arms.

3. Beth. For once I liked the female character more than the male protanginist. She was smart, capable and although she fell madly in love with no reason ...more

(This is sort of a review of the series as a whole, as I'm too lazy to review each individual book)

My first impression of this series was "Man, I liked this a lot better when Sherrilyn Kenyon wrote it and called them Dark-Hunters." The similarities are kind of funny, down to Zarek/Zsadist. Let's see, they're called "Z", they spent their "former" life as a slave, low self-esteem caused by disfigurement masked by viciousness, rocky relationship with a brother th...more

I'm a late comer to the sheer OMG hotness that is JR Ward. This is one SERIOUSLY sexy writer. Dark Lover is the first in the Black Dagger Brotherhood, which is a group of elite vampires who protect the rest of all the vampires from the Lessors. The Lessors are a group of soulless humans who eventually turn albino and smell like baby powder. (I mean, that is a cool characteristic! I've always thought baby powder had something subtly sinister ...more

Ahh...how do I go about describing the Black Dagger Brotherhood? This is the first book in a series of vampire romance novels. If vampires or romance just aren't your thing, then keep moving cuz these books will only appeal to people willing to "go with it". I picked this book up at the bookstore on a whim. It sounded interesting, so I was willing to give it a shot. I'm SO glad I did! The book, heck the whole series, is unlike anything I have ever read. So, okay....

Dark Lover is my first vampire romance. I had been warned that I'd probably not like the main male characters being dressed in black leather and indulging in rap-speak and rap music. I don't know how I ended up giving that impression but suffice to say I fell completely in love with the Black Dagger Brotherhood. The pacing was well-balanced between the action and romance and though I'd have preferred more on what happened to Beth's job, her personal life after her marriage to Wrath, I am glad I ...more

Okay, so it took me a while to get on the Black Dagger Brotherhood bandwagon. Some of y'all know that I went over 4 years without picking up a book, so when I started reading again in August, I was behind (and still am) with series books.
In all honesty, I put reading this book off because I thought I would expect too much from it. All of the hype about it leads you to believe that it is unfailingly awesome...well it was.
I loved both Wrath and Beth. In my opinion they couldn't have been ...more

I would give the series as a whole 5 stars for sheer addictiveness. I read Dark Lover about... two weeks ago? I have now read all five of the books (a couple of them twice) and am thinking about buying them so I can re-read them over and over to my heart's content.
But I won't lie to you. These are paranormal romance novels, and won't be winning any Pulitzers. These books certainly have their flaws, and I wouldn't recommend them to everyone. But if you're looking for a steamy way to kill a Sund...more

Dark Lover is the first book in the Black Dagger Brotherhood series. Wrath, the leader of the Black Dagger Brotherhood (a coterie of vampire warriors dedicated to protecting the civilian vampires) reluctantly shepards Beth,a woman utterly cluesless as to her half-vampire heritage through the rites
of passage that suddenly and dangerously overtake her. I know I lost most of you with that run on sentence <g> but....this series is FANTASTIC.

Beth Randall is 25 years old, works for the local newspaper and lives a completely ordinary life without much excitement. Or so she thinks. What she doesn´t know is that she´s only half-human. When the time of her transition from human to vampire nears her vampire-father Darius wants to help her and asks their king Wrath to protect her. First Wrath declines but after Darius is killed by the Lessers (the arch-enemies of the vampires) and Beth gets attacked on her way home after work he reconsid...more

I will review this as a series. I am conflicted on this series. My wife was raving about them and I love vampire books, so she had me start reading them. I have to admit that I like them. I do find flaws with them though. The writing to me is very polar. You either have a very dark, gritty, and violent section, and then you have a hyper-saccharine sweet love scene. Each book is centered mainly around one of the brotherhood. Herein lies another problem with me. The end of each book seems...more

I picked this book up originally just from reviewing the summary on the back; I had no previous knowledge of J.R. Ward and her work.

I can honestly say that this series is the series that I am most invested in (even more than Sherrilyn Kenyon's "Dark Hunter" series), and have never been invested in a series so much since my 12 year-old days of L.J. Smith's "Vampire Diaries".

J.R. Ward really gets to the heart of her characters, and there really are no books out there th...more

You know, I resisted the whole vampire/werewolf trend in romance. I thought the whole premise was just cheesy and bound to be bad.

I was wrong.

I'm sure there are bad paranormal romances out there, but I'm really enjoying the ones I've picked up, and of them all, JR Ward's Black Dagger Brotherhood series are fantastic.

Even while luring you into a universe where 600-year-old vampires can teleport at will (as long as the room isn't encased in steel), poof into bare traces of ash in the ...more

Dark Lover is the first in a series about a group of vampires called the Black Dagger Brotherhood. Unlike the "civilian" vampires, these six Brothers are huge men of scarred and cursed muscle. Led by Wrath, last in a long line of vampire kings who refuses to take the throne, the other Brothers are Torhment, Rhage, Phury, Zsadist and Vishous. There is also Dharius, but since he doesn't have a funky name it's hardly surprising that he gets blown up in the opening act. Before he is...more

the first in a new "paranormal romance" series (cuz apparently, i like my porn to involve fangs or werewolves) that's so far surprisingly good. my coworker who's been keeping me stocked in the supernatural crack that's been fueling a month-long book-bender has found a real winner in this new author. you can tell from the first book that there's some carefully considered world-building going on, and the plot is far more than mere filler between bedroom scenes.

This is the first novel of the Black Dagger Brotherhood Series. This is the story of Wrath - the last purebred vampire left on earth and King of his people. He is the essentially blind and leader of a band of six lethal warriors known as the Black Dagger Brotherhood. Together, these warriors hunt the Lessening Society - the souless vampire slayers who murdered Wrath's parents centuries ago.

Wrath is stunned when a fellow warrior - Darius - asks him to protect and guide Darius' halfbreed daugh...more
