I admit, this is not the literary accomplishment of the ages (thus the four stars), but it's near and dear to my heart. Last March (2007) I found a dog roaming outside around my house, and he had clearly been on the road for days. Long story short, I sent him to the pound, rescued him from the pound when no one came for him, nursed him back from a number of illnesses and diseases he had, and he lived in my garage for almost five months (my own dogs weren't exactly being nice to him, so the garag...more

How could I not love a book written by someone who has succumbed to the charm of pit bulls as much as I have. Some of the things he wrote with which I really identified were his friends who say they never see a stray animal, and how those people just aren't allowing themselves to see them; or that when you rescue an animal you do it despite not knowing how it will work out or what it's going to cost simply because you have no choice. I kept reading bits and pieces out loud to my husband -- I l...more

This was a very touching, heart-warming book. I think any animal lover has probably been in some of the same situations as Mr. Foster when it comes to finding dogs (or dogs finding us). You question if you can keep it yourself with the ones you already have or would it better with someone else. And if you do let them go, you worry if you did the right thing and how they are doing. I know I certainly have. I look forward to finding a copy of his next book. I'm hoping he picks up where he left ...more

I love books about dogs. They are usually funny and sad and definitely tug at the heartstrings (of anyone with a heart, that is). This book was no exception. It was the narrative of the author's journey from simple dog-owner to eventual dog-rescuer. It was also a collection of short stories of the dogs he encountered. Full of tales that will tickle the funny bone, and maybe bring a tear to your eye. The author also includes many helpful lists throughout the book, as well as information at ...more

Got the audio book. I was not thrilled with the individual who did the reading, but Ken's stories in the book were easy for me to relate to. He succinctly put into words some of the emotions involved when one is performing animal rescue, including the initial denial that an animal is meant to stay with you. Also, I think he does quite well at capturing the essence of just being one of those people who can't look away when you see an animal in need. It's a state of mind that only a certain type o...more

This is one of my faves:) Ken Foster, the author himself, tells of his first time rescuing a dog and how it led to a number of rescues. The stories are endearing, funny and truly heart warming.
Any animal lover should read this. I will say that when I first went to read it, I was leary because I didn't want to hear sad animal stories. However, he finds a home or shelter for all and for the most part this is full of happy endings. It also has a lot of good, informative information about pe...more

A true story of a man who found himself being a foster to dogs accidentally. He's lived all over the country as a teacher and his experiences with the shelters and the people who work there. This is a true account of his and his dogs lives but told in a way that you think that you're reading a fictional story. I really loved this book--I laughed and cried on the same page and I totally identified with this man and his quest to save every dog that he possibly could, regardless of the cost to h...more

I liked this book and learned some interesting things about dogs and the rescue system. I found the writer to be a little bitter, like maybe one of those people who likes dogs more than people. And I can sort of relate sometimes, but at the same time, it made the book a little preachy sometimes. I would still recommend it though. It was interesting and the guy did a great job of defining the way that our dogs become integral parts of our lives and the things that happen to us.

I enjoyed this book for the easy reading and short chapters. The Author is talking about some hard subjects and manages to keep it positive instead of just laying guilt trips or placing blame. This also confirms for me that I should not have any pets for now even though I love animals. I love them too much to get one that I can not give enough time to.

So this book made me wanted to adopt a dog right away. I like dogs already and like NYC and New Orleans and people who can describe animals and places with heart. However, normally, short stories are not my thing. I loved this book though. Somehow the short stories were woven together with a continuity that held my attention.

Told by a man who accidently got into the dog rescuing business and the stories of some of the most memorable. I highly recommend it as it might persuade you to do the same or just might touch you enough to help those who do this work already.
He even talks favorably of pit bulls and showcased one on the cover, :).

I adore this book, it made me think about how animals and humans are tied together, how any one person can make a difference. Also, reading about saying goodbye somehow gave me a bit of closure I'd been looking for since my pet rabbit died. It's an excellent book about animals and the people they find.

If you love dogs and have ever anguished over stopping by the side of the road to try and catch a lost stray you have to read this book. Yes there are others out there just like you!
And if you love dogs but don't consider yourself a Pit Bull Person you need to read this book because you will be.

Ken Foster's sweet tale of falling in love with the outcast breeds, rotties and pit bulls. then he documents his experience with hurricaine katrina. it's a must read for dog rescuers and pit bull and rottie guardians.

I loved this book as much as I love dogs (and that's a lot). The author does an amazing job of portraying the personalities of his dogs and at the same time telling a heartwarming (and sometimes heart-wrenching) story.

When I heard Ken Foster on NPR's Fresh Air, I thought he was fantastic, but I'm a little ambivalent about the book -- at times it's very moving, and at times it's just preachy.

I've had more than my fair share of animals who "found" me so this book really caught my attention. If you love animals, you'll like this one.

Some great vignettes, but the ending is lackluster. At times, the train of thought is difficult to follow. Overall, OK.

Even though I'm a cat lover, it restored me emotionally to read stories of one man's love letters to his dogs.
