I've read this book through once quickly and am savoring it more slowly a second time. Most parenting books are too practical for me without laying proper theoretical/biblical foundations. This book really pushes us to think about why we choose particular parenting approaches and gives us freedom in choosing a variety of approaches from a biblical framework.
I truly enjoyed this book. It is rare to find a book on parenting that satisfies both the intellect's desire to understand and the heart of the parent who so desperately wants some practical advice from those wise folk who have gone before us. Sisemore offers both in this well written and timely book on covenant children.
Sisemore understands and emphasizes the causal relationship between beliefs and practices. Thus, he starts by building a solid, scriptural theology of children as a foundation for a discussion of practices. While he clearly and admittedly comes from a Reformed tradition, he discusses openly and gently yet with conviction controversial topics like infant baptism, what happens to infants when they die, and admitting children to the Lord's table. I ordered this book thinking it was a new book by Timothy Sisemore. However, I realized immediately that it is the exact same book as an earlier work, "Of Such is the Kingdom". For some reason, they re-printed it under a different title. Under either title, it is my favorite children's ministry book on my shelf.
