This book was pure smut.
The author tries to walk the fine line between erotica and actual story, which leads to that (s)he fails misserably at both.
The story is interesting, but poorly executed. The two main characters are somewhat believable up until the ending, where the authors by trying to create an interesting twist manages to kill any empathy you as a reader might have developed for them.
The erotic segments in the book are fairly crude, short and far inbetween.
This is not a book I would re...more

Wow! I put off reading this for months because I just wasn't sure I would get into it and I wanted to be in the mood for a series- I wanted to read all four books in a row instead of broken up.
Let's just say I was worried for nothing! I was hooked from page 1 and couldn't wait to see what happened next. I've read very, very few erotica books- it's just not something I ever really got into and when I got this series I, somehow, had no idea that this was, in fact, erotica. When I finally opened m...more
The plot of the book was an intriguing one and had much promise. However, the simplicity of the author's writing made the book seem less that what it could have been. The writing style turned me off enough that I was not invested in the characters and couldn't even finish reading the book.
This book was a pretty good read it was just very predictable. I was able to figure out the twist early into the book. It think if it weren't so predictable I may have given it 4 or 5 stars. This was my frist Velvet book, I think I'll read more.
I didn't like. It had no emotional connection at all for me. Not impressed. Didn't turn me on at all. I have read other books that make me want to be the woman in the book but I got nothing from this one

This book catches my attention because of the tag line "black is so much sexier than grey.". A good read yes, but the twist and the events are so predictable. Nothing compared to fifty shades.

She'sliving the high life, but her sex life has hit a low point. Once a tiger between the sheets, the judge's interest has cooled considerably, and Ariel is wound so tight she's about to explode. I really liked this book. I removed a star because as much as I enjoyed the steaminess of The Black Door, it would have been better if there would have been more romance.

I was/am torn about Preston. On one hand, he was a great guy and Ariel could have been more supportive and not so bratty when it came to the lack of attention he gave her due to his focus on being a Supreme Court judge. On the other hand, he didn't have to be quite so standoffish towards her. And the (view spoiler)...more

Saw the book at the top picks for e-book so I was intrigued and decided to read it. The plot is promising but the story was badly written. No way near FiftyShades. The twist in the end made it worst. I don't think I will read the next book in the series.
A friend recommended this book b/c I am an attorney and was looking for something light to read. Erotique and an easy read nothing like what I've heard of 50 Shades but still interestingly entertaining.
This was a great book! If you are a fan of erotic fiction, this entire series is a must read! Definitely realistic, nothing over the top or outrageous. Where did this author disappear too?

I was not sure how racy this would have been. I totally enjoyed not only the intimite parts of the book but the story line. I read it in one day.
Did not like the ending. Best phrase would be, "WTF?!?!"
too smut, it's like reading porn, couldn't finish the book.
No sweetie black is so not better than GREY! :|

So predictable! I expected more...

SPECIAL NOTE: The review is more about ranting than fighting for a good point.

The book was promising. Even the tagline was bold enough to compete from Fifty Shades of Grey. But it was way too far from the competition...

I don't know if it's because I used an e-book format or what, but the grammatical and typo errors were so annoying. Seriously? Didn't anyone proofread this?

The author was on the edge of putting twists so that it wouldn't be boring and the erotica genre .. but it lead her to fai...more
I honestly have mixed emotions in this book. First the prologue has such strong promise but as the story goes, it faded.

I'd say that this is my first erotica book. To be completely honest, I was intrigued by the author's name and the synopsis it gives. The Black Door seemed to hold such a promise of lust and forbidden pleasures. Oh there was lust alright and snippets of kinks and fetishes that could have been really interesting if they've showed it more...

Then there's Ariel, the heroine of the s...more

The story was about lonely women, rich, lonely and having facilities to express their loneliness and their desire, to f***ed, to taste sin to taste another men aside from their partners and Trey the owner, gave them facilities, "The Black Door", an exclusive club for Mrs.Money Bag and rich women who can PAY!

This is an honest story, people been hiding from their actual life.
So...let's see...

So far, Ariel's reason came to The Black Door was understandable. She was an a...more

"The Black Door" is a fantasy playground for HIGH POWERED WOMEN full of every erotic sexual fantasy a girl could dream of. At the suggestion of a handsome, professional escort and her wildly freakish best friend..... Ariel decides she'll just go get her looksie on! After her long term man Preston Hendricks' is more than often preoccupied with sitting on the Supreme Court to attend to Ariel's sexual desires, she decides she's now going back to "The Black Door" FOR FULL FLEDGE SATISFACTION! With h...more
Great book, but the ending could have been a bit better, was as if the author had enough of writing it and wanted to make a quick ending
I enjoyed it at first but then it got predictable. And I was very annoyed with the ending. I had hoped for Ariel to be caught. Oh well.

I was bored and it was sitting in my iBooks because my friend gave me copies of different e-books. I had no idea this was erotica. But I already started it and I got curious. I finished it. It was a really fast read.
I forgot when I read this but I think it was during the car ride from break.

This book left me disgusted! It is very poorly written. The plot is boring and predictable, the characters, including the leading character are extremely shallow and unlikable. I suppose this book falls in the erotic fiction genre, but it's NOT erotic or sexy at all. The sex scenes are boring and crude. Reading this book was a complete waste of time. Black is DEFINITELY NOT HOTTER than GREY!

Good book, not great. The "twist" was predictable, the ending rushed, and overall only just okay. Not sure if it was a $10 book. I probably wont read the rest at that price.

Also, I don't know if it was because i had the ebook or what, but the amount of grammatical & word replacement errors was very distracting...

i loved this book and was raving about it - especially as i knew there was another two after this - however the ending to this was very abrupt and not very satisfactory ... might not even get the next ones :o(
but still the story idea and whole gist was excellent - just the ending was too 'all things smoother over' too much !
Since this is a series, obviously, the first book has to have a cliffhanger. Each chapter of the book, in my opinion, is a bunch of cliffhanger. Maybe I got used to reading books that build so much tension, that this book did not deliver. For sure it will take sometime before I read the next book of this series.

Okay so there are four books of velvet. I like the first book and then parts of second! But then It was now dragging and I felt like I am watching some soap from Lifetime!

Actually, this book makes me sick! You will know about it when you read it okay. I don't want to spoil some details.
