Lord of Scoundrels (Scoundrels #3)
They call him many names, but Angelic isn't one of them...
Sebastian Ballister, the notorious Marquess of Dain, is big, bad, and dangerous to know. No respectable woman would have anything to do with the "Band and Blight of the Ballisters" - and he wants nothing to do with respectable women. He's determined to continue doing what he does best - sin and sin again - and al

This is my favorite book of all time (well, tied with Jane Eyre). Great hero, heroine, story, humor, romance, angst. Perfect except I didn't want it to end.
I fell in love with Dain from the moment of his birth. He was an ugly baby, loved only by his dearest mother, who was taken away from him. He was horribly treated by others growing up because of his half-Italian heritage and his large nose and ungainly features. Not knowing love, he felt he was unworthy of being loved. As an adult, he lived...more

I hated this book.I hated the hero.I hated his brat.I hated everybody but the heroine, and her I pitied for having these other morons around.
Well. Now I feel like I kicked a puppy because everybody told me to read this book and that it would be wonderful.
It was beautifully written, sure.
And it had a lot of scenery change that consumed a big chunk of time, while other HR usually happen in a matter of days,or if they do not,we just get a FIVE WEEKS LATER insert and then the story unnaturally moves...more

Wow! This book was very good. For once I loved the heroine! Plus the hero had some very dark parts of his personality that needed to be worked through.
The book starts out explaining how the Marquess of Dain became the cynical rake he is today. His father was very cruel to him and his mother ran away leaving him all alone. He is half Italian, so he has a big nose and a very awkward body as a child for which he is tormented mercilessly while at Eton, where his dad sent him when he was eight. He le...more

Having read this book praised all over the net, I confess I was a bit afraid of being disappointed. In the end, I WAS somewhat disappointed, because it didn´t wowed me as much as I expected. I really liked LOS, but it's not my #1 all-time favorite book.
What I loved:
1- The hero and the heroine, Jessica and Dain, were not like the standard characters so common in historical romances, that is, the gorgeous hero and the naive heroine. From the beginning, I was captivated by characters who "broke the...more

The first half of this book was a lot of fun to read, right up until the point where the heroine pulled a gun on the hero. From that point, I began to question my sanity in reading the book, as well as my own comprehension of the English language.
What, you ask, would cause me to wonder if I understood English? Well, you're reading this, so I will share a few choice sentences from the book:
"What the Bane and Blight of the Ballisters was, at the moment, was terrified." (pg 173 in my copy). Ummmm....more

I absolutely loved Lord of Scoundrels. This was my first reading of a Loretta Chase novel, and I will definitely be seeking out other books written by her in the future. Jessica was an extraordinary heroine who had a near perfection that one does not often find in a romance novel. The third book in the Scoundrels series by Loretta Chase. Just reread this one. When I read it the first time I liked it but didn't get all the hype about it. When I started reading it the second time, it was like reading it for the first time. I didn't remember anything about it. I read it more slowly this time and I could see more clearly how people could fall for Sebastian and Jessica. Sebastian was a product of his upbringing. If one could call it an upbringing. It touched me deeply to think...more

I loved, loved, LOVED this book! I loved the lead characters, I loved the bit of intrigue, I loved the author's writing style, I loved knowing what was in the hero's, as well as the heroine's heads, I loved the witty repartee, I loved that the HEA was long enough and very satisfying ... can you tell I was really enamored of this book? I won't even bother to give any details, as I am probably the last woman on the planet (that reads romances, anyway) who hadn't read it! Thank you, all you ladies...more
I have to say that this was my first Loretta Chase romance, and though it didn't put me off the author completely, I definitely did not enjoy it as most everyone else seems to have. People seem to adore this book and I guess I just missed the boat on that one. Lord of Scoundrels was not at all horrible, though, which is why I plan to read more Loretta Chase before I make a definite decision on this author. As one other reviewer wrote, there was just something missing ... he was (mostly) great, s...more

I hardly know what to say about this one. I haven't read too many historicals in the past year, but boy oh boy, maybe I should start! This book had me totally riveted! The story, the witty dialogue, the oh-so-complicated hero, the take-no-guff heroine, the whole love/hate thing between the H/h--it was at times funny, sad, frustrating, but there was never a dull moment. At times I felt sooo sorry for Dain, who grew up unwanted and unloved, but other times I wanted to slap him upside the head and...more

A neat historical romance! Nicely written. Very entertaining. The two main characters, Jessica and Sebastian (Dain) were wonderful. Dain was unwanted and unloved as a child and grew up believing he was the ugliest man on earth. Jessica was his spot of sunshine who had quick wit, intelligence and a wonderful sense of humor.

I'll be honest and say that going into this I was a little worried. I've been let down so many times because my hopes are set so high because of all the "hoopla" surrounding certain books...But let me tell you I wasn't let down...not one bit!
Chase created some of the most memorable characters I think I've ever read about. And unlike most times the characters where equally liked; quite often I lean towards one more then the other, but that didn't happen with this one. I jus...more

This is regularly voted not only one of the best historical romances of all time, but one of the best romance novels of all time. I love Loretta Chase's traditional Regencies, so when I saw this novel consistently taking the top spot in AAR's Top 100 Romances list, and how often this book is referenced by romance readers and writers, I decided to try it myself.

This is absolutely one of my favorites of all time. I loved Dain and Jessica from the start and was rooting for them the whole time. Jess is at the to top of my fav heroine list right now. I loved the way she handled Dain, and the way she managed him without him even knowing it. My heart ached for Dain and his loveless childhood, and I couldn't wait until he realized that Jessica really did love him and that he was deserving of it.

If you're looking for a light, well written historical romance with strong characters, look no further.
I take issues with many romance novel heroines. They are portrayed as witty, strong, and independent individuals...that is, when the rake is not in the same room as them. Sorry, but getting hot and bothered just by the way a man's white teeth flash when he smiles roguishly seems more like the reaction a hormone crazed teenager would have.

This is the first historical romance I've read, and probably one of only five romances I've read in total. I have always kept away from the Romance genre because I believed the heroines were feeble and rather pathetic and could only exist in life if they had a man, hence my affection for the kiss-arse chicks you find so readily in urban fantasy, but I have always enjoyed romance movies and I am very much a romantic at heart, so it was time to put aside my misconceptions and explore.

So I picked up Loretta Chase's Lord of Scoundrels solely because the Smart Bitches love it so much. Seriously, they really, really love it. Like, 'why don't you marry it' levels of love. And you know what? I kinda do, too.
With almost any romance novel, trying to describe the plot can become an exercise in feeling silly. I mean really, we all know what's going to happen: boy meets girl, sparks fly, complicating factors of various degrees occur, then love triumphs in the end. And that's precisely...more

This turned out to be one of my all time favourite historical romances. The beauty and the beast theme will never get old for me.
I think my favourite part of this story was that the heroine and I share a name and it was very easy for me to slip into the daydream of being her. Whenever Sebastien sighed "Jess" it sent shivers down my spine!

Suggested to me by a wise romance fiction guru, this book is in my top ten PERIOD. I've read it more than a few times, and if I pick it up and start... I'm going to read the WHOLE thing all over again. I love it that much.

Alright! I loved it. Everyone said I would and I did. I loved Dain the tortured hero! I laughed out loud several times and even shed a tear a couple of times. I couldn't put it down all day (good thing my boss wasn't around) It had all the great aspects a romance novel should have. I have learned my lesson. Now I just feel foolish that it took me so long to read it. Stupid book cover prejudice. Seriously, someone should talk to Ms. Chase's publishers about a new cover reissue.

Lord of Scoundrels is a good old fashioned Historical Romance with well developed characters who I fell in love with. I absolutely LOVED the hero, who is so well written, I could see numerous plotlines for him. The heroine is feisty and smart, with a certain amount of lust that modern women just get. Good book- if Historical Romance is what you're looking for! 4.5 out of 5!

I attended New England public schools. We diagrammed sentences. We were drilled in spelling and grammar. This brutal process proved useful in later life. It turned out that everything they taught me in school--including the evil word problems in math--was useful in later life. Too bad I forgot most of it.
