Book twenty-five of my presidential challenge.

I like Ike. There, I said it, I like Ike. I had always assumed that that old campaign slogan was being either ironic or wrong but no, he seems like he was a great guy who I would totally love to hang out with.

This is the third and final book of the "Generals who became Presidents" part of my challenge. I've got to say, I've been very impressed with all three: Washington, Grant, and now Eisenhower.

This book covers almost exclusively Eisenhower's milit

In my mind IKE was a great general but there was a void in my mind regarding his eight years as president. This book covers his entire life but helped me understand his political years. I probably still need to read another book that goes over his years in the White House to fully understand this time period. IKE really never cared about what people thought of him. He had a reputation of not be a hard working president, but in truth he was very hard working but he was not interesting in playing ...more

John Wukovits provides a very readable narrative of Eisenhower's life, and does a good job relaying the stresses that the man faced in the role of Supreme Allied Commander. He addresses the major points of Eisenhower's role in the war, and particular his struggles to maintain an impartial and level head when dealing with the British as well as his more troublesome American subordinates and seniors. This book is a good survey of Eisenhower's role in the war, although it does lack some depth and c ...more

This is a nice biography of Dwight David Eisenhower, focusing mainly on his military career and his role in the European campaign of World War II. It was a great perspective on conditions soldiers faced in the war, how strongly the allied nations were bound, and Eisenhower's fraternal committment to soldiers on the ground. My one complaint is that several times the author does try to compare and contrast Eisenhower's tactics with strategies used in the War in Iraq. This was irritating to me, bec ...more

I listened to the audio DVD's and liked the speaker. The book was fairly easy to follow while driving and the speaked spoke well. The book wasn't amazing but it gave me a good introduction to Eisenhower and would like to read more about him. It gave me insight as to his leadership/management style.

The Great Generals series is a cousin to the American Presidents Series. See my review of Richard Nixon...

Recommends it for: History fans
This is an interesting book for someone like me who new very little about Eisenhower. I knock a star off because at times it got a bit dry, but overall I liked the book and would recommend it if you like history.

Poorly written, just basic facts. But with random tangents comparing the past situation to either Iraq or Afghanistan.
