Tanto fare e tanto girare, sempre in ansia, sempre in agitazione, sempre aspettandosi qualcosa.

Semplice, ironico, strambo, realistico, ossessionante, folle

¿A qué viene tanta prisa?

Translated by Thomas B. Ahrens and Edward T. Larkin

"He belongs to a lower form of the human species. An occasional game of poker is the only intellectual activity I have observed in him, and even then he loses most of the time. You don't know him, but I always had the notion-even before I had met him and long before I knew who he was: 'This mandrill actually walks more or less like a human'. It wasn't out of spitefulness...but I was really surprised that he was so good at walking upright....Well

The blurb on the back cover of this edition claims that Murnau and Hitchcock were inspired by this story, and it is indeed more a clever idea for a film than a fully realized novel. The simple premise is this: a student who obsesses about a woman tries to sell stolen books to take her on a holiday. Caught and handcuffed, he jumps through a window and spends the next few hours on the run, still trying to collect enough money for his doomed plan, but since he can't show his hands, all his ...more

It was rather absurd-like in the beginning. I couldn't understand till the last page what all this was coming too: all his escaping, stealing, begging and so on. And then in that last moment it became clear to me and perhaps to Demba as well. And all the sarcasm (I'd say the book is full of it) fades away and you feel blue. The plot isn't too original (there are a lot of books that are built on the same principal) but still I like the realisation of it.
Nickolai
