I flew through this last night because it's a lot of fun and very readable. I think the writing is almost better, crisper, than in The Silent Hour because Lincoln playing off of Joe is really fabulous. i think had I read the entire series in order, I'd be heartbroken for how little Joe is in book 4.
The story is straight forward and I guessed the "twist" and was hoping for more but, again, a solid read. Props for the intro of Amy as the BFF whom Joe met off-screen. I love this choice and wish mo...more

This book grabbed me from the first page. Reminiscent of Raymond Chandler, the pacing and clipped dialogue from the start made it easy reading. The opening paragraph is arresting and just plain fabulous:
"The last time John Weston saw his son alive, it was a frigid afternoon in the first week of March, and John's granddaughter was building a snowman as the two men stood int eh driveway and talked. Before he left, John gave his son a fatherly pat on the shoulder and promised to see him again soon....more

In this debut mystery novel, former cops Lincoln Perry and Joe Pritchard are private investigators who are propositioned to take on a challenging case. Wayne Weston, also a PI, was recently found dead in his upscale Cleveland home with no sign of a struggle. Additional factors in the case are that his wife Julie and 5-year-old daughter Betsy are missing. Are they dead as well? Did Wayne kill them and then kill himself? Or did someone else kidnap them and kill Wayne? There are many possibilities,...more
Cleveland private-eyes Lincoln Perry and Joe Pritchard are hired to investigate the supposed suicide of Wayne Weston and the disappearance of Wayne's wife and young daughter, but when the Russian mob gets involved, the investigation takes a deadly turn.
An excellent debut crime novel. Fast-paced and suspenseful, with snappy dialog. Set in Cleveland, Ohio with true-to-life city details. Expect great things to come from 21-year-old author Koryta. Highly recommend.

I have read a few reviews here and there on this series and this author. I am glad I followed my instincts and bought this thriller and read it pretty much immediately upon its arrival. I had an agenda as I have been neglecting my thriller and suspense books on Mt Git'r'Read in favor of the cozies, UF, and other mysteries. That's not a bad thing, all the books have been pretty sweeeeet....but my dad is coming out in August and we trade thrillers and suspense between the three of us (Seester, Dad...more
Tonight I Said Goodbye is a very well written entry into the detective / mystery genre. The fact that the narration was by Scott Brick is an added bonus which adds up to a 5+ star recommendation. I will say if I had read it rather than listened to it, I still would have awarded 5 stars but I wouldn't have read to it in my car, done an extra hour of yard work so I could keep listening or sat in my driveway to finish it off yesterday after a long day in the car.

I saw Michael Koryta at the Decatur Book Festival earlier this year, he made a good impression and I decided to give one of his novels a try. Best place to start is always this beginning. This is his first book and also the first book int he Lincoln Perry series. I liked it. He did a talk with Michael Connelly so I was expecting the book to be a bit like the Harry Bosch novels and it was to a point. I think these were a bit grittier and more "Dragnet" style than Harry Bosch is. I thought the mys...more
Tonight I Said Goodbye is a solid piece of entertainment - good pace, plenty of action, well judged characterisation, effective dialogue, decent sense of place, and sound plotting (even though one aspect of the ending was telegraphed from quite a long way out). There’s a little bit too much in the way of reflection and description in places, but Koryta writes in an easy-going manner that is deceptively rich and which draws the reader in and tugs them along. There are plenty of twists, albeit non...more
I had no idea of what to expect going into this book. I have read the current three stand alone novels by Koryta and loved them all. Being that Tonight I Said Goodbye is in a different genre than those novels and the first novel that Koryta published, I wasn't sure whether or not I would like it as much. I am happy to say that I enjoyed the first book in the Lincoln Perry series nearly as much. The story has a great plot, well-developed characters, and constantly leaves the reader guessing as to...more
I recently attended a ceremony where Koryta was the honored alumnus, and enjoyed his speach so much that I couldn't wait to read his writing. Perhaps it was the different purposes, or maybe he's gotten better as a writer since this first book, but I was slightly disappointed. In person, Koryta was a bright and funny guy, and there was a naturalness to his speaking that took it several notches aboce the usual commencement speach. That naturalness is missing in his writing, unfortunately. Although...more

Probably the best first novel by an author I've read in a year. The characters were great, the action was awesome, and the tension wouldn't let you stop reading. Definitely worth a look for any fans of Dennis Lehane's "Kenzie and Gennaro", Michael Connelly's "Harry Bosch", John Sandford's "Davenport", and Robert Crais' "Elvis Cole and Joe Pike". Let's just say that after I read this novel I went and purchased every novel in the Lincoln Perry series.

Simply put, Michael Koryta is one of my favorite authors out there and this is the only book I have read from him. Completely caught me by surprise with the twist he provided. The twist was so good that when I came across it, I started laughing out loud because it got me so good. This is an excellent debut novel and I still cant believe he was 21 when he wrote this. He has gotten praise from some of the top mystery writers and I had to read something from him which I was extremely satisfied with...more
First in a series featuring former cops, now PI's, Lincoln Perry and Joe Pritchard, who are hired by a fellow PI's father to discover what really happened to his son. Mr. Weston doesn't believe his son committed suicide and did away with his wife and child as the newspapers are implying. Perry and Pritchard are good at what they do, and what they find may not be something Mr. Weston really wishes to hear.

I enjoyed this book a lot. I was surprised it was written by such a young writer as it reads like any experienced mystery writer's novel. The main characters were interesting. The mystery was intriguing. My only complaint was with the resolution. I didn't see the ending coming at all, and I don't mean that in a good way. There were no hints as to what the solution might be. It just seemed to come out of nowhere. While I enjoyed the book enough to read the next in the series, I would have liked t...more

For the first few pages, Tonight I Said Goodbye looked like just another good mystery, but it soon became an excellent novel as well. Lincoln Perry displays a nice sense of humor with his much older partner as well as a good and honest self-image. Of course there are the requisite twists and complications—especially the identity of the killer of the first victim!—but it's all easily followed and clearly written. Although I really liked the paranormal dimension in Koryta's Cypress House, I didn't...more
An excellent debut novel from a Cleveland native, Michael Koryta's "Tonight I Said Goodbye" is the first in a series of detective novels starring his private eye partners Perry and Pritchard. This one deals with the murder of a private eye, the disappearance of the victim's wife and daughter, and the Russian mob in Cleveland. It's a suspenseful read with some pretty good plot twists throughout. Recommended for fans of Les Roberts (another mystery writer who uses Cleveland as a setting), Harlan C...more
I first heard of Michael Koryta in an Entertainment Weekly book review. It was a positive review of one of his recent books, so I put his name on my to read list. I'm a sucker for mystery/PI novels, so decided to give him a try and started with his first book. It was a quick, entertaining read; but the twists were very predictable and the writing was only so so (given the very positive reviews of his later books, I suspect/hope it's because this was his first book and also at the age of 21). I think that I read somewhere that Michael Koryta wrote "Tonight I Said Goodbye" when he was 21 years old. I am twice that age and still could not write anything as good as this novel. So, that being said, this is a book that shows an author at a very stage of his life, blessed with enormous talent that I am sure is paying off now, a few books down the road. I am reading Koryta's books in order.

A private investigator has taken his own life and his wife and daughter are missing. Enter Lincoln Perry and Joe Pritchard, hired by the deceased father, John Weston to determine if his son’s death was a result of suicide or something more sinister and to locate his missing daughter in law and grandchild. As the story unravelled new plot elements were introduced constantly changing the landscape and focus of the investigation – a great way to keep the reader guessing – I didn’t know who the bad...more
I had read A Welcome Grave, the third book in the series, last month and enjoyed it so wanted to go back and catch up with the first two.
As with A Welcome Grave, I enjoyed the writing style. It's fast paced, funny and sarcastic at times. I liked the characters, especially Lincoln and Joe. It's interesting to see how they have developed since I've read the third book.
The ending took a twist I hadn't expected, which was a nice surprise.

Tonight, I Said Goodbye was a fun, intelligent detective novel. The protagonist and supporting cast were well developed and had psychological depth. The pace was fast and balanced with plenty of surprises, twists, and action scenes. The setting (Cleveland) and the different themes (Russian mafia, capitalism, and private investigation) were interesting and plausibly described. I am definitely going to read the next book in this series.
This book was fun initially because it takes place in Cleveland (and not that many series do). In fact, the guy did such a good job depicting Cleveland, I was actually surprised that he doesn't live here. But as the book went on, it felt so derivative of the Spenser and Crais' series that I just got tired of it. I probably won't read any more. Also, I can't for the life me figure out why it was nominated for an Edgar.
If I could have done 3.5 stars, I would have. Koryta did build some good suspense. There were quite a few characters to keep track of and the story was somewhat predictable, but I did like it and will continue to read the series. It is about a father hiring Lincoln Perry, a detective, to find out who murdered his son and what happened to his missing daughter-in-law and granddaughter. Since John Sandford is my favorite author for suspense/crime, we'll see if Koryta can compare as I read a few mor...more
Two reasons to envy Michael Koryta: The first is that he is versatile. Having read three of his well-written ghost stories, his first direction as a mystery writer is equally good. The second reason is that he's so good for being so young. This novel was published when he was 21, and it reads like someone more seasoned.

This book held my interest from the beginning. Lincoln Perry and Joe Pritchard are former policemen who are now private detectives. They are hired by Wayne Weston's father to investigate his alleged suicide and the disappearance of his wife and daughter. Weston was also a PI who worked for a prominent businessman in town. The Russian mob is involved and there are several twists. All in all a great suspense/crime novel. It was good enough that I'll be reading more by Michael Koryta.
