I read this on the flight to and from Australia. It's goo airplane reading. Michael Dobson, the co-author, is a friend and many mutual friends appear as characters. I myself am badly wounded although the wound turns out not to be bad enough to get me sent back to the States. The character of MacArthur is the most vivid in the book, as he undoubtedly would expect. His vanity is a bit over-emphasized; someone with no knowledge of MacArthur might think there was nothing to him other than vanity...more
This insightful, entertaining alternative history of Pacific Theater was much better then I anticipated. The multiple viewpoint characters, well-described historical figures (especially Douglas MacArthur), the many sub-plots, and the variety of settings made this a excellent read. Particularly, the historical premise (that the American forces were defeated at Midway) felt plausible and exciting.
A nice alternate history that is not so diferent from our hstory. It is quite believable. The portrayals of MacArthur, Roosevelt, Patton, and others are quite good.It could have easily happened this way.
I'm such a sucker for Alternate History. This book supposes that the Manhattan Project was a flop, that the US Navy lost the Battle of Midway, and that Gen. MacArthur was given the greenlight to invade Japan.
