A book listing all the names of classical mythology and trying to decipher where those names come from and what they could mean. It's really no more and no less than that, a philological exercise in ancient Greek.

It's interspersed, here and there, with a dry sense of humor, and whenever I came across it, it was so unexpected that I laughed for about 3 minutes. I suspect there may be more of it, but I knew only about 60% of the names and myths referenced, so a lot of it mat have been lost on me.

Michael Grant was an English classisist, numismatist, and author of numerous popular books on ancient history. His 1956 translation of Tacitus’s Annals of Imperial Rome remains a standard of the work. He once described himself as "one of the very few freelances in the field of ancient history: a rare phenomenon". As a popularizer, his hallmarks were his prolific output and his unwillingness to ...more
