When little flamingo Sylvie learns she is pink because of the pink shrimp she eats, she tries eating new foods, wondering if she will change colors. Sure enough, grapes turn her purple, palm leaves leave her green, and with a few bites of a paisley swimsuit, she is patterned from foot to feathers. Changing colors is so much fun--will Sylvie ever go back to pink?

Sattler's illustrations of the big-eyed Sylvie are the real charm of the book, which would fit nicely into a Pre-K curriculum More...

Sylvie is a flamingo who wonders why she and her family are pink while people on the beach look so different. If shrimp make her pink, what would leaves, grapes, and chocolate do? As she gulps her way through colors, prints, and patterns, Sylvie's feathers change their color to match. All that gobbling, though, leaves her a little queasy. With a special dessert, maybe pink isn't so bad after all.

Although this book has obvious similarities to A Bad Case of Stripes, the bright, che More...

Sylvie learns from her mother that flamingos are pink because they eat pink little shrimp. Sylvie gets an idea. What if she other colored stuff? Would she turn funny colors? She tries out her idea by eating green leaves, purple grapes, blue sky, a red kite, a striped towel, a flowered sun hat and a paisley bathing suit. Guess what? It works! But maybe a little too much. Sylvie finds herself a whole mish mash of colors and decides maybe there's nothing wrong with being pink...with a splash of col More...

A fun tale of Sylvie the flamingo who wonders why she is pink. Once her mama explains that it is because she and her flamingo family eat pink shrimp, an idea is born. Sylvie tries eating all manner of different colored food and object and enjoys the novelty until she is too full and no longer feels like herself. A sweet story of appreciating new things while valuing the characteristics that make a person special. It was a hit during pre-k storytime paired with "A Bad Case of Stripes" More...

The color change thing and the gentle, understated "be yourself"message reminds me of Shannon's A Bad Case of Stripes. This one is a lot less complex and more accessible to younger kids. And the art will be fun for ANY kid!

Sylvie is a great way to show children that being yourself is always the best thing to do. This short story explores finding ourselves and trying new things. I think young children would enjoy the creativity of Sylvie.

Cute, simple and playful story about a flamingo who wants to be a different color. Illustrations are delightful; they're bright with a cartoon feel and placed on background washes that look like real oil painting.

When Sylvie the pink flamingo learns her color comes from the little pink shrimp she eats, she decides to expand her choices, trying everything under the sun and, unfortunately, overdoing it. www.hcpl.net

Sylvie is adorable, and I loved this take on the 'turning different colors' genre. Simple sentences make this perfect for a quick storytime, or for emergent readers to read on their own.

Sylvie is a pink flamingo who decides to find out what it's like to be red, or purple, or striped. A fun story about exploring identity and accepting who you (or your family) are.
