This is the second book in the MacCarrick Brothers Trilogy and I'm sorry to say I still don't get how easily those brothers dismiss their curse after letting it dictate all their lives before "surrendering" to the heroine. Second in Cole's MacCarrick Brothers series, once again I was blown away by the author's grasp on what women want in their romance novels- especially as far what the hero gives the heroine in the sack!

Hugh has loved Jane since he got to know her as young girl, while working for her father. A little later, on the brink of womanhood, she offers herself to him. As much as Hugh longs to have her, he doesn't take her. Rather, he walks away and takes a job ensuring he will never be tempted to keep her- ever. He signs on as an assassin for a secret government agency directed by Jane's father, certain that if she ever found out what he's done, she'll never want him.

But then he receives a missive stating that Jane is in grave danger. He kills himself getting back to her, leaving his brother Courtland (If You Dare), wounded, but alive. And Jane certainly is in danger- a man who once worked aside Hugh wants revenge for all Jane's father put him through and if he harms Hugh in the process? All the better.

Jane of course is excited to see the man she's never forgotten, and the man whom all other men in her life never measure up to, but she's still angry with him for leaving her so heart broken without even a goodbye between them.

Hugh wants to see Jane protected and then get out, for he truly believes the curse his family labors under is active and harmful to any woman he might fall for, but then Jane's father comes up with a plan to marry them off so the hardened Scot can get her out of Dodge. Hugh sees no other alternative and agrees. Will he be able to protect her AND keep his distance- or will the love that never left his heart be the ultimate deciding factor in both their lives.

LOVED this one as much as the first, although I do find it difficult to get through the two h/h's fighting their attraction til they get together. Cole does the hottest sex scenes I've read in a long time and that more than makes up for the cliched plot devices to keep them apart.

Still, the whole unfulfilled forever love thing is very irresistible as well- and Hugh was so deliciously jealous in love with her, and she just the same, that I can't help but give If You Desire a 4 out of 5!

I read this book a while back, but thought it was only "good" so I never went for the other 2 books. Well, I just adore Kresley Cole, so figured I'd better suck it up and read the other two. I read the first(meh) and third (loved it!) books and it really didn't change my opinion of this book. In contrast with almost everyone else, I didn't like this one as much as the first, If You Dare.

The plot of If You Dare was rather silly and so I was pleasantly surprised by the villain plot in the beginning of this book. But Cole didn’t really do anything with it and the subplots and devices she came up with felt rather random to me. Plus the villain’s demise was rather anticlimactic.

I must say I found this book a vast improvement from the first in this series. It's still not a masterpiece of fiction, and it would've been much better without the slightly too tramp-y heroine and the rather obtuse "yeah, yeah, you're cursed" hero, but we can't have everything.

The suspense subplot is the saving grace of this one, with the villain much more interesting than the leading couple. I wished there'd be more of him throughout the story and his demise was a bit too abrupt and swift, pro...more I must say I found this book a vast improvement from the first in this series. And here's the major bone I have to pick about this book. Once again the hero and heroine were too bland to elicit much enthusiasm in me to even bother to care for them.
Jane was a hussy and a tramp even before she turned eighteen...And she wondered why the guy split. He saw a nutjob in the making and decided to cut his losses. Tell me again, what was with the plan of getting to marry her by teasing him mercilessly? The only thing such a plan ever accomplishes is for the heroine to end with her skirt around her waist and ruined, while the hero merrily moves on.
Unfortunately that wasn't the case with Hugh. He was as much in love with her as she was with him, but he was cursed. Remember that nasty little curse that's supposed to be the main story-arc of the series? Once again, it only appeared when convenient and to make the hero even more of a jackass as he already was.

Of course, now I have to read the final book. The little cliffy about Ethan getting shot and disappearing from the face of the earth (Is he dead? Is he alive? Do we even care?) had me flying through the rest of Hugh's story so I could see what really happened.

And speaking of the rather anti-climatic end of the villain and the untimely death of the suspense subplot...I skimmed through the remaining pages, barely stiffening yawns, because the two idiots of the leading couple reverted back to the beginning of the story when the villain met his deserved death...And it was boring...Even the requisite happy ending was boring...Not to mention Court and Annalia's (from the first book) cameo...Yawn! But a great plot devise to get the hero thinking and finally forgoing the blasted curse.

Not good, but not as bad as the first book. I truly hope Ethan will make up for it...He better.(less)

It took me awhile to warm up to Jane, but eventually I did. Then I got sort of impatient of all the teasing that went on. While it wasn't my favorite of the series, it wasn't bad. I just wished we would have had a bit more of an ending then we got, I would have liked it more.

I really loved the way Jane tired to be a wife to Hugh, trying to clean when she didn't have a clue how to. Hugh is honorable and loves Jane beyond all else- pineing for her aswell and it comes as a shock to him to find the Jane returns those feelings.

This is so different to the First MacCarrick Novel, in the first book, it was the beginning of a relationship and in this one it was the continuance of to heart broken people. Yet, Jane isn't some broken down car crash- no, she has tried to get on with her life- but finds it hard, ten years on, to get over her first and only love. Hugh is the same- unable to think of anything but her for the past ten years, has been hard on him, and he isnt the same as he used to be when he was a 22 year old lad, newly in love with Jane.

This Story is of an equal calibre to 'If You Dare' just the heroine, Jane, had more punch in this one then Anna had in If you dare- both are beautifully written.

I also Love How Hugh basicly gets his ass handed to him a couple of times by Jane- and i loved seeing that. Also, i have no idea how she could so calmly forgive him for leaving her the second time around, i would have been tying him to a chair so he could never ever leave again :P

I love Kresley's writing... it just makes me happy lol
In this book, Hugh held to the belief that the curse of the MacCarrick brothers would kill the women they marry; therefore, he avoided Jane for ten years, going away to work as an assassin for her father while she was left to pine for him.

I loved this book, and was so engrossed, when I realized (with dread) that the end of "If You Desire" was approaching, I popped on Amazon and bought the next one "If You Decieve" on my Kindle. I had read book three first, then read one, and have recently finished two. I have a little bit of a problem, I rarely start a series with the first book. Most of the time I'm so intrigued by the back cover description that I don't notice the book belongs in a series. Kresely Cole does a wonderful job of interweaving the different stories, but makes each book strong enough to be read on it's own.

The hero, Hugh McCarrick, has been in love with Jane for years. Poor man became an assassin in order to flee the temptation she presented, since he knew he could never be with her. Having a family curse passed on to him (and his brothers), he believes that if he marries death will befall his lady love.
Over the years, Jane could not get Hugh out of her head or her heart. Never knowing what had drawn him away, she feels as if he had abandoned her. She knows it would be for best to move on, but when she is finally prepared and on the verge of becoming engaged to another man, the rough highlander returns.
Neither are thrilled when Jane's father forces them to marry, though they both enter the arrangement set on achieving a divorce. However, danger is on their heels and Hugh must whisk Jane away from London to guard her from an assassin that wants her dead - to gain revenge on Jane's father and Hugh.
The romance was sweet, the characters had harbored feelings for each other for years and it was nice to see them finally able to be together. At times I felt really sorry for Hugh, he had wanted Jane for so long and even after he had her, he thought he would have to let her go because of the curse.
I must say, Jane was the typical heroine featured in Kresley Cole's work. She was spoiled and a bit of a brat at times. Her personality is what kept me from giving this book 5 out of 5.
The McCarrick men are the typical, hunky highlanders and their stories are twisted by fate and a curse. If you enjoy historical romance, you should have this trilogy to your TBR list. And, if you are a fan of Kresley Cole's paranormal romance, you will not be disappointed with her historical works.
(Now that I've finished this series, I will admit, book was my favorite!)(less)

QUICK OVERVIEW

Hugh MacCarrick is a big, hot, sexy highlander…Who just so happens to be an assassin. Oh! And he’s also cursed. Anyone who has read the first book knows that because of this curse none of the three MacCarrick brothers will be able to grow a family. The curse has a whole bunch of ominous things, and a bit of blood that covers the loophole.
Jane Weyland is an eccentric beauty that fell in love with Hugh ten years ago, when they first met. Despite the fact that Hugh loved her and she in turn loved him, the curse won. And Hugh forced himself to leave without so much as a goodbye.
Now ten years later, Hugh has to come back to protect Jane from the madman that wants to kill her. But in order to protect her, they must marry…

So as you can see, there are two conflicts here. And I’m just going to get these three dislikes out of the way. One, the conflict with the killer ended really quickly, and without much intensity. It was kind of shoved aside. Ya, that wasn’t the main conflict, but it seemed too abrupt. Two, the whole curse thing got on my nerves! For the love of all that is good and holy in this world! Talk to your brother already! He can tell you to forget about, and just stay married to the poor girl! Three, the ending was also abrupt. I wish there was an epilogue. I would have felt like there was a closing that way.

Now to all the good things. Like I said before, the love! It was all powering. Really, you could feel it. More than once my heart stuttered. I very nearly cried and only three books in my memory have made me actually cry.Hugh was what you would consider a tortured hero, and boy was he tortured. My heart went out to him. I fell in love with this man. Never has there been a highlander that has felt this deeply and sacrificed as much as he did. And to have the courage to go back, that’s an amazing feat. At times he was more than a bit thick-headed, and I wanted to bash him with my fist. But I’m pretty sure his face would have survived better than my knuckles. Oh and then there is Jane. I did find her irksome. She really was horrible to Hugh. I felt for her though, and she has a legitimate reason for her actions. I mean, if someone who broke my heart came back ten years later I would not have been a happy camper either. With that said, Jane was a strong woman. She is perfect for Hugh. They fit like two puzzle pieces.

All in all, 4.5 stars! This series is definitely worth the read. Each story has deep emotions. A true Highland Romance. Can’t wait to read the last one, it’s suppose to be the best! Fingers crossed! I really need a mind blowing read.

My goodness, I really couldn't help but deeply admire and respect Jane Weyland! Ever since at the tender age of 13, she already knew what, or in this case, who she wants and was brave enough to actually show it to him even though Hugh was foolish enough to not have realized her obvious feelings. The first time she set her eyes on Hugh, she immediately voiced out loud to the others that he was hers! What a girl! And when she set out to tempt and seduce him at every turn was so hilarious! So when Hugh realized he didn't stand a chance against her wiles at all, he fled quaking in his boots! Haha Now that's my kind of girl! But the best trait that endeared her to me was her astounding feelings and loyalty to Hugh. She actually waited ten years for him! A DECADE pining over him! What faithfulness! And aside from that, our dear Jane is also very brave and strong. Since she came from a wealthy background, one would deduce that she's a weak pampered spoiled chit. With the threat on her life, I expected her to be the damsel-in-distress all throughout the story, but how she proved me so wrong! (view spoiler) This girl is not just a lady, her courage and resiliency shows she's part amazon! And how i adore her all the more for it! Haha. She is indeed a perfect suit to Hugh. Couldn't ask for a better heroine for our dear hero!

Moving on, Hugh MacCarrick is such a perfect hunk and a deadly shot to boot! The perfect protector and bodyguard for our Jane. One would utterly feel safe and secured under his guard, that's for sure. I admit, i was kinda annoyed at how he kept on evading her advances and giving excuses for them when its so clear he wanted her too! How he kept going on and on about the curse and how he wasn't good enough for her, mildly grated on my nerves. But i understood his reasons, all MacCarrick brothers have been burdened with the curse ever since they were younger. They suffered a fatal blow when their mom was devastated by the loss of their father and somewhat blamed them for it. Still I'm glad that at the end, with the help of course of his dear bro, Court, Hugh finally realized the curse was beatable with the right girl. Haha that was a funny moment, I'm sure Hugh must have dearly felt foolish that time. But I'm extremely pleased he was determined to have her back at all cost when he realized the curse no longer held power over him. I'm glad he finally was brave enough to overcome the curse and claim her for good this time around.

In sum, this book is definitely a good read! I have found another favorite in "If You Desire!" And once again, i applaud Kresley Cole for delivering it to us! I can't wait to read the last installment of this series, and am deeply intrigued at what happened next to Ethan after he got shot and how he would finally have his very own HEA! :D

This book is way better than the first one. I love the story of an unrequited love, and If You Desire is one of the best book with this theme.

Again... hate the cover of this book. But I won't dwell on it this time, like I did in my review of the first book in this series. I just wanted to mention it. Done. Moving on. I wanted to like this so badly. I'm enamored with her IAD series and I don't think I've given any of them anything below four stars. Secondly, this involves Highlanders! I can't decide if I loved this book or just liked it. Eh...it's a hard choice. I think for now I will give it a 3 but who knows, maybe in a day or two I will bump it up to a 4.

So this is Hugh and Jane's book. Hugh is sent back to look over her and possibly take her away due to the fact that someone wants to kill her.
