I enjoyed the beginning when the characters are on the island. Tori & Grant had great chemistry... I loved their contrasting personalities.

Once they leave the island, it just got boring.

This book just seemed to be missing the x factor that made the first book in the series, The Captain of All Pleasures, such a fantastic read.

Also, this story sets the stage for a 3rd book in the series with Ian, cousin to the Southerland Brothers:

So this romance has been on mount TBR for what seems like forever. I found Kresley Cole a few years back and loved her writing so much, I quickly acquired all of her earlier works. I have to say they are just as good as her work today.

The first half if this book is a five and the second half is a three.

This is Kresley Cole's second book. The doesn't have that rat-a-tat-tat pacing or hilarity of her IAD series (which I adore, every fan of paranormal romance needs to check those out.) But it does have some of the elements that Kresley seems to like. Namely the strait laced stoic hero and the spitfire heroine.

There are two books in this series and, although it does seem that the series was designed for continuation, I’m glad that she left this series to do her Immortals After Dark series.

The second in the Sutherland series is Grant’s story and picks up shortly after the end of Derek and Nicole’s story. As the youngest son of a titled family, Grant doesn’t inherit any land upon their father’s death. And like the stereotype of youngest children everywhere, he’s a bit of a carefree prankster.

Until his brother decides to shirk his responsibilities in an effort not to deal with them. So Grant’s kind of had to grow up and has had responsibility thrust on him. In other words, he’s become a bit of a stick-in-the-mud. So when he’s given the opportunity to gain titled lands, he jumps at the chance. Even though it means finding the remaining family that were lost at sea 8 years ago.

Talk about a long shot.

But find them he does. And the surviving members (the daughter, Victoria and her once governess Camilla) are quite different than what he’d expected. Though Victoria and Camilla were once “proper English” they’ve been surviving in the wild for the past 8 years. They’ve seen ships land. And they know what men aboard them want. It’s what probably happened in the non-Disney version of Pocahontas when John Smith spies the young beauty in the wild. So to say they’re suspicious would be to put it mildly.

But there is something about Victoria that even though she repels Grant’s “gentlemanly sensibilities” draws him in. And eventually he convinces the two of them to return with him. But now the story gets slightly more complicated. Because even though Grant has returned Victoria and Camilla to the care of Victoria’s grandfather, Victoria in effect, gets abandoned again. Her grandfather dies, leaving the estate in massive debt (he used all his wealth to find them.) It’s then that Victoria finds out exactly why Grant agreed to come and find them. And what that means to her home. So she tries to make it work. She’s repeating the experience she learned on the island, but this time it’s in the middle of the English countryside.

So the struggle for Grant and Victoria happens on many levels. He wants her to believe that he does care for her, but she’s convinced that he only wants to help because if she fails, then he gets the land. As with the other story in this series, this one takes place over several months, but it’s well written and moves fairly quickly. Of the two, Derek and Nicole’s story is my favorite, but Grant and Victoria give a good read, too.

Grant gets the women off the island and the ladies quickly befriend his cousin Ian. Cammy is dealing with a mysterious illness and Victoria... well, she is determined to have Grant. She finally wears down his defenses, but the man has some serious issues. He cares more about propriety than happiness. It makes it hard to like him, because I mostly just wanted to kick him in the shins for being an idiot.

Life gets even harder for Victoria when she returns to London. And Grant's stupidity reaches new heights. He doesn't deserve her. But when he finally realizes the error of his ways, he is somewhat redeemed.

Kresley Cole is the queen of hot love scenes and that is true here as well. Big points for that --and even more points for the reappearance of Derek and Nicole. Sadly, I must subtract points for the hanging plot surrounding Ian. I got the impression it was a set-up for another book that never came to fruition.

Not quite as good as its predecessor, but still a good read. 4 stars.

While I truly loved the first book of this series, I can't help but think that Cole improved on the brothers with Grant. His controlled manner makes for a fascinating read because Victoria's presence makes him lose control. All the nuances of Cole's characters suck you in and make you cheer for them.

Victoria and Cammy are great characters. The fact that they've been ship wrecked for eight years is fascinating and just goes to show you that woman are capable. Victoria is hilarious in her pursuit of Grant and in her escape attempts on the island. But you start to see that not only did Victoria have to be strong but she is strong as she takes on her families estate after returning from the sea.

Cole doesn't fail in making her characters strong but in doing so many author remove the side of such a strong character that is a weakness. Cole doesn't seem to make this mistake and gives all of her strong and capable characters the ability to have a weakness without destroying the very nature of the character.

I'm one of those readers who wants her Historical Romances to sound, well, historical. Kresley Cole does an amazing job of writing an Historical Romance that sounds like modern times, and IT DOESN'T BOTHER ME. How on earth is this even possible? I'm not really sure, but by God this woman can write.

Good sequel to Cole's (The Captain of All Pleasures. Grant, younger brother to Derek, is more of a stubborn jerk , but still sexy and brooding. Tori is an a brave and intelligent woman, who wants her man, but can do fine without him. I wouldn't have minded if Cammy had ended up with Ian, but Stephen was an excellent substitute. I really feel that their must be another book in this series letting us know the fate of Ian and Erica. It was much too up in the air at the conclusion of this book.

Grant's an arrow straight sea captain. Tori was shipwrecked as a girl, but she's a trooper who's also pretty smart. (treehouse!)

Not as strong as her later books, but still good, especially if you go for the ship captains. Takes a while to get into it but I really liked the end, which surprised me because if I had known where it was going, I don't think that would have been the case.

Much better than the first book in this series - I loved it!

I love how Tori outsmarts him in the beginning on the island, and even though it´s a bit hard to believe what happens, I love how she is a fighter til the end, very clear on what she feels for him.

Grant is adorable. I can just see him being his grumpy serious self, completely thown off balance by this woman and not wanting to admit what he feels.

(alas it is spelled differently but I still cannot resist a book where the heroine shares my name). Overall the book was OK. Grant Sutherland has been hired by an aging aristocrat to find his family that had been lost at sea 8 (?) years before. This may seem impossible but the Sutherlands are clearly a cut above the average man and Grant has been promised the lord's lands as recompense for finding his lost family. After a long period of searching during which time it's clear that Grant is an uptight grump, they are drifting (sailing?) by a random island and he happens to see a blonde girl running on the beach and knows it is Victoria. He chases, she runs, eventually capitulates, there are seductive island scenes, he brings her home, fights his love for her, she gets pissed, he gives up the land from her grandfather without telling her (obviously), she wants to own it and starts selling everything to keep it afloat, learns about shearing sheep, he realizes he loves her and moves into her house (bold move), works hard to help her save the farm, a seduction scene after he saves kittens from a fire, they love each other and decide to raise sheep together.

What I liked:

1. The heroine, true to KC form, has a mind of her own. Tori is a survivor, and kept it together for herself and Cammie Scott, her governess, while they were stranded on the island. Their setup there was quite nifty. She also managed to save her sheep farm. I like that she went after seducing Grant with enthusiasm. Bravo.

2. The supporting characters were entertaining : Ian, Grants cousin is a cheerful troublemaker/womanizer. Camilla Scott had somehow (by eating fish?) lost her mind on the island but got it back in England and then rode of for a lusty affair with the sexy neighbor baron. You go girl!

3. Grant was a lukewarm hero. Not particularly interesting, but good enough. He is great in bed, so he made this list. Thank you, KC, for writing another very generous lover;)

What I didn't like:

1. The entire plot hinges on an entirely unbelievable story line: after nearly a decade, a man on a ship somehow finds a missing girl on a random island. They did not have satellites or GPS, and I have to think this would be basically impossible

2. The trajectory of the story was a little tired. Grumpy man meets precocious and resourceful woman, falls in love, denies it, upsets her, comes to his senses and has to work for forgiveness and save some kittens in a burning barn. But hey, I guess that's the romance genre for you!

For the first time, I find myself distant from the characters.. at first I loved how this was going, but then through the middle I felt it drag till actually something happened and still nothing it was nothing special.. all till Tori took hold of the estate after her grandfather died.. I loved the sheet will of that girl!! Talk about girl power. So for that alone I'd give 4 stars.

I enjoyed every minute of this book. Full of emotional swings from the highest high to the most depressing of lows, this story will leave you feeling wrung out, but only in the very best of ways. Grant and Tori are perfectly matched and once they both deal with their insecurities and decid to enjoy the chance that fate has given them together, the love they share will fill your heart. I may have liked this one better than the first one. I found it long again, but was engrossed the whole time. I also loved the appearance of the couple from the first book.

The growth of the hero was superb. With that length one would hope it would be! I generally really liked the characters, and was disappointed that Cole never wrote Ian's story. I'd like to see what happened with him at some point.

What a great book! The story grabs you from the first page and doesn't let go! I finished this book quickly and not necessarily because it was an easy read but because it was hard to put down. The story, the romance, the sensuality -- this book has all of what I look for in a historical romance. Can't wait for the next one in this series. I highly recommend this book!!

This one was just as enjoyable as the first. It's been a while since I've read a good stranded on a deserted island and then rescued story.

Grant struggled quite a bit with is feelings, and I definitely felt like tossing the book across the room a few times because he was so difficult.

But, I got the happy ending . . . and I'm wondering if we'll ever see Ian's story.

I picked this book up over Christmas in a second-hand thrift store. I expected to love it since I love Cole's other series, but it just didn't keep my attention all that well. It was okay - nothing spectacular. Guess I'll stick with Cole's other series from now on. :)
