I enjoyed the beginning when the characters are on the island. Tori & Grant had great chemistry... I loved their contrasting personalities.

Once they leave the island, it just got boring.

This book just seemed to be missing the x factor that made the first book in the series, The Captain of All Pleasures, such a fantastic read.

Also, this story sets the stage for a 3rd book in the series with Ian, cousin to the Southerland Brothers:

"In fact, they had recently received word that not only had...more

So this romance has been on mount TBR for what seems like forever. I found Kresley Cole a few years back and loved her writing so much, I quickly acquired all of her earlier works. I have to say they are just as good as her work today.

Victoria (Tori) Dearbourne is thirteen when the ship she is sailing on goes down. Her father goes down with the ship, but Tori, her nanny, and her mother make it to a nearby island. Her mother's back is broken, and she quickly perishes. Tori and her nanny are now a...more

The first half if this book is a five and the second half is a three.

This is Kresley Cole's second book. The doesn't have that rat-a-tat-tat pacing or hilarity of her IAD series (which I adore, every fan of paranormal romance needs to check those out.) But it does have some of the elements that Kresley seems to like. Namely the strait laced stoic hero and the spitfire heroine.

Victoria was ship wrecked when she was thirteen. She is now 21, completely reliant, resourceful, and tough as nails after...more

There are two books in this series and, although it does seem that the series was designed for continuation, I’m glad that she left this series to do her Immortals After Dark series.

The second in the Sutherland series is Grant’s story and picks up shortly after the end of Derek and Nicole’s story. As the youngest son of a titled family, Grant doesn’t inherit any land upon their father’s death. And like the stereotype of youngest children everywhere, he’s a bit of a carefree prankster.

Until his...more

A man noted for his courage and integrity, Captain Grant Sutherland journeys to Oceania to find Victoria Dearbourne, an English girl lost at sea a decade before. I'm one of those readers who wants her Historical Romances to sound, well, historical. Kresley Cole does an amazing job of writing an Historical Romance that sounds like modern times, and IT DOESN'T BOTHER ME. How on earth is this even possible? I'm not really sure, but by God this woman can write.
This one is set during Victorian England, it's the Sutherland brother Grant, who we saw setting off on a fool's errand of locating any survivors of a shipwreck from 8 years ago. Well, he found her. An...more

Good sequel to Cole's (The Captain of All Pleasures. Grant, younger brother to Derek, is more of a stubborn jerk , but still sexy and brooding. Tori is an a brave and intelligent woman, who wants her man, but can do fine without him. I wouldn't have minded if Cammy had ended up with Ian, but Stephen was an excellent substitute. I really feel that their must be another book in this series letting us know the fate of Ian and Erica. It was much too up in the air at the conclusion of this book.
Once...more

Grant's an arrow straight sea captain. Tori was shipwrecked as a girl, but she's a trooper who's also pretty smart. (treehouse!)

Not as strong as her later books, but still good, especially if you go for the ship captains. Takes a while to get into it but I really liked the end, which surprised me because if I had known where it was going, I don't think that would have been the case.

Oh yeah, that last sentence is completely coherent. Anyway, it's Kresley Cole, meaning it's better than most other...more

Much better than the first book in this series - I loved it!

I love how Tori outsmarts him in the beginning on the island, and even though it´s a bit hard to believe what happens, I love how she is a fighter til the end, very clear on what she feels for him.

Grant is adorable. I can just see him being his grumpy serious self, completely thown off balance by this woman and not wanting to admit what he feels.

The way the story develops is ok and although there are some little things that I gritted m...more

Grant Sutherland, brother to Derek Sutherland from The Captain Of All Pleasures is on a mission to locate members of the Dearbourne family. They were lost at sea many years ago, and the lone member of the family (the grandfather) is convinced that they are out there, alive, somewhere. With the promise of giving him the Dearbourne estate, the grandfather hires Grant for one last mission to locate the family.

Turns out, there were only two survivors from the shipwreck....one of them being granddau...more

I felt the need to read more KC after the release of Dreams of a Dark Warrior and although I prefer her PNRs, KC writes damn good historical as well.

Grant Sunderland is the logical brother. A leader by nature, he finds himself accepting a journey that leads him and his crew to the Oceanic in search for a missing girl named Victoria Dearbourne.

After eight years of being stranded on an island, Tori and her friend Cammy Scott have established a routine and find that living on a deserted island is...more

More like 3 and 1/2 stars. Yeah.

For the first time, I find myself distant from the characters.. at first I loved how this was going, but then through the middle I felt it drag till actually something happened and still nothing it was nothing special.. all till Tori took hold of the estate after her grandfather died.. I loved the sheet will of that girl!! Talk about girl power. So for that alone I'd give 4 stars.

So, that's the last book for Ms. Cole that I can read till the next one is published....more

No matter the genre, you can't go wrong with KC. This was a cute story of the Sutherland Brother "Grant" who was hireed by an aging man to find his daughters family who was shipwrecked 10 years past (he has been looking for 10 years). His payment is his land & house when he dies.

Captain Grant does find Tori on a deserted island & the story developes from there. She does not trust him & thinks he will do her harm like so many others that have found them, so she hides and retaliates et...more

I enjoyed every minute of this book. Full of emotional swings from the highest high to the most depressing of lows, this story will leave you feeling wrung out, but only in the very best of ways. Grant and Tori are perfectly matched and once they both deal with their insecurities and decid to enjoy the chance that fate has given them together, the love they share will fill your heart. It was also fun to see Grant’s brother Derek and his wife Nicola all settled down in marital bliss. I was thrill...more

I may have liked this one better than the first one. I found it long again, but was engrossed the whole time. I also loved the appearance of the couple from the first book.

The growth of the hero was superb. With that length one would hope it would be! I generally really liked the characters, and was disappointed that Cole never wrote Ian's story. I'd like to see what happened with him at some point.

Cole continues to please.

What a great book! The story grabs you from the first page and doesn't let go! I finished this book quickly and not necessarily because it was an easy read but because it was hard to put down. The story, the romance, the sensuality -- this book has all of what I look for in a historical romance. Can't wait for the next one in this series. I highly recommend this book!!

I've been devouring Kresley Cole’s Paranormal Romance Series for a while now so was very exited to get my hands on this book being a big fan of historical romance. The book started of well, shipwrecks, pursuit and trickery etc. but unfortunately somewhere along the way it just fizzled. I think either from a lack of story line or not enough spark between the characters. I have a theory that with romance novels you can literally have no story line at all but if the dialogue is witty, sassy and sex...more

I like the plot and how the story was molded but anyhow there was a part of the book that was exhausting... and it's the fact that Grant pushes Victoria away. At first, I didn't understand it but thanks to the proceeding page it mollified my annoyance... and I thought it was fine but not as good as The Captain of All Pleasure.

This one was just as enjoyable as the first. It's been a while since I've read a good stranded on a deserted island and then rescued story.

Grant struggled quite a bit with is feelings, and I definitely felt like tossing the book across the room a few times because he was so difficult.

But, I got the happy ending . . . and I'm wondering if we'll ever see Ian's story.

Kresley Cole is by far one of my favorite authors. While this story is a second one to a two book series, the story is quite unique. At first I had a bit of trouble getting into it, but once hooked I didn't want to put it down. It has some neat twist and turns and kept you guessing enough to turn the pages. Grant wasn't her strongest male lead, but that in itself was endearing. Tori was wonderfully written, and uninhibited. A definite change of pace from other stories were women were shocked at...more

I picked this book up over Christmas in a second-hand thrift store. I expected to love it since I love Cole's other series, but it just didn't keep my attention all that well. It was okay - nothing spectacular. Guess I'll stick with Cole's other series from now on. :)

Ostensibly second in the series, and this was evident at times.. A bit too much yes no yes no to my taste, and the notorious half-heard conversation ploy. It got better as we went along, and I quite liked the heroine. Now I have to get my hands on the first!
Ruth
Great sequel and a great standalone story with strong characters, great plot and well-developed secondary characters. The plot sounds far-fetched but is just exotic enough to be escapist rather than blatantly daft. Really enjoyed reading this one.

Oh No! Every Kresley Cole book has gotten 5 stars from me. I'm thinking a fair rating would be 3.5..and then I saw the high ratings! Eek what's wrong with me?
I just had a hard time with the main characters stubbornness. Annoying....
Kristel
Great book especially the water scene as Grant tells his beloved to "Trust him." it's a quick read and I really enjoyed it, going to continue reading the other two of this series. Love Kresley Cole!

Cole is always a great read...But some are better than others. A 75 page game of hide and seek in the jungle didn't exactly blow my skirt up but the book was still enjoyable.

I agree with other reviewers, the first half of the book is 5 stars ,the second three. I had a hard time finishing the book because I really started to dislike the heroine :(
