Nov 2008 REVIEW:
Still a four-star read the second time around! I loved Chief Russo more this time, in fact. The only thing I did not like and think it's the oddest addition to a book's ending is Sykes looking up Mrs Nolan. I see that I'd commented on that in my 2004 review below but this time, I'll say it felt even creepier. Even though Sykes rolled over and made a deal with the DA, he is still involved in the trafficking of young girls. He's the last thing Mrs Nolan needs in her sad, abused lif...more

This book is excellent nearly from start to finish! Howard writes with so many different tones and does so exceptionally well. The book starts out with hope, then gets creepy, frightening, horrific, light, fun, hilarious, serious and just wonderful! Some parts make you shudder at how horrible and disgusting things are and some are so funny you have tears in your eyes. For fans of Sandra Hill this is certainly a book to consider in terms of belly aching hilarity!

4.5 stars, on June 25:-)

Old-fashioned Southern Daisy meets big tough SWAT Yankee Jack Russo in small-town Alabama... what's not to like!

My favorite scene remains when Daisy buys the Party-Pak and discovers what flavors are inside:-p

Reread it on Nov 17th, and loved it just as much! Still as funny, and now it's a 5 star book!

Daisy needs some protection.

★★★★½ (This is a review of the audiobook.) Oh, I had to be bad and get this one! I know I only gave the hardcover of this one four stars, but it has some of my favorite themes along with one of my favorite authors, so I splurged and got the audiobook. I’m so glad I did, as Deborah Hazlett does a great job narrating. She handles this fast-paced Romantic Suspense with ease and perfect diction, while her pace, volume, and tone do not fluctuate. The male voices aren’t qui...more

I loved this story. It was light on the action/suspense plot but very well written. Original, funny dialog between the H/h, the sexiest hero, great heroine. Love this author.
HERO is a Warrior, chief of police, sexy, blunt, determined to get his prude librarian.
SCENES/CONTENT: several/hot
GENRE/TONE: contemporary/action, light

Loved it! One of my favorites by Linda Howard. Definitely a keeper to reread over and over again. Daisy Minor is 34 years old and its time for a change. The librarian is ready to break out of her shell and live. Enter the small town chief of police, Jack Russo. 'Nuff said.

Always on the lookout for new authors and good stories - heard about Linda Howard and I'm glad I gave her a try! Open Season was a humorous, fast-moving story filled with likeable characters - a 34-year-old librarian, Daisy, who has no life aside from her job and family and Jack, a police chief, who is pretty hot stuff. At first, I really didn't get them and didn't see how their relationship would work out. It started out more like he was her protector/guardian. But quickly enough, th...more

Narration by Deborah Hazlett 4.5*

I originally read this book over three years ago and thoroughly enjoyed it. I recently bought the unabridged audiobook from audible. The narration bu Deborah Hazlett is excellent. She does the Alabama accents well, and really gets Daisy's personality. Her voice sounds just like a smart but somewhat shelters southern woman should. Daisy is a great character, somehow blending prim-and-proper with backbone and humor. After deciding to c...more

I really liked this story.

Jack and Daisy are amazing together.

The writing, characters, and story are great.

All I can say is.... I'm glad Daisy won't have to buy a "Party Pack" ever again:))

I love LH and could give a full review of my issues regarding this book.

It's not her best. It's definitely not her worst. But it didn't have enough story or romance to keep me interested. I was forcing myself to read for the last 2 hours. I won't recommend a book that fizzed out, and actually became tedious with 2 hours left. No matter how I adore LH, this wasn't for me.

3.5/5.0

Linda Howard's books aren't anything earth shattering - just fun romantic/suspense. She writes dark but not too dark, enough to allow the reader to understand the depravity and gravity of a situation but not to the graphic, totally uncomfortable level. I appreciate that.

Open Season rates a four star because I love the hero and heroine. Daisy is a plain, ordinary, milk-toast spinster/librarian who is sick of it and decides to give herself a make-over. The one thing she can't make over,howe...more

I have very little good words to lace up this review with. The book blurb had a lot of promises, none of which were delivered to my satisfaction.

My opinion
Open Season starts on Daisy's 34th birthday, when she gets the sickening realization through one entire chapter that she is a Miss Goody-two-shoes with no life to boast of. No husband, no kids, no love life in years, still living with her mom and aunt (I know this is frowned upon so much, but I can never understand what's so wrong or embarrass...more

4 stars: very good romantic suspense

At first this book seemed a bit choppy to me and I was trying to figure out how the author was going to tie together human traffikers/sex slavers with an 'old maid' librarian. But as I got further into the story, things quickly started to tie together. The old maid librarian storyline was a cliche--and I didn't find it all that believeable. But I grew to like her character in spite of it, when she showed her intelligence and her spunky banter. Some of the inte...more

biasa aja...
serba nanggung, baik romance maupun suspense nya...
hubungan antara Daisy dan Jack kurang intense klo menurutku. chemistry nya kurang...
emang sih awal2nya kocak....
tp dipikir2 "pathetic" bgt ya si Daisy, umur 34, msh tinggal ama orang tua, blom punya pacar, gak bisa dandan and so on,,,dan baru nyadar pas ulang tahunnya yg ke 34,,,please deh,,kemana aja selama ini.
padahal diceritakan klo selama ini dia suka baca majalah trend..
endingnya malah gak peduli ama nasib Daisy dan Jack -_-...

Av Mevsimi, yazarın ilk okuduğum romanıydı. Ki oldukça da başarılı buldum. Yazar aynı anda her konuyu ele almış ve hepsini birbirine bağlamıştı.

Baştaki küçük kızlardan birinin kitabın sonunda ana karakter olacağını düşünmüştüm ama yazar beni yanılttı. Olayların küçük bir kasabayla nasıl bir bağlantısı olacak diye merakla çevirdim sayfaları. Tahmin etmeyeceğim şekilde gelişti olaylar. Kitabın içinde her şey vardı. Polisiye de denebilirdi kitaba aşk romanı d...more

Open Season is a very cute story of a 34 year old, inexperienced librarian named Daisy Minor from a small Alabama town who gives herself a little make over and sets out to be more social and in essence, is out to hunt for a husband. She meets the local police chief, Jack Russo who is so not her type and they actually get on each other's nerves a bit when he comes to the library for assistance on two occasions. But there's a subtle attraction there nonetheless.

Daisy gets into a little trouble he...more

It has been awhile since I have read something by Linda Howard but I am glad I took the time with OPEN SEASON. Hillsboro, Alabama could be another Mayberry, a small community with 9,000 plus citizens who, for the most part, like to know everyone's business. It starts with a prologue that introduces a darker element and is necessary to read. It will help you to understand what is occurring at the underbelly of this fine town.

You are also introduced to Daisy Minor- a plain, mousy, boring librarian...more

I listened to the Audible edition.
I will just say straight out, I loved this book.

It had humor, it had likeable characters and villainous villains.

Did I mention there was humor?

The narrator did a great job. Lots of women's voices were needed and each was distinguishable. Intonations were spot on. The men's voices were not grating or silly sounding. The emotion was properly done; there was no overacting or over-reacting.

The story is simple; the execution, superb. Some people don't like the "ugly...more

My Rating: 3.5

Open Season was a fun quick read with romance and suspense mixed together perfectly. I happily flowed throughout the book without once making a pit stop. The only bad thing is that the cover of the novel gives the overall book a different impression. "She's hunting for a man...and there's no more playing it safe" makes me think that the woman is the killer, not the actual killer. The shattered glass on the cover also made me think something along the lines of guns, not a knife.

This book so lived up to its hype, the heroine was a stereotypical librarian, with her nose in books, living with her aunt and mother when she got up on her 34th birthday and realized her life was passing her by, she was mousy, her hair, her clothes everything sucked and that if she didn't do anything she would never have the family she wanted, so she slowly starts working on it and her aunt and mom help. I loved how she was about money and her prissy tone especially with the Yankee police chief...more

Old-fashioned & drab 34yo librarian wants a makeover so she can attract a man to marry & have a family with. Her changed appearance attracts several men in the singles bar she goes to, including a serial rapist who drugs his would-be victims with GHB in their drinks. Fortunately, the new chief of police in their small town is often in the same places heroine is at & keeps rescuing her from mishaps around her. Hero makes his attraction to heroine known, which heroine is surprised to r...more

That's right. Another Linda Howard book. I seem to like them very much, don't I? Die-hard romance fans are just that way :)

Plotline: Daisy Minor is a woman who wakes up on her 34th birthday realizing she's well on her way to becoming an old maid. Suddenly alarmed at her bland hair, bland clothes, and bland lifestyle, Daisy vows to become a more attractive woman in order to catch herself a husband. Unfortunately, instead of a husband, she manages to catch herself a whole deal of trouble. Will she...more

I really liked the romance between Daisy and Jack. Daisys transformation was great and there were some scenes which had me gasping for air and shedding tears of laughter (the puppy scenes, but maybe these are only funny for people who have a dog as well). Anyhow I really enjoyed this book and I would like to give it 5 stars if there wouldn't be the gut wrenching crime story. Linda Howard has a real knack for these storylines and she writes these things so realistic (kidnapping and selling undera...more

Open Season starts with a young girl hoping for a better life. She trusts the wrong person and things don't go as planned. The opening is dark with a look at one of the ways illegal immigrants are abused and how those abuses have far reaching affects. The affects are not only felt at the border but by people who live beyond it. Even small town librarians.

Daisy Minor is such a fun, interesting heroine. She's one of those women that, if she were real, I would like to have as a friend. And she's a...more

After reading "Mr. Perfect", I was extremely excited to get my hands on "Open Season", although the premise sounded fairly cliche. Cliche it was - 'the typical good girl gets a make-over to bring the guys to the yard' theme - but it was enjoyable, which is really all I look for in a book.

The Daisy/Jack couple was rather more flat compared to Jaine/Sam from "Mr. Perfect", but they were reasonably charming all the same. However, I found the character of Daisy very difficult to understand; she was...more

I am not sure how I would categorize this book because at times it was like I was reading two different books at a time.

The book has two story lines running through it. There is the transformation and the romantic life of tame and dowdy town librarian, Daisy. The second story line is that of an underground slave trade. Then there is a third angle introduced toward the middle that loosely related to the slave trade.

Daisy's story is sweet, funny and at times a little hokey. The author took every...more

Read this few years back, and still one of my favorite book from Linda Howard.

Daisy Minor is a librarian with all that title entails - a 30 something almost spinsterish good girl with bookish look - she woke up one morning and decided that her life has to change. And the first thing to do to change her life is changing her look.

I love that Daisy's duck to swan changing is not over the top and unbelievable. She is not drop dead gorgeous, she just becomes attractive because she finally pays atte...more
