3D programming is hard. Despite Petzold's obvious know-how, and the usability improvements that come with WPF, I think it's still just over my head. Maybe this book was not intended to match my expectations, but I was hoping for a more pragmatic tutorial on taking advantage of 3D in "real world" applications.
