I bought this book after reading about the author's own health problems on Facebook. Ms Gillard was very frank and open about her experiences and, after reading the book, it is obvious that she has put her knowledge of the mental health service to good use.

Set in the Hebrides, the main character is trying to come to terms with the aftermath of a failed relationship, which has left her with a deep mistrust of men, and with a strained relationship with her daughter, the reason for which becomes c...more

Rose Leonard has just moved to North Uist, an island off the North of Scotland, in search of some peace in her life. She hopes the slow pace and emptiness of the island will allow her to concentrate on her art and will do her mental health good. Rose is bipolar, and she's still recovering from a chaotic ending to a stormy relationship.

In North Uist, she not only finds a community she quickly becomes part of, but a man who weakens her determination to stay away from relationships.

I enjoyed this o...more

Six Stars.
Completely believable in every way, shape and form.
Set in the bleakly beautiful Outer Hebrides, a love story between Rose and Calum slowly evolves from the ashes of their respective pasts. Rose is running from the reality of her life, frightened by the prospect of loving and living to the full in the fear of losing it all for a second time. Encumbered by mental health issues, it seems hopeless when she meets Calum; also emotionally fragile with his own demons. And yet, I found the pass...more

A beautiful book tackling the sensitive and complex topic of bipolar disorder. The main character, Rose is an artist using fabrics and sewing as her medium, stitching quilts to express her thoughts and feelings. Linda Gillard uses words and poems to weave her story in much the same way. She has good knowledge of art, poetry, climbing and the Hebrides and uses these very well to stitch and weave her plot and characters into the readers mind. Some elements of the story were a little predictable, s...more

This book had so much promise for me - a beautiful Hebridean setting, a love story so drenched in the creativity of the two lovers, the fact that they are two grown-ups. This is is a novel with warmth, empathy and heart. I am loving what I've started to call for myself 'ScotLit' (sorry) - wonderful novels in which the power of the Scottish landscape is almost as much a protagonist as the characters, and which are mature and full of insight.

However, my reservation about this one is that it seeme...more

Rose is a troubled mentally unstable woman who seeks refuge from her past in a remote island spot. Gradually she loses herself in the peace of her location and the creative allure of her textiles, pebbles, fabrics and colours.
Calum is a younger man, a teacher, who lives in a caravan a short distance away from Rose's cottage. He befriends her and offers her new horizons. But when her challenging daughter Megan turns up, Rose's new sense of hope and security is threatened, and once again she face...more

My first thought when I finished reading Emotional Geology was masterpiece. Beautifully written and deeply moving, it’s the story of a woman with bipolar disorder who is trying to start afresh after a traumatic relationship break-up and the resultant mental breakdown.

Rose, a textile artist buys a cottage on Uist, a remote Scottish island, and meets Callum, a poet, teacher and the younger brother of her neighbour Shona. Rose wonders why this handsome, charming forty year old is alone. Though ther...more

Months ago I read a wonderful book called Star Gazing. Its author, Linda Gillard, lives on an island off Scotland and I soon became FB friends with her. Recently I learned she had a few copies left of her earlier book, Emotional Geology, so I bought one.

I don't know how many U.S. readers are familiar with Gillard's work, but I would encourage anyone who likes a deep love story (as opposed to what we all call romance) to find either of these books and read them.

Warning though, Emotional Geology...more

In an attempt to leave her home, her family, her friends and all she’s ever known behind, Rose Leonard wakes up to the sounds of the sea and wind on the small, desolate Scottish isle of North Uist. Perhaps getting this far away is the only way she can stay sane, stay healthy, and focus on her need to create with minimal medication. She isn’t lonely yet; in fact she has already befriended the watchful and caring neighboring family. Shona McAskill, her congenial drinking husband Donald and her bro...more

Just two weeks ago I reviewed Linda Gillard's most recent novel Star Gazing. Though I had somewhat mixed feelings on the ending, I loved the writing and the characters so very much that I was absolutely set on tracking down a copy of Gillard's first book EMOTIONAL GEOLOGY. Unfortunately, it's not readily available on this side of the pond and, the Ville funds being what they are, I wasn't sure just how soon I'd be able to procure a copy. Then what should happen but the very kind Ms. Gillard cont...more

Rose is a textile artist with bipolar disorder who for years found her medication dulled her ability to work. After a stunning betrayal that landed her in a mental hospital, she has moved to a quiet, extraordinarily rural island in Scotland in an attempt to control her illness with as little medication as possible so she may still create her art. Her life isn’t quite as quiet as she imagined it would be, though, with a warm neighbor, Shona, who introduces her to her brother, a teacher and poet.

Rose, has moved to a Scottish Island that has no mountains. Gavin climbed mountains.
Rose tries to convince those around her that she is over Gavin, but moving on with her life is proving a challenge.

A Bi-polar sufferer, Rose believes that the remoteness of her new home and her textile therapy and work is helping her to heal emotional scars of her past.

Enter, Calum, another one of the author's gorgeous leading men. Calum is the distraction Rose had not counted on. Calum is strong, handsome and...more

Emotional Geology by Linda Gillard is kuforum’s March 2012 choice for bookclub read of the month. This is another book with a lot of hype that I wondered if it was my type of read.

Well the answer to that is “not quite”. I found I was struggling to get into it. Once I was in, it was a pleasant enough read about a new life on Uist. The present day story doesn’t really go anywhere, the story was more in the flashbacks of the characters getting to where they are now. In fact you could precise the bo...more

Emotional Geology by Linda Gillard is a sensitive and emotional read. It is about a forty seven years old lady, Rose and her tumultous emotional journey and how she tries to recover from her past failed relationship with Gavin, an avid mountaineer and move on in life. Rose is a complex character and the author has very intricately described her, right from her love for her boyfriend-Gavin, the textile work she loves to do that works like a therapy to her, to her bipolar disorder sufferings, abou...more

Thought provoking, intense and emotionally brilliant writing. A must read for those who have lived first hand with mental health issues as well as those who have not. This story is not in the slightest bit depressing even if the general name for mental health issues is depression. The characters and location drew me in and refused to let me go until their story of love over adversity was told.

Rose devastated by a love lost, believes going it alone is the answer to her health issues and moves to...more

This is a book I've been aware of for a long time before finally getting around to reading it. I had a false start - it's not a book that's easy to read on-and-off, but demands concentration - but when I did read it properly I then found it hard to put down until the end.
At times I felt the same frustration that I felt when reading Margaret Atwood's book Cat's Eye - that a substantial part of the book is about the author's art, which has to be imagined rather than seen - but nevertheless the cha...more

This seemed to me to be a very unusual book. Very little actually happens at the time the book is set. Instead of current action we are progressively fed background information that explains how the characters come to be in the situation where we find them.
It is beautifully written and flawlessly presented. I found it totally engrossing and satisfying. The author has been quite open about her own mental health problems and has been active in helping others in this area. If this book isn't actual...more

Rose Leonard moves to the remote Gaelic speaking island of North Uist, off the west coast of Scotland. She wants to embrace the silence and solitude of the island and be alone, she wants to escape from her past and have a fresh start. Rose is an intelligent and very creative woman. She occupies her time by making textile art from leftover scraps of material. This is what Rose does to relax and she tries to use this to help heal her self from the past. However, her memories and the past she is tr...more

This is the third book by Linda Gillard and it is my favourite. 'Emotional Geology' was a powerful story which I related to in so many ways, Rose was a memorable and excellent character and very complex, I liked how Linda Gillard did not label her, yes Rose suffers from bi-polar but it is not the main aspect of Rose, everything about Rose was explained in a clear and caring manner, with understanding. Calum was also a excellent character, like Rose he had his own issues, I thought it was realist...more

This was a tough read. The subject matter that is. Rose is attempting to start fresh after an attempted suicide; a subject that I personally tend to stay away from. It's not a very enticing subject, and not very entertaining for obvious reasons. But sometimes it's not what is being said, but how one says it that matters. I could not have stomached this story if Gillard's writing had been any less beautiful.

It's fitting that it's a story about an artist, as it paints very vivid pictures. I envis...more

I was expecting great things from this book, because of all the good reports I have been reading about Transita authors recently! Well it certainly met my expectations. Well written, easy to read and in the authors own words 'intelligent romance for mature women.'
It is a love story but a haunting one. Set in a beautiful location which the author brings to life on the printed page. Poetic, artistic and informative. Linda Gillard writes knowledgably on the s...more

Confusing at first, as this book switches frequently between first and third person narration. But the characters are well drawn, and I soon got caught up in the story. It features Rose, a textile artist who has moved to the island of Uist in the Scottish Highlands, as she recovers from the traumatic breakdown of a relationship a few years previously.

Poetry and art complement each other, and there are some moving, even shocking sections of the book as Rose and her neighbour's brother unravel the...more

A fearless examination of the emotions of a damaged woman as she tries to re-enter life on a remote Scottish island. Rose is so injured by her ex and fights manic-depression as well, that I occasionally wanted to shake her. Calum was completely awesome. The exhibition of textile and poetry idea is brilliant; I loved Basalt and Basalt 2. The story flips between present day and poems (but never Calum's) and remembrances of the past, exposing the layers of Rose's mind. That said, this book is one I...more

I read this tale by Linda Gillard thanks to some impressive bibliovangelizing by Angie at Angieville. I downloaded it onto my Kindle ($.99!) and started reading away.

Rose had a passionate love affair with Gavin that ended badly five years ago. Very badly. And it caused a serious rift with her now-grown daughter, Megan, too. Now she is trying to put her life back together on a remote island of Scotland. She's determined to live a quiet, solitary, and sane life, until she meets the handsome poet n...more

I finished this book quite some time ago but I haven't felt...qualified? to write a review on it. This book was just utterly amazing. I don't know how else to describe it!

Emotional Geology is the most perfect title to describe this book. It was quite the emotional journey for me and I loved every minute of it. I felt myself drawn to Rose and her emotional turmoil. While I can't say that I have dealt with her same situation, I did find myself relating to some of my past relationships. Calum was...more

Oh wow, I don't think I can write a review that would do this book justice. I can't even classify what genre it falls under. Emotional Geology is about so many unfamiliar things - it's about forty-seven-year-old Rose and her everyday problems as she tries to cope with bipolar disorder and a past that's been troubling her for years. Rose settles in a remote area in Scotland, hoping to immerse herself in her work as a textile artist. She finds a kindred spirit in Calum, a ha...more

This was a story about Rose. Rose is in her mid-forties and has a daughter who is in her early 20’s. Rose moves to an island off the coast of Scotland for peace of mind, literally. For Rose’s mind is not usually at peace. Suffering from Bipolar disorder, Rose is convinced an isolated life away from friends and family is the perfect remedy to help her forget her past. She throws herself into her work and begins healing. And then she meets Calem. Calem is a local school teacher. He is very handsom...more

The language is a bit edgy at a few points for my tastes, but considering that is now how the world talks, what more can I say? I still cringe at hearing or reading profanity, but think Gillard is a vey good writer. A well-executed book about an artist who lives with bipolar disorder. Having had several friends who have suffered so intensely with this disorder, I found the book fascinating reading. The setting in Northern Scotland is richly drawn and the characters are both memorable and believa...more

Lovely setting, a lovely story. What I wrote after I read this book several years ago: I liked this novel about a woman who has moved to a tiny Scottish island to get away from it all. The man she loved has betrayed her, and she walked through a glass door. After her injuries healed, she needed a place where she could pursue her art with no distractions. Her bipolar disease has been treated with meds that affect her work. Will she find some contentment in remote Uist?

“It's been a long time, you see. There's been no one for five years. Not since Gavin. I've spent five years murdering what I felt for him, starving my need for him, purging my memory. But somehow it still feels...too soon. They say time heals, but--'
'They lied,' he said simply.”
